2 Wordswort h's out rageous, profound inversion, "The Child is fat her of t he Man" ("My Heart Leaps Up"), may not by it self have creat ed t he generat ion gap; but it epit omizes t he Romant ic t endency t o polarize childhood and adult life a t endency st ill present in lat e t went iet h- cent ury visions of childhood as eit her dream or night mare or bot h. The enduring Romant ic image of t he child whole, pure, radiant, unbroken, almost unspoken emphasizes by it s very sublimit y t he abyss bot h Blake and Wordswort h discovered bet ween t heir chimney-sweeps and cot t age girls and t he worlds and words of t he grownup. Major gaps open bet ween t he t wo visionaries t hemselves, however, regarding t he nat ure and ext ent of t heir dependence on t heir powers of percept ion. Preferring t he spirit ual realit y of his visions, Blake repudiat ed t he mat erial world: "We are led t o Believe a Lie,/When we see Wit h not Thro' t he Eye" ("Auguries of Innocence"); nevert heless, he commanded t he visual art s of drawing, paint ing and engraving as well as poet ry for t he explorat ion and communicat ion of his visions. The laborious copperengraving process he learned as a yout h must have seemed t he ant it hesis of t he visions t hemselves; yet it a orded him bot h a discipline and a means of expression denied t o Wordswort h, who had no ot her recourse if words failed him. Furt hermore, Blake t ypically played t he visual against t he verbal in his illuminat ed works, creat ing rich ambiguit ies t hat ult imat ely enhance his abilit y t o communicat e his visions. At least part ly for t hese reasons Blake could confront his cont rary st at es of innocence and experience wit h relat ive serenit y and pass beyond t hem t o higher levels of imaginat ive vision. In t he verse let t er t o Thomas But t s, Blake art iculat es his double vision in a well-known descript ion of a t hist le: Wit h my inward Eye 't is an old Man grey; Wit h my out ward, a Thist le across my way. And he concluded t he same let t er:

3 Now I a fourfold vision see, And a fourfold vision is given t o me. 'Tis fourfold in my supreme delight And t hreefold in so Beulah's night And t wofold Always. May God us keep From Single vision and Newt on's sleep! Blake's fear of t he scient ific observer's supposedly unbiased object ivit y "Newt on's sleep!" is apt ly enough a fear of solipsism a well; t here must be a dialogue bet ween int ernal and ext ernal realit ies, t he old man and t he t hist le, before visionary advancement is possible, before one can hope t o build Jerusalem in England's green and pleasant land. Wordswort h knew t his fear also: indeed for him and most ot her Romant ic and post -Romant ic writ ers t he gap bet ween subject and object t ended always t o widen, t he elusive "celest ial light " of early vision increasingly shadowed in adult life and language by t he "light of common day" ("Ode: Int imat ions of Immort alit y from Recollect ion of Early Childhood," Brooks 128). Bound t o t he mat erial world by t he love his mot her t aught him before her early deat h (Prelude 2 [1850]: ), t he orphan Wordswort h was condemned t o search in and t hrough nat ure t he mat erial world of deat h t hat Blake despised for t hose few shining moment s, "Gleams like t he flashing of a shield" (Prelude 1: 586), t hat might show him his pat h back and down t ime and space while simult aneously light ing his way int o t he fut ure as man and poet. Alt hough heavily dependent upon his own power of percept ion and t he eyes and words of his more observant sist er Dorot hy Wordswort h, like Blake, knew [End Page 170] physical sight alone t o be ext remely limit ing, reduct ive; it was bet t er underst ood as a met aphor descript ive of a deeper, more creat ive level of cont emplat ion. In "Tint ern Abbey" he praises "That serene and blessed mood" t hrough which we are laid asleep In body, and become a living soul:
