Scattering of Scaar Waves by Schwarzschid Back Hoe Immersed in Magnetic Fied Juhua Chen, Hao Liao, and Yongjiu Wang Coege of Physics and Information Science, Key Laboratory of Low Dimensiona Quantum Structures and Quantum Contro of Ministry of Education, Hunan Norma University, Changsha, Hunan arxiv:.5v [gr-qc] 3 Nov The magnetic fied is one of the most important constituents of the cosmic space and one of the main sources of the dynamics of interacting matter in the universe. The astronomica observations impy the existence of a strong magnetic fieds of up to G near supermassive back hoes in the active gaactic nucei and even around stear mass back hoes. In this paper, with the quantum scattering theory, we anaysis the Schröedinger-type scaar wave equation of back hoe immersed in magnetic fied and numericay investigate its orption cross section and scattering cross section. We find that the orption cross sections osciate about the geometric optica vaue in the high frequency regime. Furthermore in ow frequency regime, the magnetic fied makes the orption cross section weaker and this effect is more obviousy on ower frequency brand. On the other hand, for the effects of scattering cross sections for the back hoe immersed in magnetic fied, we find that the magnetic fied makes the scattering fux weaker and its width narrower in the forward direction. We find that there aso exists the gory phenomenon aong the backforward direction. At fixed frequency, the gory peak is higher and the gory width becomes narrower due to the back hoe immersed in magnetic fied. Keywords: orption cross section, scattering cross section, magnetic fied. PACS numbers:.7.-s,..-b,..+v I. INTRODUCTION It is we known that genera reativity and quantum mechanics are incompatibe in their current form. However, after Hawking found that back hoes can emit, as we as scatter, orb, and that the evaporation rate is proportiona to the tota orption cross section. A ot of schoars are interest in the orption of quantum fieds by back hoe since 97s. By using numerica methods, Sanchez [, ] found that the orption cross section of massess scaar wave exhibits osciation around the geometry-optica imit characteristic of diffraction patterns by Schwarzschid back hoe. Unruh [3] showed that the scattering cross section for the fermion is exacty / of that for the scaar wave in the ow-energy imit. By numericay soving the singe-partice Dirac equation in Painevé-Gustrand coordinates, Chris Doran et a [] studied the orption of massive spin-haf partice by a sma Schwarzschid back hoe and they found osciations around the cassica imit whose precise form depends on the partice mass. Crispino et a [5] have computed numericay the orption cross section of eectromagnetic waves for arbitrary frequencies and have found that its high-frequency behavior is very simiar to that for massess scaar fied by Schwarzschid back hoe. In ast severa years, Oiveria et a [] extended to study the orption of panar in a draining bathtub, the orption cross section of sound waves with arbitrary frequencies in the canonica acoustic hoe spacetime [7] and eectromagnetic orption cross section from Reissner-Nordström back hoes []. Recenty, orption cross section (or Eectronic address: jhchen@hunnu.edu.cn gray body factors) has been of interest in the context of higher-dimensiona using standard fied theory in curved spacetimes [9 ] and effective string mode []. The magnetic fied is one of the most important constituents of the cosmic space and one of the main sources of the dynamics of interacting matter in the universe. In addition some other theories [3 5] impy the existence of a strong magnetic fieds of up to G near supermassive back hoes in the active gaactic nucei and even around stear mass back hoes. In order to make estimations of possibe infuence of the magnetic fied on the supermassive back hoes, we need the two parameters at hand: the magnetic fied parameter B and the mass of the back hoe M. Interaction of a back hoe and a magnetic fied can happen in a ot of physica situations: when an accretion disk or other matter distribution around back hoe is charged; when taking into consideration gaactic and intergaactic magnetic fieds, and, possiby, if mini-back hoes are created in partice coisions in the brane-word scenarios. So astrophysics have highy interest to investigate the magnetic fieds around back hoes []. A magnetic fied is important as a background fied testing back hoe geometry. A magnetic fied near a back hoe eads to a number of processes, such as extraction of rotationa energy from a back hoe, known as the Bandford-Znajek effect [7], negative orption (masers) of eectrons []. At the cassica eve, the magnetic perturbation can aso be described by its damped characteristic modes, which caed the quasinorma modes (QNMs) [9 ] which coud be observed in experiments, and by the scattering properties, which are encoded in the S-matrix of the perturbation. A of these effects are usuay caed the fingerprints of a back hoe. In recent few years, we a know that quasinorma modes of back hoes has gained considerabe attention
