Geography Plan Introductory Statement and Rationale Introductory Statement This plan was formulated by Ann Barron, Karen Lynch and Mary Hoey on a Planning Day on 8 December Rationale Having attended in-service for geography we decided to draw up a plan which we hope will benefit the teaching and learning of geography in the school conform with the principles outlined in the Primary Curriculum review the existing plan for geography in light of the 1999 Primary School Curriculum. Visions and aims A. Vision. We seek to assist the children in our school in the study of three main themes in geography: place, space and environment, while giving them the opportunity to develop the skills and tools with which to document the world of geography. B. Aims. We endorse the aims of the Primary School Curriculum for geography as laid out in the curriculum P Curriculum planning Strands and strand units Infant Classes 16/17 Strand Human Environment Natural Environment Environmental awareness Strand Unit Living in local community, family, homes, school, work, play, people, places in other areas. 4 Infants p First & Second p Third & Fourth p Fifth & Sixth p In the Curriculum book Children s Ideas. In general children s ideas of places and space is used as a startying for geography ideas Strategies to find out what children know already o Talk & discussion o Questioning o Listening o Problem solving tasks o Drawing o Teacher designated tasks and tests Approaches & Methodologies The key methodologies of the Primary School Curriculum are used as part of the geography programme Active learning Problem solving Developing skills through content Talk & discussion Co-operative learning Use of the environment Teachers follow recommended sequence for geography, local, regional, national, European, global, and reflect it back to their own location. Linkage and integration Linkage; Strands are linked with each other e.g. Human environment and care for the environment. Many strands may be linked when using a thematic approach to a topic. Integration; Geography is often integrated with other subjects e.g. Art construction of a volcano Maths measuring P.E. outdoor adventure activity Irish logainmneacha Science weather and geology History local environmental studies Multi-grade situations In our multiclass situation we use:
Thematic approach one theme but gear the approach to different class levels Integration with other subjects e.g. S.E.S.E., History, Science, SPHE, Maths, Visual arts and P.E. We follow the thematic approach using a variety of resources e.g. text books (Unlocking SESE, Geography Quest), ICT, videos and other geography schemes e.g. Fallons maps of Ireland. Assessment and record keeping a. Assessment The following are assessed Progress in the children s knowledge of environmental matters Acquisition of geographical skills Development of attitudes Tools for assessment Teacher observation Teacher designed tasks and tests Work samples, portfolios and projects The information gained from assessments would aid in future planning e.g. what areas need more focus. b. Record keeping Portfolios kept on a yearly basis Projects displayed for the year Portfolios, copy work and projects go home for parents to see Parents can get involved with project work and location information Children with different needs All efforts are made to ensure that children with emotional, behavioural or physical needs are catered for. Individual, group work, co-operative and paired work help to ensure the participation of children with special needs. Children who were born or have lived in other countries would be encouraged to share their experiences within the geography programme. Equality of Participation and Access Equal opportunities are given to boys and girls to participate in classes/activities. The geography programme in our school celebrates differences as well as promoting cultural awareness. Timetable
Infants 2 hours SESE First/Second 3 hours SESE Third/sixth 3 hours p/w SESE 1 Hour History 1 Hour Geography 1 hour Science Sometimes geography and history are blocked e.g. World War 2, countries involced, Geography of those countries. Resources and ICT Maps and wall charts Globes Text Books, Unlocking SESE, JI-2 nd Class, Geography Quest 3 rd 6 th Classes Atlas Local Information and maps Library Library Books Topic related books DVD for example, Shannon - River of Dreams, Leitrim Take a Closer Look Digital Camera Illustrated Wall Map of Connacht and workbooks ICT Internet on Interactive Whiteboard Google Earth, Met Eireann Word Processing CD Roms for recording information CD Roms for example, Know your Ireland, Know your Europe, Encarta, Britannica. Storage Have them centrally stored in the staffroom in labelled boxes. Health and Safety Children will be made aware of safety issues when on Environmental trails Field trips Putting projects together Studying outdoor environment They will be supervised at all times. Individual teachers planning and reporting The staff formulate the whole school plan together and it will be accessible to staff in the whole school plan folder.
We plan using an integration of strands/ strand units and thematic approach in the teaching of Geography The Cuntas Miosuil will aid in keeping account of topics covered throughout the year. Staff Development Resource Materials are currently located. Teaching methodologies are in line with current research. Teachers receive contact from local teacher centres regarding courses available. Parental Involvement Parents are encouraged to be involved in geography through Homework Local knowledge Projects Questionnaires Community School tours involve links with local areas of geographical interest e.g. Arigna Mines, seaside, farms. Community links are fostered e.g. NWPS visit the school to give workshops each year. Places of Historical interest Tours are designed to include aspects of geographical interest. Aim to organise visits to these as we are prioritising local geography Success criteria An indication of the success of the plan will be Teacher/parent feedback Children feedback, work they have produced Inspectors suggestions/reports The plan we are now formulating hopes to promote these key considerations That geography is about developing a sense of space and place That there is a balance between process (how a child learns) and content (what a child learns). Children s ideas of space and place are used as a starting point. That the curriculum is spiral and development in its structure. That geography is integrated across the curriculum from Infants to 6 th class. The Primary resource or geography is the environment starting with the local, then regional, national, European and global. Implementation
a) The plan will be supported and developed by all partners in education BOM, teachers, pupils, parents, and implemented by the teachers. b) Time frame This plan will be implemented from 8 December The plan will be reviewed regularly. Ratification and Communication This plan was ratified by the Board of Management of Largy N.S. at its meeting on 12 May Parents may view this plan at the school on appointment with the Principal.
