ASYMPTOTIC DILATION OF REGULAR HOMEOMORPHISMS axiv:85.98v [math.cv] May 8 ANATOLY GOLBERG, RUSLAN SALIMOV, AND MARIA STEFANCHUK ABSTRACT. We study the asymtotic behavio of the atio / z as z fo maings diffeentiable a.e. in the unit disc with non-degeneated Jacobian. The main tools involve the length-aea functionals and angula dilatations deending on some eal numbe. The esults ae alied to homeomohic solutions of a nonlinea Beltami equation. The estimates ae illustated by examles.. INTRODUCTION.. A vey inteesting oblem of classical Comlex Analysis is to extend Schwaz s Lemma to moe geneal classes of functions than analytic ones. A esult of such tye has been established by Teichmülle [8] fo quasiconfomal maings. He oved the existence of limit of / z at the oigin and called it asymtotic dilation assuming the finiteness of the integal of a fom z < (K f(z) )/ z dxdy. Hee K f (z) stands fo the eal coefficient of quasiconfomality of the maing f. Late the same esult has been obtained by a diffeent method (Ahlfos inequalities) by Wittich [9]. Fo extensions of such esults see also [3], [3], [4] and othes. The most of these esults involve the module technique (extemal lengths). In the ae we aly the length-aea method oiginated in 9 s and isoeimetic inequality; see, e.g. [], [4], [], [7]. Thoughout the ae we conside sense-eseving homeomohisms fom the Sobolev class W, in the unit disc equiing egulaity and ossessing Lusin s (N)-oety (esevation of sets with zeo measue). The egulaity of a maing in a domain means its diffeentiability almost eveywhee (a.e.) and nonvanishing Jacobian a.e. Since we study the W, - homeomohisms, the diffeentiability a.e. follows a ioi; see, e.g. []. Note that nonvanishing Jacobian is equivalent to Lusin s (N )-oety. In this ae the asymtotic behavio (asymtotic dilation) of such maings is studied unde assumtion that some integal mean of the angula dilatation is finite. Date: July 6, 8 :37 (AsymDil.tex). 2 A. GOLBERG, R. SALIMOV, AND M. STEFANCHUK.. Thee ae vaious counteats of diectional dilatations in the lane; see, e.g. [], [9], [5]. These dilatations ae much flexible than the classical (inne, oute, linea) ones and ovide the imotant tools fo investigation of al oeties of quasiconfomal maings in the Eucledian and moe geneal metic saces (cf. [5], [6], [8]). We use the following definition. Let D be a domain incand f : D C be a egula homeomohism of Sobolev class W,. Fo any >, the quantity (.) D (z,)=d (e iθ,)= f θ(e iθ ) J f (e iθ ) is called -angula dilatation of f at a oint z D, z, with esect to the oigin. Fo simlicity of notations, we wite D (z)=d (z,)..3. Let B ={z C: z <}, γ ={z C: z =}, and B=B. Ou fist esult states: Theoem.. Let f : B B be a egula homeomohism of Sobolev class W, ossessing Lusin s(n)-oety, and f() =. Suose that thee exists k such that fo >, (.) lim inf π D (z) dxdy k<. Then (.3) lim inf c k <, z z whee c is a ositive constant deending only on. Some esults elated to (.3) ae given in [7], [], [6]. B. AUXILIARY RESULTS We esent seveal needed eliminay esults. Some of those have an intinsic inteest... Fo a measuable function Q : D [,+ ] and >, denote (.) q ()= Q (z) dz. π γ When Q(z)=D (z), we wite q ()=d (). The following statement ovides a diffeential inequality fo the aea functional S() = m( f(b )), whee m denotes the two dimensional Lebesgue measue.
