Quantum Subcritica Bubbes UTAP-34 OCHA-PP-80 RESCEU-1/96 June 1996 Tomoko Uesugi and Masahiro Morikawa Department of Physics, Ochanomizu University, Tokyo 11, Japan arxiv:hep-ph/ v1 6 Jun 1996 Tetsuya Shiromizu Department of Physics, The University of Tokyo, Tokyo 113, Japan and Research Center for the Eary UniverseRESCEU), The University of Tokyo, Tokyo 113, Japan Abstract We quantize subcritica bubbes which are formed in the weaky first order phase transition. We find that the typica size of the therma fuctuation reduces in the quantum-statistica physics. We estimate the typica size and the ampitude of therma fuctuations near the critica temperature in the eectroweak phase transition using quantum statistica average. Furthermore based on our study, we give impication on the dynamics of phase transition. 1 Introduction The scenario of baryogenesis in the eectroweak scae[1] is attractive because we can get the data of this energy scae from recent experiments of eementary partice physics. However, whenonetrysto expainthepresent baryontoentropy ratiointheminima standard mode, some serious probems exist. 1)In order to generate sufficient baryon number, we need a deviation from therma equiibrium. This can be soved if the phase transition is strongy first order with supercooing. However, in the minima standard mode, eectroweak phase transition is estimated to be weaky first order in the 1-oop approximation []. ) CP-vioation source from CKM phase is too sma to expain present baryon to entropy ratio. 3) We coud not avoid washing out of baryon number by the sphaeron transition after the phase transition in the minima standard mode. Improvements and more precise anaysis are now in progress to sove the above probems. In this paper, we devote to the anaysis of the phase transition. To understand the dynamics of the eectroweak phase transition, one may need to consider a behavior of the therma fuctuation of the scaar fied. We study on a therma fuctuation using subcritica bubbes which was first suggested by Geiser et a[4]. In these anaysis bubbes are treated as the cassica object and assumed that the shape is spherica. Recenty one of the present authors insisted that the fuctuation of the subcritica bubbe shoud be treated quantum mechanicay. So one must quantize the bubbe and consider up to higher energy eves. In this situation, one shoud take into account the modification from the O3)-symmetry of the bubbe because the energy difference between
each eve is amost the same as differentia energy. Another reason that we need to take into account the above modification exists. In our previous studies we have convinced that the phase mixing is sufficienty attained in the experimentay aowed region on the minima standard mode. From the above reasons, the modification cannot be negected. This paper is organized as foows. In Sec. II we summarize our previous studies. In Sec. III we quantize the coective coordinate of the subcritica bubbe incuding the deviation form O3)-symmetry and estimate the quantum-statistica averaged radius of the bubbe. In Sec. IV we cacuate the fied ampitude inside the bubbe. In the fina section, we summarize our study. The typica size of cassica subcritica bubbes We summarize in this section our previous resuts on the cassica bubbes. In the weaky first order phase transition, the time deveopment of the phase transition strongy depends on the therma fuctuation. In the previous study [3], we have assumed [ ] φx) = φ + exp r 1) R t) for the spatia profie of the therma fuctuation. φ + is the fied vaue at the asymmetric vacuum phase. The Hamitonian for the radius Rt) becomes HP,R) = P MR) + MR), ) 5 MR) = 15π3/ φ + R 8. 3) This profie wi be justified near the critica temperature at which two vacua degenerate because amost a bubbes have thick was. Here we negected the term from the potentia of the scaar fied because that term vanishes near the critica temperature. Thus we obtained the typica size of therma fuctuation by thermay averaging the radius; R T = drdprexp[ βhp,r)] drdpexp[ βhp,r)] T π 3/.φ + 4) Note that this is smaer than the correation ength. On the other hand, Geiser et a. have assumed that the size of the bubbe is equa to the correation ength[4]. We think that the typica size shoud be determined from the dynamics of the phase transition. However, we encounter with a serious probem: Can one treat the therma fuctuation as the purey cassica object? Actuay, the number of state inside the bubbe is too sma; nr R T ) O1) 5) Furthermore the condition for the decoherence, another measure for the system to be cassica, is given by R T R c := 7π 3/ Tφ + ) 1/ GeV 1. 6)
