1 AN ALGEBRAIC INTERPRETATION OF THE WHEELER-DEWITT EQUATION arxiv:gr-qc/960900v Sep 996 John W. Barrett Louis Crane 6 March 008 Abstract. We make a direct connection between the construction of three dimensiona topoogica state sums from tensor categories and three dimensiona quantum gravity by noting that the discrete version of the Wheeer-DeWitt equation is exacty the pentagon for the associator of the tensor category, the Biedenharn-Eiott identity. A crucia roe is payed by an asymptotic formua reating 6j-symbos to rotation matrices given by Edmonds. Introduction It has been known since the work of Ponzano and Regge [] that the quantum theory of gravity in three Eucidean dimensions can be described by means of the evauation of spin networks, which are combinations of representations of the Lie group SU( under the tensor product in the category of representations of SU(. The ideas were eaborated by Hassacher and Perry []. The evauation of a spin network on a sphere can be cacuated by trianguating the three-dimensiona ba bounded by the diagram and abeing a interior edges with representations. Ponzano and Regge gave a formua as a sum over a such abeings of the product of the 6J symbos associated to the tetrahedra of the trianguation. The edge abes j are identified with haf-integers. Ψ(boundary edge abes = interior edge abes ( χ ( tetrahedra 6j-symbo interior edges (j + ( where the integer χ is a function of the edge abes. If the sum is finite, then it is independent of the trianguation in the interior of the ba. A more detaied account of this has appeared in []. The formua can aso be appied to obtain a wavefunction for other -manifods more genera than the ba. Subsequent deveopments have put this formua into a broader context. Turaev and Viro [4] showed that the anaogous formua, using the truncated category of representations of a quantum group at a root of unity gives rise to a three dimensiona topoogica quantum fied theory (TQFT, cosey reated to the Chern Simons theory of Witten [5].
2 JOHN W. BARRETT LOUIS CRANE Barrett and Westbury [6,7], have demonstrated that the natura generaisation of this construction is a tensor category with unit and duas and ony a very weak and natura assumption on the eft and right traces. In particuar the braiding or symmetry of the tensor product is unnecessary. The usefu generaization of 6J symbos is the associator isomorphism of the tensor category. Thus, we have what seems to be a rather mysterious connection between a very abstract branch of mathematics, namey the theory of tensor categories, and the very deep physica probem of quantising genera reativity. The purpose of this paper is to make this connection more direct, and possiby somewhat cearer. What we show is that the Wheeer-DeWitt equation for d genera reativity reduces directy to the pentagon reation for the tensor category we are using, in the presence of an asymptotic formua for thin tetrahedra. Since the pentagon [8] is just the coherence condition for the associator of the tensor product of the category, we are identifying the aws of motion of genera reativity directy with the most fundamenta part of the theory of tensor categories. This aows us to focus our efforts to make physica interpretations of theories based on other tensor categories on the discovery of the thin tetrahedra asymptotic forms of the associator isomorphisms. This paper shoud be thought of as shedding some ight on the agebraic program for quantising genera reativity outined in [9]. The great desideratum, of course, woud be to find an anaog of the categorica formua which worked in four dimensions. We have not yet worked out the four dimensiona argument anaogous to the one given in this paper but we beieve it shoud be possibe to do so, and that it might hep to recognize whether an agebraic construction of a four dimensiona state sum is reated to genera reativity. The Ponzano-Regge wavefunction is defined for trianguations of a -manifod with boundary where the state-sum ( is a finite sum. The wavefunction is then the Turaev-Viro partition function with the parameter q set to, up to a normaisation. This shows that when the Ponzano-Regge wavefunction is defined it depends ony on the boundary data and the topoogy of the -manifod, being independent of the particuar trianguation. However the Ponzano-Regge formua does not define a TQFT because for an arbitrary trianguation the formua ( may be infinite. In any TQFT defined by a state sum in a simiar manner to the Turaev-Viro state sum, there is a vector space V determined by a trianguation of a surface. The partition functions, or wavefunctions, a ie in a particuar subspace S V. Whie the space V depends on the trianguation, the subspace S is independent of the trianguation. One can see on genera grounds that S is determined by a set of projectors π v, one associated to each vertex v in the surface, and that S is determined by the equations π v ψ = ψ ( being simutaneousy satisfied. The equations are obviousy candidates for the anaogues in this theory of the Hamitonian constraint equations which are often supposed to characterise diffeomorphism invariant quantum fied theories. In this paper, we present constraint equations in the form of ( for the Ponzano- Regge wavefunction. However the argument is independent of the genera formaism of TQFT. We give an argument that the equations are a quantisation of the ap-