ASYMPTOTIC DILATION OF REGULAR HOMEOMORPHISMS 3 Lemma.. Let f : B B be a egula W, -homeomohism with Lusin s (N)-oety, and >. Then fo a.a. [,], (.) S () π d ()S (). Poof. Denote by L() the length of cuve f(e iθ ), θ π. Fo a.a. [,], L()= π and by Hölde s inequality, (.3) L () f θ (e iθ ) dθ = π [ D (e iθ ) π ] [ ] D (e iθ [ ) J f (e )] iθ dθ, dθ Due to Lusin s(n)-oety and the Fubini theoem, π J f (e iθ ) dθ. S()= B J f (z)dxdy= π J f (te iθ )t dθ ; hence, fo a.a. [,], S () = π J f (e iθ ) dθ. Estimating the last integal by (.3) and using (.) fo Q(z)=D (z), one obtains (.4) S () L () (π) d (). Combining (.4) with the lana isoeimetic inequality L () 4πS() imlies the desied elation (.). The inequality (.4) allows us to deive a counteat of the classical length-aea incile fo confomal and quasiconfomal maings; see, e.g. [7]. Integating (.4), one gets fo < < < <, L ()d (π) d () S( ) S( ) S( ).
4 A. GOLBERG, R. SALIMOV, AND M. STEFANCHUK.. The ue bounds fo the images of B unde egula homeomohisms of Sobolev class W, ae established in the following statement fo any >. Fo the case =, we efe to [4, Poosition 3.7]. Lemma.. Let f : B B be a egula W, -homeomohism with Lusin s (N)-oety, and >. Then fo a.a. [,], (.5) S() π( ) Poof. By (.) fo a.a. [,], S ()d S () π and integating ove the segment[,], we obtain g (t) π t d (t) d d (), t d (t), whee g (t)= S (t). This function is nondeceasing on [,], and g (t) g () g ()= ) (S () S (). Combining the last two inequalities, we have. S () S () π This imlies the inequality (.5), because fo >, t d (t). S () S () S () π ( ) d (t)..3. The following esult estimates the integals of the tye (.) in the tems of integal aveages fo Q.
ASYMPTOTIC DILATION OF REGULAR HOMEOMORPHISMS 5 Lemma.3. Let > and Q: B [, ] be ally integable with the exonent Then fo any ε [; ] the following estimate ε d ε q () 4πε Q (z)dxdy, ε holds, whee q () is defined by (.). B ε in B. Poof. Notify that ε = ε ε ( Q γ (z) dz ) γ Q (z) dz d, one obtains by Hölde s inequality with the exonents and = /( ), ε ε d ε ( ) Q (z) dz d. ε ε γ (z) dz γ Q Now by the Fubini theoem, ε d ( ) ε Q (z) dz γ 4 π ε π(ε) B ε Q (z)dxdy, which comletes the oof..4. We also ovide a lowe bound fo S() when < <. Lemma.4. Let f : B B be a egula W, -homeomohism ossessing Lusin s (N)- oety, and < <. Then fo a.a. [,], (.6) S() π( ) t d (t).
6 A. GOLBERG, R. SALIMOV, AND M. STEFANCHUK Poof. Integating (.) along the segment[, ], and aguing simila to the oof of Lemma., we aive at S () S () π t d (t), which imlies (.6), because S()=. Lemma.4 yields that fo any homeomohism f : B B satisfying its assumtions, the integal /(t d (t)) always conveges. Indeed, fo < <, we have the estimate π( ) t d (t) which imlies Now letting, one obtains S() π, t d (t), (,). t d (t) <. 3. PROOFS OF UPPER BOUNDS AND ILLUSTRATING EXAMPLES 3.. We stat with the oof of Theoem.. Poof. Let l f ()= min. Since f()=, z = πl f () S(), o equivalently, S() (3.) l f () π. It follows fom combining Lemmas. and.3 that fo >, (3.) S() π c 4π B D (z) dxdy whee [, ] and c is a ositive constant deending only on. Hee we have weakened the inequality (.5) elacing the limits and by and, [, ]. ( ),
Now by (3.), (3.) and (.), ASYMPTOTIC DILATION OF REGULAR HOMEOMORPHISMS 7 lim inf z z l f () = liminf liminf liminf B S() π c 4π D with c > deending only on. This comletes the oof. (z) dxdy ( ) c k, 3.. We now illustate the shaness of the gowth ode in the inequality (.3). Examle 3.. Conside f : B B given by f(z)=kz, < k. and By a diect calculation, letting z=e iθ, the atial deivatives Hence, and theefoe, On the othe hand, lim f θ = kie iθ, f = ke iθ J f (e iθ) = Im( f θ f ) = k. ( D e iθ) = f ( θ J ) f e iθ = k, π B D (z) dxdy lim = k. z z = k The next examle shows that the condition (.) in Theoem. cannot be omitted. Examle 3.. Assume that >and f is an automohism of the unit discbof the fom and f()=. f(z)= +( ) z t ( ln e t ) z z, fo z,
8 A. GOLBERG, R. SALIMOV, AND M. STEFANCHUK We shall use the notations I()=+( ) t ( ln e t fo, R()=I (), if, and extend R() to the oigin by R()=. Then f(z) = R()e iθ, whee z = e iθ. Note that f is a diffeomohism in B\{}, which imlies that f W, (B\{}), although f belongs to W, in the whole disc B. Denote by λ and λ the maximal and minimal stetchings of f at z=e iθ, <<, then λ = R()/, λ = R ()=R() ln (e/)i (), and B λ dxdy= B R( z ) z dxdy M B dxdy z ) = πm <, whee M = max, B = {z C : z }. By a diect calculation, f = R ()e iθ, f θ = z B ir()e iθ, and J f (e iθ )= Im( ) R()R () f θ f =. Hence, and theefoe, D (e iθ )= f θ J f (e iθ ) = R () (ln R () = e ), lim inf π D B Now instead of (.3), we have by L Hoital s ule, lim inf =. z z 3.4. As the consequences of Theoem., we obtain Coollay 3.3. If D (z) k< fo a.a. z B, then (z)dxdy=. lim inf c k, z z with a ositive constant c deending only on.
ASYMPTOTIC DILATION OF REGULAR HOMEOMORPHISMS 9 Coollay 3.4. Let f : B B be a egula homeomohism of Sobolev class W,, ossessing Lusin s(n)-oety and satisfying f() =. Assume that > and Then lim inf We illustate the last coollay by π D B lim inf =. z z (z)dxdy=. Examle 3.5. Take a adial stetching f(z)=z z α, α >, of the unit discb. and Then, letting z=e iθ, f(z)= α+ e iθ, Theefoe, and fo >, On the othe hand, f θ = i α+ e iθ, f =(α+ ) α e iθ J f (e iθ) = Im( f θ f ) =(α+ ) α. ( D e iθ) = f ( θ J ) f e iθ = α+ α( ), lim π D B lim =. z z (z)dxdy= The asymtotic dilation of egula homeomohisms f : B B can be established also by alying a diffeent assumtion, which we call limsu condition. Theoem 3.6. Let f : B B be a egula homeomohism of Sobolev class W, ossessing Lusin s (N)-oety and nomalized by f()=. Suose that > and thee exists k such that Then (3.3) lim inf z k = limsu z ( ) t d (t). k.
A. GOLBERG, R. SALIMOV, AND M. STEFANCHUK Poof. Aguing similaly to the beginning of the oof of Theoem. and alying the ue bound (.5) fo S(), one gets lim inf liminf z z liminf S() π ( ) t d (t) = ( ) k. The shaness of the ue bound (3.3) in Theoem 3.6 is illustated by Examle 3.. Indeed, by (.) D (z)= k, thus, d (t)= k fo all t (,). Theefoe, lim su Denoting k = ( ) k, we have k =( ) t d (t) = ( ) k. k, which coincides with lim z / z. 4. LOWER AND UPPER BOUNDS FOR THE RATIO / z AND FOR JACOBIAN 4.. The asymtotic dilation of egula homeomohisms f : B B can be deived by alying the following lim su conditions. Theoem 4.. Let f : B B be a egula homeomohism of Sobolev class W, ossessing Lusin s(n)-oety, and f()=. Suose that < <and thee exists k such that Then k = limsu (4.) lim su ( ) z z t d (t). k. Poof. Denote L f ()=max. Since f()=, we have πl f () S(), o equivalently, z = L f () S() π.