On the other hand, R T 0.01GeV 1, ceary, R T < R c. Thus, one cannot expect that the subcritica bubbe is a cassica object. From the above consideration one of the authors proposed that the fuctuation shoud be treated as quantum one with statistica fuctuation-dissipation in weaky first order phase transitions[5]. In this paper, we first treat the subcritica bubbe as purey quantum and then we statisticay average the quantum bubbes. If we obtained, after our present anaysis, no drastic deviation from the previous estimate, we woud concude again, without soving the Master equation for the density matrix, that the phase transition cannot accompany the supercooing. 3 The typica size of quantum subcritica bubbes 3.1 Subcritica bubbe with modification We notice that the energy difference is the same order of magnitude as the modification energy from the spherica symmetry in the statistica averaging. Hence, in advance, we consider the contribution of the modification from the spherica configuration. We express the spatia profie of the therma fuctuation as φx) =,mφ,m r)y,m Ω), 7) Y,m Ω) is the spherica harmonics. Further, we assume the thick wa [ ] φ,m r) = φ + exp r R t) for each components. Here φ + denotes the vacuum expectation vaue of the scaar fied in the broken phase. The Hamitonian becomes HP,R) = H 0 + H H 0 ), 9) =1 H P,R) = P MR) + 16 MR)+ +1)MR). 10) The quantization and the measure probem Let us quantize the above system. Expressing the arbitrariness in the operator ordering by the parameter b, we write the quantum Hamitonian as foows; Ĥ = 1 ar R + 1 br R +c R, 11) a := MR)/R and c := [/5)+16/15)+1)]M/R). In the foowing discussion, we set b/a = N and we concentrate on ony two cases N = 1 and N =. Here one shoud be carefu on the measure in the atter case. The former case N = 1 corresponds to the operator ordering; Ĥ ˆP,R) = ˆP 8) 1 MR) ˆP +c R, 1) 3
ˆP := i R. Thus, the integra measure of this case is constant. The atter case N = corresponds to Ĥ ẑ p,z) = 1 ẑ p +, 13) z := R/R 0 ) 3/, R 0 := R/M) 1/ and ẑ p := i z. Hence the integra measure is 3.3 The wave function 0 dz 0 drr 1/. 14) Let us construct the wave function of the subcritica bubbe. The Schrödinger equation is given by i t Ψ R,t) = ĤΨ R,t). 15) For the stationary state Ψ = ψ e ie t, Ĥψ = E ψ ), the Schrödinger equation becomes we have defined [ 1 X + N 1 N +1)x +d x ǫ ) ] X = ǫ X, 16) d 4d X := R 1 N ψ R) and x := a 1/ R 17) and d := c a = ), ǫ = E ) R 1/ a = E 1/ 18) M In order to sove this equation, we take the approximation, x ǫ d 19) and we negect the first term of the potentia. Then the Schrödinger equation reduces to X +d x ǫ ) X = ǫ X. 0) d 4d This approximation wi be examined in the ater discussion. Now, we define ξ := d 1/4 x ǫ ) d and then eq. 0) becomes d X dξ +ξ X = ǫ 4d 3/ 1) X. ) As this equation is the same as that for the harmonic osciator, the eigenfunctions and eigenvaues of this equation are given by X,n ξ) 1) n e ξ d n e ξ dξ n, 3) 4
and ǫ,n = n+1, 4) 4d 3/ respectivey. Using the above eigenvaues, we examine the approximation used on the potentia under the assumption of 19). The origina potentia before the approximation is V x) := 1 ) 1 N N +1 x +d x x 0 ), 5) x 0 := ǫ,n /d. Let us ca the minimum vaue at which the first term coincides with the second term to be x. In the case of N = 1 x = x 0 1+ for n = 0,1. 6) n / This is arger than x 0 and the approximation brakes down. On the other hand, for n, x = x 0 1 7) n / is smaer than x 0 and it means that the approximation is reasonabe. In the case of N =, in a simiar way, we can show that the approximation is reasonabe ony for n 1. Thus, for ow energy states, we have to use different approximation. The simpest remedy for that is as foows. We first expand the potentia x is determined by V x) = 0. Defining Vx) Vx)+ 1 V x)x x) +, 8) η := the Schrödinger equation for the stationary state becomes d X dη +η X = [ ] 1 1/4 V x) x x), 9) 1 [ 1 V x) ] 1/ [ ǫ 4d Vx) ] X. 30) The soution is given by and X,n η) 1) n e η d n e η dη n 31) [ ] 1 ǫ [ 1 V x) ] Vx) = n+1. 3) 1/ 4d Under the above two approximation, the wave function bady behaves at R 0. This vioates the hermiticity of the Hamitonian. However, this bad behavior simpy comes 5