3 AN ALGEBRAIC INTERPRETATION OF THE WHEELER-DEWITT EQUATION Ponzano-Regge wavefunction as beonging to a quantisation of a specific action, namey Einstein gravity. The constraint equations The Einstein equation for a metric in three dimensions is that it is ocay fat. On the boundary surface Σ of the manifod, this impies that there are constraints between the extrinsic curvature K ab and the metric g ab of Σ. Assuming that the three-dimensiona metric is positive definite, these are and a K a b b K = 0 K K ab K ab R = 0, ( where K = K ab g ab, is the connection for g, and R its scaar curvature. The conventions are those of [0]. The Einstein action can be used to cast these equations in the framework of Hamitonian mechanics [], using the momentum density π ab = ( Kg ab K ab Ω (4 where Ω is the metric voume measure. Then the constraints are ( π π ab π ab Ω RΩ = 0 (5 and a π a b = 0. (6 For each tangent h ab to the space of metrics on Σ, canonica quantisation associates to the momentum φ = π ab h ab (7 Σ the first order differentia operator corresponding to h ab. Making this substitution in the Hamitonians determined by (5 and (6 does not generay make sense in this infinite-dimensiona configuration space. However this system can be quantised by changing variabes and fixing the gauge in a particuar way []. Aternativey, one can make progress by repacing the space of metrics on Σ by a finite-dimensiona approximating space. Then canonica quantisation gives partia differentia equations, with some ambiguity due to the different possibe orderings of the operators. Our quantisation procedure is to use the finite-dimensiona space of metrics determined by Regge cacuus [] and regard quantisation as giving an approximation to the equations satisfied by the wavefunction, which is aready defined. Thus we are not using quantisation to define a quantum theory, rather to compare a quantum theory with a cassica mechanica one. The momentum φ survives the discretisation procedure, and for a metric fucta-

This identity is specific to three dimensions, the momentum and the extrinsic curvature being ogicay distinct quantities. If Σ is the boundary of a -manifod M with a Eucidean signature metric, this is the ange of rotation of the outward unit norma from the triange at one side of an edge to the norma to the triange at the other side. It is positive if the edge is convex and negative if the edge is concave. Consider a vertex in Σ which beongs to exacty three trianges, such as appears on the boundary of a tetrahedron (figure. The connection in M gives a map TM p TM p if a path from p to p in Σ is given which avoids vertices. If an orthonorma frame is chosen at p and p, then this map determines a rotation in SO( frame at p R rotation R frame at p TM p TM p Consider a path which circuates the vertex via six points at which canonica frames are chosen, as shown in figure. At each point, vector z is chosen to ie aong the adjacent edge tangent to Σ and x is chosen rotated by a oca orientation of the surface. The frame is competed by vector y which is the outward norma to Σ. The six rotation matrices are R, R, R, which are rotations through θ, θ, θ about the y-axis, and K, K, K, which are rotations by φ, φ, φ about the z-axis. The R s can be described as the rotations which take one edge into the next and the K s are the rotations which make one face parae to the next. The condition that M is fat is that the hoonomy in M is the identity h = R K R K R K = I SO(. (8 This gives three equations per vertex of Σ which constrain the metric of Σ and its extrinsic curvature. These are the key equations which we wish to quantise, to give our discrete version of the Wheeer-DeWitt equation. The equations (8 are the discrete anaogues of the Hamitonian constraint equations. This can be seen by considering sma perturbations of the geometry around a
5 AN ALGEBRAIC INTERPRETATION OF THE WHEELER-DEWITT EQUATION 5 R R K K K R y x z z y x Figure. Path in Σ and choice of frames three standard basis eements X, Y, Z of the Lie agebra of SO(, which generate rotations about the x, y and z axes. At the fat configuration, the two-dimensiona hoonomy is the identity, R R R = I SO(, and a sma perturbation resuts in a sma deficit ange δ. Each edge has associated a Lie agebra eement L = ( cos θ Z + ( sin θ X L = Z L = ( cos θ Z ( sin θ X Expanding (8 for sma φ, φ, φ, and keeping ony the owest-order non-zero terms, one gets φ L + φ L + φ L = 0 and δ = φ φ sin θ. The first of these is two equations, inear in the momenta, given by the coefficients of X and Z. It is a divergence equation, and corresponds to (6. The second equation, quadratic in the momenta, corresponds to (5, and is symmetrica in the three edges by virtue of the first equation, giving the area of a triange with edges φ, φ, φ. It is the coefficient of Y on expanding (8. Quantisation The Ponzano-Regge wavefunction is a function of the edge abes on the boundary Σ of M. The ength of an edge is defined to be the vaue of the abe pus one haf. Thus the edge engths are discrete, taking the vaues j +, where j Z indexes the representations of SU(. These engths determine a Eucidean signature metric for Σ. We consider the equations satisfied when the edge engths,, around a vertex at which the three edges meet are varied, the other edges in Σ having fixed engths. The simpest exampe is for a singe tetrahedron, when { } a b c ψ(,, =, (9

Actuay the case where three edges meet at a vertex suffices to hande the genera case, as the cases where more than three edges meet can be reduced to this by the crossing move, shown in figure, which is an invertibe inear map V V and so generates no new equations []. Aso, any vertex at which three edges meet reduces to the case (9 because the Ponzano-Regge wavefunction factorises as { } a b c ψ(,, = ψ (a, b, c, other edges by the excision move, shown in figure 4 []. ( cos θ sin θ ( + cos θ Equation (8 becomes J d J m m (θ = e im φ d J m m (θ e im φ d J m m (θ e im φ. (0 m = J Our resut for the Ponzano-Regge wavefunction is that for each J Z it satisfies an equation J D ( m m ψ(,, = ( J m = J D ( m m D ( m m ψ( +m, +m, +m ( The J J matrices of numerica coefficients D mn depend on the edge engths (,,, a, b, c and are asymptotic to the corresponding d J mn (θ as the edge engths by a uniform scaing. The equation ( is a quantisation of (0 in which e imφ is repaced by the shift operator T Tψ( = ψ( + m, which was suggested as a heuristic by Ponzano and Regge. The other noteworthy feature is the factor ( J. This is for odd spin representations and gives the extension of (8 to SU( as the equation h SU( = I. This is the natura extension as the product of the matrices in (8 gives a rotation which is exacty one fu turn, which ifts to I in SU(. Proof of formua (. J +m +m +m c a b

This is equation (, with { } D m ( m = ( + +a+j+m ( +m + ( +m + a J + m + m (and ikewise for D (, D ( which, by the formua given by Edmonds [5], is asymptotic to d J m m (θ = d J m m ( θ for fixed m, m, J but a,, by a uniform scaing. Remarks. Our quantisation of the discrete Wheeer-DeWitt equation gives an appeaing physica expanation of the Ponzano-Regge wavefunction by an anaogy with other quantised systems such as partice mechanics. But it is not cear exacty what the mathematica point of our work is; can anything now be proved that was not known before? The connection between spin networks and + dimensiona gravity has aready been made in [,]. However this proceded in an indirect manner from the Biedenharn-Eiott reation to form a -term recursion reation for 6j-symbos, and then to a semi-cassica imit. We have shown here that in the Hamitonian picture the anaog of the Wheeer-DeWitt equation is exacty the Biedenharn-Eiott reation itsef. This has two advantages: firsty it makes a more direct connection with the ideas of topoogica quantum fied theory, since it focuses on the consideration of a manifod with boundary, and secondy it suggests an easier and more direct approach to making physica interpretations of other topoogica state sums. We note that the recursion reation occurs as a specia case of our formua, namey when m = m = 0 and J =. Our quantisation appears to give more information than the semicassica formua for the 6j symbos given by Ponzano and Regge. For exampe, it gives an expanation for the discreteness of the edge ength abes, which is not required by the semicassica formua. Normay one woud quantise the variabe conjugate to the ength by φ d/d. Then woud have to have a continuous spectrum. However, we are interested in quantising exp(imφ, which, making the above substitution, gives the shift operator, given by the action + m. As m is an (haf-integer, this operator natuay acts on functions of Z. Athough we have considered quantising the formuae obtained from -dimensiona metrics with a Eucidean signature, one can aso start with the corresponding Lorentzian formuae. Then there are some sign differences in ( to (5, which are refected in the fact that (8 becomes an equation in SO(, with the K s boosts and the R s unchanged, c.f. [6]. The quantisation repaces the matrix eement e Jφ