ASYMPTOTIC DILATION OF REGULAR HOMEOMORPHISMS Thus, S() lim su limsu z z π limsu ( ) t d (t) = ( ) k. We illustate the shaness of the lowe bound (4.) in Theoem 4. by the same examle (Examle 3.). Indeed, the condition (4.) is fulfilled with k = k ( ), and lim / z = k <. 4.. As a consequence of Theoems 4. and 3.6, one obtains, when the atio / z has only one limit oint, the following statement. Theoem 4.. Let f : B B be a egula homeomohism of Sobolev class W, ossessing Lusin s(n)-oety, and f()=. Suose that < <and thee exist k and k such that k = limsu t d (t), k = limsu t d (t). Then, if lim z / z = A, the following double estimate (4.) ( ) k holds. Hee = /( ), < <. A ( ) k, Poof. The oof immediately follows fom the assetions of the above theoems fo, < <, and = /( ), < <. Remak 4.3. The inequality (4.) ovides the following elation between the constants k and k in Theoem 4., k ( ) ( ) k, < <.
A. GOLBERG, R. SALIMOV, AND M. STEFANCHUK 4.3. The estimates established in Lemmas. and.4 imly the following esult concening the aea deivative and the Jacobian at the oigin. Theoem 4.4. Let f : B B be a egula homeomohism of Sobolev class W, ossessing Lusin s (N)-oety. Suose that fo eal numbes and s, < < < s <, thee exist and coincide the following limits s lim( ) t = lim(s ) s s d (t) t s = A. d s (t) Then, the aea deivative µ f exists at, and µ f ()= lim S() π = A. Poof. Alying Lemmas. and.4 to S()/π, and letting, one obtains the assetion of Theoem 4.4. Coollay 4.5. If z = is a oint of diffeentiability of f, then J f ()=A. 5. NONLINEAR BELTRAMI EQUATION 5.. Let D be a domain in C and µ : D C be a measuable function with µ(z) < a.e. in D. The linea PDE (5.) f z = µ(z) f z. is called the Beltami equation; hee z=x+iy, f z = ( f x+ i f y ), f z = ( f x i f y ). The function µ is called the comlex dilatation, and K µ (z)= + µ(z) µ(z) is the eal dilatation coefficient (o Laventiev coefficient) of (5.). Fo the case when K µ is not essentially bounded, i.e. K µ =, (5.) is called the degeneate Beltami equation. 5.. Let σ : D C be a measuable function, and m. We conside the following nonlinea equation (5.) f = σ(e iθ ) f θ m f θ, witten in the ola coodinates(,θ). Hee f and f θ ae the atial deivatives of f in and θ, esectively, satisfying f = z f z + z f z, f θ = i(z f z z f z ).
ASYMPTOTIC DILATION OF REGULAR HOMEOMORPHISMS 3 The equation (5.) in the Catesian coodinates has the fom (5.3) f z = A(z) z f z z f z m z A(z) z f z z f z m + z f z, whee A(z)=σ(z) z i, o f z = A(z)( z f z Re(z f z f z )+ z f z ) m/ A(z) ( z f z Re(z f z f z )+ z f z ) m/ + z z f z. Note that in the case m =, the equation (5.) is the usial Beltami equation (5.) with the comlex dilatation µ(z)= z z A(z) A(z) Now we esent an alication of the main esult to homeomohic solutions of the nonlinea equation (5.). Theoem 5.. Let f : B B be a egula homeomohic solution of the equation (5.) which belongs to Sobolev class W,, and nomalized by f()=. Assume that the coefficient σ :B C satisfies the following condition m+ (5.4) lim inf dxdy π σ z (Imσ(z)) m+ <. Then m lim inf c m σ z z <, whee c m is a ositive constant deending on the aamete m. B Poof. In the ola coodinates, the Jacobian of a sense-eseving maing f has the fom J f (e iθ )= Im( f f θ ), then the equalities (.) and (5.) yield, D (z)= f θ f θ m+ Im( σ(z)). Letting = m +, one ewites the condition (.) as dxdy lim inf π B z (Im( σ(z))) m+ m+ σ. Then, by Theoem., m lim inf c m σ z z, which comletes the oof. Hee c m = c m+ (fom Theoem.) deends only on m.
4 A. GOLBERG, R. SALIMOV, AND M. STEFANCHUK Examle 5.. Assume that m> and κ >. Conside the equation (5.5) f = i κ m+ f θ m f θ, in the unit disc. Now σ = iκ m and satisfies the condition (5.4) with σ = κ. It is easy to check that f = κ m e iθ is a solution of the equation (5.5), fo which lim = κ m <. z z Acknowledgment.