from our approximation and shoud not be taken seriousy. Actuay we can easiy see the true behavior near R 0. At x 1, the eq. 16) becomes Assuming X x n, this becomes d X dx + 1 ) 1 N N +1 x X 0. 33) n 1 1 ) n+ 1 ) = 0. 34) N N Thus, the reguar soution is X x 1+1/N R 1+1/N. The origina wave function is given by ψ R) R 1+1/N. The first derivative is ψ R) R 1/N. Therefore actuay the Hamitonian is a hermitian operator. 3.4 The typica size Now, we can cacuate the typica size by the quantum-statistica averaging; R Q =,ne βe,n R Q,n,ne βe,n 35) R Q,n = 0 drr α R ψ,n R) 0 drr α ψ,n R). 36) R α being the integra measure; for N = 1, α = 0, and for N =, α = 1/. The typica size of subcritica bubbes does depend on the integra measure, however after our approximation of the potentia 19), the dependence on N disappears. Then, the effect of the integra measure ony appears in the wave function with sma n. Fortunatey even for these wave functions, we can easiy show that this effect to the typica size is sma enough. We now estimate the typica size of a bubbe using the effective potentia in a finite temperature with the 1-oop approximation []. We use m W = 80.6GeV, m Z = 91.GeV and m t = 174GeV for the W-boson, the Z-boson and the top-quark masses. And we set the mass of Higgs; m H = 65GeV that is the ower imit from the experiment[6]. Accordingy, φ + = 49.4GeV and the critica temperature: T c = 98.3GeV. The resut of our numerica cacuation for the typica size is, R Q 0.01GeV 1 37) near the critica temperature. This size is arger than that of therma average: R T 0.01GeV 1. To carify the difference between cassica and quantum regime, we cacuate the distribution functionwr c )); WR c ) = = dpr α c e ir P WP,R c ) dpr α c dr e ir P ρ R c + 1 R,R c 1 ) R = R α c ρr c,r c ), 38) 6
ρ is the density matrix given by ρ R c + 1 R,R c 1 ) R [ = ρr,r ) = Tr,n e βe,n ψ,n R )ψ,n R) ]. 39) Under the present approximations, the fina form of the distribution function does not depend on the measure; WR c ) = R α c ρr c,r c ) = R c Tr,n [ e βe,n X,n R)]. 40) We depicted profie of quantum distribution function WR) soid ine) and the cassica distribution function broken ine) in figure 1. The ocation of the peak of WR) is arger than that of cassica distribution function. This is because the fuctuations in quantum distribution function comes from quantum fuctuation as we as the statistica fuctuations which is expressed in the cassica distribution function. 4 Fuctuation strength in fieds Whie, fixing R to the above averaged vaue, we can estimate the fuctuation in the fied vaue φ. Foowing the manner of previous studies [3] [4], we set [ ] φ m = At)exp r. 41) R Q In this case the Schrödinger equation becomes 1 ) m A +f A ψ = E ψ, 4) f = m [ ] 3 R Q 4 ++1) and the wave function becomes we define ψ,n a) 1) n e a, m = π3/ R 3 Q 43) d n e a da n. 44) a = mf ) 1 4 A. 45) The fuctuation of φ can be cacuated naivey by φ =,ne βe,n φ,n, 46),ne βe,n φ,n = daa ψ,n A) daψ,n A). 47) The resut of our numerica cacuation becomes φ 30.4GeV. 48) At the refection point, φ = φ = 10.5GeV. The fuctuation 48) we exceeds φ near the symmetric vacuum. This fact means that the true and fase phases are we mixed at the scae typica in the fuctuations above the critica temperature. Therefore the use of 1-oop approximation of the effective potentia is no onger vaid. 7
5 Summary In this paper, we quantized the subcritica bubbes and using quantum statistics, we cacuated the typica size of subcritica bubbes as we as the typica fuctuation of fieds. As a resut of our cacuations, we found that the typica size of subcritica bubbes is arger than that cacuated by the cassica therma average, and that the size of the typica fuctuation of the fied simiary we exceeds the first refection point in our case. Therefore we may concude that the phase transition cannot accompany supercooing. On the other hand, we must confess that the above study is quite quaitative. Furthermore, we coud not justify whether the eectroweak phase transition is first order or not as ong as we use the 1-oop approximation for the effective potentia, not effective action. Finay, we must mention the assumptions used here. First, we have assumed the Gaussian distribution for the spatia profie of the therma fuctuation as in the previous studies. However there is no dynamica justification on this Gaussian distribution. Second, in order to consider the deviation from the spherica symmetric configuration, we assumed thateachcomponentdoesnotdependontheparameter,n). Wehopethatwecanjustify the above assumptions in our quantitative study in the near future. Acknowedgment TS thanks H. Sato, K. Sato and J. Yokoyama for their discussions and comments.
