1 L I T T L E L I O N C H A L L E N G E Dear Teacher: We are excited to have you and your students participate in Little Lion Challenge Day this year! Little Lion Challenge Day is February 11th and it is a day where we celebrate and spread Acts of Kindness. It kicks off a full year of kindness fun and we hope you and your students enjoy this 'heart therapy." This year, we have set our sights on having 1000 kindness acts performed in and around our community. It s easy, it s fun, and here s how to get started: Decide on an act of kindness. What would your class like to do? If you need a little inspiration, visit littlelionchallenge.org and click on "100 Acts of Kindness You Can Do with Kids." Perform your act of kindness and give the recipient the card attached with this letter OR have students make their own Kindness Cards (instructions included in this packet!). The Kindness Cards let recipients know that the act of kindness is part of Little Lion Challenge. Hopefully they'll keep the kindness going! Post a picture or video or quick comment about how you participated in Little Lion Challenge on social media with the hashtag #LittleLionChallenge. All public posts will be accumulated and shared on LittleLionChallenge.org -- so you can watch the kindness happening in real time! Just go to the website and click on "Kindness in Action." Thank you for being a part of our special event! Small acts of kindness can make a BIG ROAR. In gratitude, The Little Lion Challenge Team Heather and Patrick Wash founded the Little Lion made each day and the small acts of kindness that made all the difference to their family. We believe that C O N T A C T E M A I L : h e l l l i t t l e l i o n c h a l l e n g e. o r g W E B : l i t t l e l i o n c h a l l e n g e. o r g K I N D N E S S R E Q U E S T : l i t t l e l i o n c h a l l e n g e. o r g F A C E B O O K : f a c e b o o k. c o m / l i t t l e l i o n c h a l l e n g e K I N D N E S S I N A C T I O N : # L I T T L E L I O N C H A L L E N G E
2 G E T T I N G S T A R T E D C L A S S D I S C U S S I O N Q U E S T I O N S DISCUSS. Introduce the idea of kindness to students and have a class discussion. We've given you some ideas to spark conversation in the sidebar! EXPLAIN AND BRAINSTORM: Tell students that this year, your class is participating in Little Lion Challenge. Your mission? To do identify a need and perform an act of kindness! The whole class can work together or students can perform individual acts of kindness. Brainstorm together. What is one act of kindness they could do for a family member? For a friend? For someone in the community? If you need a little inspiration, visit littlelionchallenge.org and click on "100 Acts of Kindness You Can Do with Kids." Has anyone ever done something for you anonymously, without expecting something in return? How did that make you feel? Have you ever done something kind for someone for no other reason other than to be nice? How did your act of kindness make the recipient feel? MAKE A PLAN: What will you need to perform your act of kindness? Make a plan. (This may also be a good time to make Kindness Cards if students are doing individual acts of kindness!) PERFORM YOUR ACT OF KINDNESS: This is the fun part! Make sure you give the recipient a Kindness Card. MAKE A LITTLE SOCIAL MEDIA ROAR: Post a Heather and Patrick Wash founded the Little Lion picture or video or quick comment about how you participated in Little Lion Challenge on social media with the hashtag #LittleLionChallenge. All public posts will be accumulated and shared on made LittleLionChallenge.org each day and the small acts of -- kindness so you can that watch the made all the difference to their family. We believe that kindness happening in real time! Just go to the website and click on "Kindness in Action." Why are Random acts of Kindness important? What is the effect of kindness? On you? On the recipient? On our community? What does it mean to you when you hear small acts of kindness can make a BIG ROAR? # L I T T L E L I O N C H A L L E N G E

5 L E S S O N I D E A : A L P H A B E T K I N D N E S S B O O K S OBJECTIVE: Have your class create an Alphabet Kindness Book. It s simple, easy and a perfect way to spend time promoting kindness. ASSIGN A LETTER: Assign each child a letter of the alphabet. COMPOSE A SENTENCE: Using their assigned letter, have each child compose a sentence describing a random act of kindness idea. For example: If the child received the letter (A), they could possibly write Act kind to someone in the lunchroom (B) Bring dirty dishes to the sink (C) Compliment a stranger DRAW A PICTURE: Have the child draw a picture that illustrates the kindness described in their letter sentence. BIND YOUR BOOK: Collect each child s sentence and picture and bind them all together to make a classroom book. It is sure to be a classroom favorite! C L A S S R O O M I D E A : T H E S H O U T O U T B O X OBJECTIVE: Create a box and place it in the back of the room with pencils and small slips of papers that start with I really like how..., I noticed that..., or I d like to give a shout- out to... GIVE A SHOUT OUT: Throughout the day, the teacher, teacher's assistant, and students can write shout outs for classmates and place them in the box. READ ALOUD: Take the shout outs and read them aloud at the end of each day. You can fit a lot of shout-outs in the last few minutes of the day, so be sure to make time for it and make it part of your daily routine. The kids will enjoy this # L Iand T T Lso Ewill L I Oyou! 6 L E S S O N I D E A : T H E W R I T E A R O U N D OBJECTIVE: This wonderful activity gives students a chance to appreciate and complement one another. They will be building writing fluency as well as confidence in others. HANDOUT: Give each student a handout that includes several sentences starters on it. Be sure to leave space for the children to write after each one! WRITE NAMES: Have each student write their name at the top of their own paper, and then collect them. S E N T E N C E S T A R T E R S STUDENTS WRITE: Randomly pass them out to other students in the classroom while asking them to stay silent. Have that student write something about the person of whose paper they received. They can respond to one sentence starter or more if they like, and multiple students can respond to the same sentence starters. One idea I ve gotten from you is... I really like your personality because... I know I can count on you when... I really appreciate when you... Some adjectives that describe you are... After a few minutes, have the students pass the paper to a different classmate until you have completed several rounds of A B O passing. U T U S PASS PAPERS BACK: Collect the paper and pass them back to the owners to read and enjoy. I am impressed by the way you... I look forward to seeing you because... One time you really helped me was when... # L I T T L E L I O N C H A L L E N G E