because of their appications in string theory through the AdS/CFT correspondence. In this paper we mainy focus on the scaar scattering process of back hoe immersed in magnetic fied and how the interaction of back hoe and strong magnetic fied effects on scaar orption and scattering cross sections. Theoutineofthispaperisasfoows: InSec.II, wesetup scaar fied equation back hoes immersed in a magnetic fied and anaysis effective potentia. In the Sec. III and IV, we concentrate on the orption and scattering cross section of the scaar wave by back hoes immersed in a magnetic fied. In the ast section, a brief concusion is given. II. SCALAR FIELD EQUATION AND EFFECTIVE POTENTIAL The Diaz and Ernst soution [3] describing the back hoes immersed in a magnetic fied takes the foow form: ds = Λ [( M r )dt +( M r ) dr r dθ ] r sin θ Λ dφ, () where the externa magnetic fied is determined by the parameter B Λ = + B r sin θ, () and the unit magnetic fied measured in Gs is B M = /M =. 9MSun M. The genera perturbation equation for the massess scaar fied Ψ in the curve spacetime is given by g µ ( gg µν ν )Ψ =. (3) For very strong magnetic fieds in centres of gaaxies or in coiders, corresponds to M M in our units, so that one can safey negect terms higher than B in Eq.(3). Indeed, in the expansion of Λ in powers of B, the next term after that proportiona to B r, is B r and, thereby, is very sma in the region near the back hoe. The term B r is growing far from back hoe, and, moreover the potentia in the asymptoticay far region is diverging, what creates a kind of confining by the magnetic fied of the Ernst soution. This happens because the non-decaying magnetic fied is assumed to exist everywhere in the universe. Therefore it is cear that in order to estimate a rea astrophysica situation, one needs to match the Ernst soution with a Schwarzschid soution at some arge r. Fortunatey we do not need to do this for the scattering probem: the scattering properties of astrophysica interest is stipuated by the behavior of the effective potentia in some region near back hoe, whie its behavior far from back hoe is insignificant []. In this way we take into consideration ony dominant correction due-to magnetic fied to the effective potentia of the Schwarzschid back hoe. By negecting terms B and higher order terms and separating the anguar variabes, we reduce the wave equation(3) to the Schröedinger wave equation The Kein-Gordon equation can be written in the spacetime () as M r Ψ t r r [( M r )r Ψ r ]+ r Ψ =.() The positive-frequency soutions of Eq.() take as foows Ψ ωm = [ψ ω (r)/r]y m e iωt, (5) where Y m are scaar spherica harmonic functions and and m are the corresponding anguar momentum quantum numbers. In this case, the functions ψ m (r) satisfy the foow differentia equation ( M r ) d dr [( M r )dψ ω dr ]+[ω V () eff (r)]ψ ω =,() where V () eff (r) = ( M r )[(+) r + M r 3 +B m ]. (7) The effective potentia V () eff (r) is potted in Fig. for =,,. From this figure, we can see that the effective potentiav () eff (r) dependsonyonthevauesofr, anguar quantum number, ADM mass M, magnetic fied B, respectivey, and that the peak vaue of potentia barrier gets upper and the ocation of the peak point (r = r p ) moves aong the right when the anguar momentum increases. We can find that the the height of the effective scattering potentia increases as the anguar momentum increases. If we introduce the tortoise coordinate x = ( M r ) dr, () Theeffective potentiasv () eff (r) arechangedintov() eff (x), which are showed in Fig. for =,,, it s obvious that they act as the typica scattering barriers in quantum mechanics theory. We see that the peak vaue of potentia barrier gets upper and the ocation of the peak point (x = x p ) moves aong the right when the anguar momentum increases. We aso find that the height of the effective scattering barrier increases as the magnetic fied B increases, at the same time we can see that the height of the effective scattering barrier, affecting by the magnetic fied, becomes higher than that of Schwarzschid back hoe. After introducing this coordinate transition, we can obtain the foowing Schrödinger-type equation d ψ ω dx +[ω V () eff (x)]ψ ω =. (9)
