1 Happy Holidays F R O M T H E M O C H I Z U K I O H A N A We ve had a busy but happy year here in the Mochizuki household! One of the many blessings of this time of the year is the chance for us to connect with our friends and family. We take this opportunity to reflect upon our last 365 days and share it with you. H I G H L I G H T S In the spring, Toshi s family came to the Big Island for vacation. It had been five years since his parents last visited, and it was the first time for his younger sister and brother-in-law. They saw the sunset on Mauna Kea, walked on the beautiful beaches, drove down into Waipio valley, and went on a special helicopter tour with a waterfall landing. Although it was a brief stay, we hope that it was an unforgettable one as well. We spent our summer in Japan, traveling to Tokyo, Hiroshima, and Kyoto for sightseeing; meeting Shiho s sister and longtime friends in Kobe; spending time with Toshi s family in his hometown Shizuoka; and accompanying Lina in Yokohama. We all (including Shione s best friend from middle school) had a spectacular summer vacation.
2 Shiho Shiho s activity booking business has been prospering with the recovery of direct flights between Japan and the Big Island. Her vacation rental has been remarkably busy as well. She has been working around her hectic work schedule in order to help her children. Amazingly, she managed to find time to drive Kaisei to his soccer practices, give Shione moral support to finish her schoolwork, and even FaceTime Lina for cyber cooking classes. This year, she finally said goodbye to her beloved Honda Odyssey after 14 years. Without the ghetto van the Mochizuki s are not easily recognized on the roads anymore. With all that has been going on, time has flied by in the blink of an eye. Shiho s resolution of the year 2017 was to walk more frequently, but she fell back on this as she had less time on her hands. However, greatly determined to end 2017 and start 2018 strong, she has recently been walking with the dogs more regularly. 3 Toshi Toshi has a couple more years left before he reaches his 50 s. He may be up to par physically, but his mental aging and extreme forgetfulness is quite noticeable. It is fortunate that he is still an outstanding ( and somewhat bilingual) helicopter pilot with the number of Japanese passengers significantly growing. Although he does not enjoy his increased workload, it is concealed by his excitement towards sharing the beautiful scenery of the island. He was also involved in recording two Japanese TV films to promote the Big Island was a year of reunions; he met an old friend in Arizona during Kaisei s Olympic Development Program tournament, another friend from Canada who traveled to Hawaii with his family, and the wonderful Brazilian friends he made 3 years ago at the World Cup. To start off the new year, Toshi got approval to use the Waikoloa Elementary School basketball courts for futsal. He aspires to foster more quality soccer players from the community. 4 Lina 2 0 Y E A R S O L D This year Lina has been working hard towards finishing up her undergraduate studies. She spent the summer in Yokohama, Japan where she took classes at Temple University. Alongside of her studies, she completed an internship with the non-profit organization CITYNET. During her time as an intern, she assisted in planning an international conference that city mayors and World Bank members attended. She gained great skill in networking and insight into how non-profits operate. Many thanks to her host family and friends who made it an unforgettable experience. After returning, she took her last term of classes at the University of Oregon. She now has a Bachelor of Arts in Environmental Studies, International Studies, and Japanese with a minor in East Asian Studies. Unfortunately, she will not be able to make it home this holiday season being busy with her job search. However, there is a lot for her to celebrate. Not only is she graduating shortly, but she is also turning 21. Congratulations and Happy Birthday! 5 Shione 1 7 Y E A R S O L D Shione managed to complete the first semester of her last year of high school. Unchangingly, she has been very busy this year. She was elected as the senior class president and assumed the responsibility for organizing the upper school campout and leading all class events. Additionally, as part of the student council, she headed an outstanding food drive and collected 2.87 tons of canned goods for the community. She has also been doing volunteer work as a member of National Honor Society, such as rebuilding the playground that she played on as a child. This school year, she received an impressive debate scholarship and was promoted to overall captain. Regardless of switching to a new form of debate, she has been successful at the monthly debate tournaments. Although conflicting with debate, she is still committed to both paddling and hula. Her week is occupied by paddling practice or regattas and hula performances. Now, she is in the process of submitting college applications. She will be anxiously waiting to hear back from her colleges as she welcomes the new year! 6 Kaisei 1 3 Y E A R S O L D Kaisei transferred schools from Parker to HPA, but he immediately fit in to the new environment. He has successfully kept up with both his academics and sports. Once again, Kaisei and his soccer team did excellent this season and placed 2nd on the island. In the futsal league, his team did even better and was undefeated. During the fall, he participated in the Player Development Program in Maui and had an exceptional experience. Along with all of this, he also attended the Genoa CFC ID Camp and got scouted. Through his hard training, Kaisei has become more and more fit. He is now training towards relaying with his dad in the Lavaman Triathlon, in which Toshi will swim and bike, and Kaisei will run. Because of his recent interest in fishing, he decided to do his school s year-long project on fishing line pollution. By the end of the school year, he will have a PSA video completed. Over the summer, Kaisei went to middle school in Japan for the first time. Despite getting awfully sick for two whole weeks, he still had a memorable time.