3 V eff M = = where h () (ωx) are spherica Besse functions of the third kind [5], at the same time A in and A out are compex constants. We note that h () (ωx) ( i) + e ix /x as x and that the effective potentia goes to zero as x, so we obtain { ψ ω A tr A in ω e iωx +A out ω e iωx, for x ; ω e+iωx, for x +. ().5 = with the conserved reation. FIG. : (coor onine). The effective scattering potentia V eff (r) given by Eq.7 for scaar waves by the back hoe immersed in magnetic fied with =,, for B = (red soid ine, i.e. Schwarzschid case) and B =. The effective scattering potentia V eff (x) given by Eq.7 for scaar waves by the back hoe immersed in magnetic fied in tortoise coordinate with =,, for B = (red soid ine, i.e. Schwarzschid case) and B =. (buedashed ine), andb =. (backdotted ine). From this figure, we can see the effective scattering potentia V eff (x) act as the typica scattering barrier in quantum mechanics theory. The perturbation must be purey ingoing at the back hoe event horizon r = r +. So whie r r + i.e. x, we impose the boundary condition r M x M ψ ω = A tr ω e iωx, for x. () It is straightforward to check that in the origina coordinate system () the ingoing soution e iωx is we defined at r = r +, whereas the out going soution e +iωx is divergent. Towards spatia infinity, the asymptotic form of the soution is ψ ω = ωx[a in ω( i) + h () (ωx)+a out ω (i) + h () (ωx)] for x +, () A tr ω + A out ω = A in ω (3) The phase shift δ is defined by e iδ = ( ) + A out /A in. () In order investigate the orption cross section and scattering cross section, we must numericay sove the radia equation (9) under the boundary conditions Eq.() and Eq.(), then compute the ingoing and outgoing coefficients A in ω and Aout ω by matching onto Eq.() to give out the numerica phase shift. III. ABSORPTION CROSS SECTION Base on the quantum mechanics theory, we know that the tota orption cross section is σ = π ω (+)( e iδ ), (5) = so we can define the partia orption cross section as σ () = π ω (+)( eiδ ), () and the orption cross section have reation σ (ω) = = σ () (ω) = π ω (+) T ω. (7) By using mathematica program, we straightforwardy compute vaues of ingoing and outgoing coefficients A in ω and A out ω. Then from Eq.(), Eq.(5)and Eq.(), we can simuate the partia orption cross sections and their tota orption cross sections of the scaar fied from the back hoe immersed in magnetic fied. In Fig.3 we show the partia orption cross sections σ (), i.e. =,,, by the back hoe immersed in magnetic fied for different magnetic parameters B =. and Λ =,. and.. We find that the S-wave ( = ) contribution is responsibe for the nonvanishing cross section in the zero-energy imit. Furthermore, by comparing different partia orption cross section curves, we find that the arger the vaue of is, the smaer the corresponding vaue of σ () is. This is compatibe with the fact that the scattering barrier V eff is bigger =
or arger vaues of, which is showed in Fig. and Fig.. These properties are simiar to other back hoe scattering system[, 7, ]. On the other hand with phase-integra method, Andersson [7] had gotten very simiar resuts (see Fig.7 therein). Inordertoconsidereffects ofmagneticfiedonthe partia orption cross section. In Fig. we pot the partia orption cross section for =,, with B = ( i.e. Schwarzschid back hoe case), B =. and B =.. We see that the magnetic fied make the orption weaker, even for ow frequency mode. This is agree with the fact that the magnetic fied is stronger, the higher vaue of the effective scattering barrier peak is forafixedvaueof, whichcanbeseeninfig.andfig.. But for high enough vaues of the frequency, the magnetic fied does not effect the partia orption cross section obviousy. From Eq.(7), we know the orption cross section have reation with the transmission coefficients []. This feature can be tested the transmission coefficients in Fig.5, where we find that high enough vaues of the frequency a transmission coefficients with fixed tend to the unity. These properties hep us understand the orption process better. In Fig. we pot tota orption cross sections σ which contribute from = to = 5 by the back hoe immersed in magnetic fied with fixed parameters B = ( i.e. Schwarzschid case), B =. and B =.. We can see that I) between the intermediate regime ωm (., ), the contributions from the partia orption sections create a reguar osciatory pattern. Each maximum in the osciation of the tota orption cross section is inked to the maximum of a particuar partia wave. II) If the waveength of the incoming wave is much smaer than the back hoe horizon (i.e. ωm >> ), the orption cross section tends to the geometry-optica imit of σ hf = πb c. This is verified by the tota orption cross section for the massess scaar fied which was computed by Sanchez [] in ast century. At the same time, these properties are aso found for eectromagnetic wave orption cross section [5] and for Fermion orption cross section in the Schwarzschid back hoe []. In bottom-eft position of Fig., we pot tota orption cross sections for different vaues of magnetic parameters. We aso consider the contributions of the anguar momentum from = to = 5 in Eq.(). We can see that big vaues of the magnetic parameter B correspond to ow tota orption cross section which is consistent with the fact of the partia section in Fig.. and the scattering barrier which is showed in Fig. and. But we can find that the orption cross sections osciate about the geometric optica vaue in the high frequency regime. However in ow frequency regime, the magnetic fied makes the orption cross section weaker, i.e. the magnetic makes obvious effect on ower frequency brand, not on high frequency brand. We note that this is a genera resut for massess scaar waves in Reissner- Nordström back hoe [] and for the minimay-couped massess scaar wave in stationary back hoe spacetimes Σ = = = FIG. 3: (coor onine). The behavior of the partia scattering cross sections σ () sca, from = to =, at Mω = for the scaar wave is scattered by the back hoe immersed in magnetic fied with B =.. [9]. There are simiar properties for tota orption section from the charged back hoe couping to Born-Infed eectrodynamics [3] and dark energy [3]. IV. SCATTERING CROSS SECTION From the quantum mechanics theory, it s we known that the scattering ampitude is expressed as f(θ) = iω (+)[e iδ ]P (cosθ). () =
From this scattering ampitude, we can give the differentia scattering cross section immediatey dσ dω = f(θ). (9) At ast we can define the scattering and orption cross sections [3, 33] σ sca = dσ dω dω = π ω (+) e iδ, () = Log M dσ sca d 3 so the partia scattering cross section is σ () sca = π ω (+) eiδ. () In order to simuate the scattering cross sections ()- (), we must numericay sove differentia equation (9) under boundary conditions () and (), to obtain numerica vaues for the phase shifts via Eq.(). Figures 7 show the partia scattering cross section a function of angefor six different partia wavesfrom = to =. By comparing these figures, we can see that, when the L increases, the fux is preferentiay scattered in the forward direction, i.e. the scattering ange width become narrower. At the time a more compicated pattern arises and we find a damping osciation pattern. The simiar properties are observed for back hoe scattering [33 35]. The expanation for the physica origin of the osciations can be found in Ref.[3]. Figures, 9 and compare the scattering cross sections for the Scharzschid back hoe with the back hoe immersed in magnetic fied with B =. and.3. We find that the magnetic fied makes the scattering fux weaker and its width narrower in the forward direction. CONCLUSIONS In this paper we have investigated the scattering and orption cross section of the scaar wave by the back hoe immersed in magnetic fied. We found that the magnetic parameter B makes the orption cross section ower which is consistent with the fact of the scattering barrier which is showed in Fig. and. 7 7 the orption cross section weaker and this effect is more obviousy on ower frequency brand. For the effects of the scattering cross sections for the back hoe immersed in magnetic fied, we found that the magnetic fied makes the scattering fux weaker and its scattering width narrower in the forward direction. At the same time we found that there aso exists the gory phenomenon aong the backforward direction. At fixed frequency, the gory peak is higher and the gory width becomes narrower due to the back hoe immersed in magnetic fied. So the gory phenomenon aong the backforward direction becomes better for astronomy observation. Just as the Brazi physicist Crispino et a [] have pointed out: In principe, highy accurate measurements of, for exampe, the gravitationa wave fux scattered by a back hoe coud one day be used to estimate the back hoes charge. A more immediate possibiity is that scattering and orption patterns may be observed with back hoe anaog systems created in the aboratory. Even if experimenta verification is not forthcoming, we hope that studies of wave scattering by back hoes wi continue to improve our understanding of how back hoes interact with their environments.
