Em ulat ion Handbook Ender 's Shadow by Orson Scot t Card "Orson Scot t Card m ade a st rong case for being t he best w rit er science fict ion has t o offer." - The Houston Post "Card is a m ast er st oryt eller." - The Seattle Times Aft er an alien species, called t he Form ics, invade eart h and m illions w ere killed, t he Int ernat ional Fleet or IF, w ho are in charge of building and m aint aining a prot ect ion fleet, begin t o recruit brilliant young children and t rain t hem t o becom e t he next com m anders of t he fleet. Bean, w ho is t he m ain charact er, is recruit ed by t he IF, and is t aken t o bat t le school, w here he w ill be t rained. In bat t le school, Bean discovers a fellow t rainee, Ender Wiggin. Bean decides t hat he w ant s t o be Ender?s m ost t rust ed, m ost fait hful ally. They becom e close friends, and m aint ain t hat friendship as t hey advance t o com m and school, and event ually, t o bat t le t he Form ics.
Anonym ous Dialogue Int roduct ion What 's t his elem ent??so... w hat do you think he?s doing???analyzing us.??gat hering inform at ion w it hout giving any. Do you really t hink he?s t hat sophist icat ed???he st ayed alive on t he st reet.??i t hink it?s t im e for you t o probe a lit t le.??and let him know t hat his ret icence bot hers us???if he?s as clever as you t hink, he already know s.? (125) Orson Scot t Card includes bit s of dialogue bet w een unknow n charact ers at t he beginning of each chapt er. These bit s oft en give an out side look on Bean and his act ions. Som et im es t hey m ight preview t he follow ing chapt er, but m ost of t he t im e are just opinions of t he aut horit y figure in t he book. Why does it m at t er? This book is narrat ed in t hird person perspect ive, but t he narrat or is all know ing. Therefore, t he reader sees Bean?s t hought s t hroughout t he w hole book. The part s at t he beginning of each chapt er oft en include ot hers?t hought s on Bean. So t he book is not one hundred percent Bean. For exam ple, t heses pieces of dialogue oft en include conversat ions about how Bean behaves and w hat im pact t hat m ight have on ot her people and t he school as a w hole. What 's t he im pact on t he reader? Bean shares his t hought s and feelings t hroughout t he w hole book, and in t hose t hought s, Bean declares him self t o be alw ays right. Overt im e, w it hout any ot her influence, t he reader m ight begin t o feel like Bean is act ually right about everyt hing. These pieces of dialogue can help t he reader t o not get caught up in som e of t he t hings Bean t hink are t rue. These part s help t he reader t o know w hat t he act ual t rut h is, and t herefore know a lit t le bit m ore about t he sit uat ion, so t hey can begin t o see t he big pict ure.
Tw in Parallel St ory Line What 's t his elem ent? A t w in parallel st ory line occurs w hen an aut hor bounces bet w een t w o plot lines, every ot her chapt er. The aut hor uses t his ot her charact er t o t each t he reader about Bean?s past and give reason for his t rait s. This ot her charact er, Sist er Carlot t a, digs int o Bean?s past t o find out t he reason for Bean?s brilliance. PLOT LINE PLOT LINE Why does it m at t er? Only people w ho are brilliant are draft ed t o Bat t le School. Now, Bean, up t o t he point w here he joined Bat t le School, had t he highest t est scores on t he ent rance t est s. This kind of sm art ness is ext rem ely rare. Sist er Carlot t a is sent t o invest igat e and find t he reason for Bean?s brilliance. These chapt ers illust rat e w hat Sist er Carlot t a finds in her search for t his reason. This helps t o cure t he w ant for an answ er t hat m any readers m ight have obt ained t hrough t he first part of t he book. What 's t he im pact on t he reader? As w as said before, t hese chapt ers about digging int o Bean?s past t each t he reader about Bean and his origins. The reader can t hen get t o know Bean a lit t le bit m ore, or m aybe sym pat hize w it h him. The inform at ion present ed in t hese chapt ers does not really have any relevance t o t he m ain plot line, but is helpful t o underst and Bean?s hist ory and w hy he is w ho he is.
Analogies What 's t his elem ent? Aut hors oft en use analogies t o explain new subject s w it hin a book. An aut hor w ill oft en describe t he subject in t he book and t hen use an analogy t o com pare t he subject t o som et hing w e already know. Why does it m at t er? Analogies oft en help people t o underst and new concept s and t o get a grasp on som et hing som eone m ight be t eaching t hem. Since t his is a science fict ion book, m any of t he t hings need t o be explained and Card oft en uses analogies t o explain t he com plicat ed t hings t hat go on in bat t le school.?it w as a long and grueling pract ice, drilling over and over again on new skills. Bean saw t he Wiggin w asn?t w illing t o let t hem learn each t echnique separat ely. They had t o do t hem all at once, int egrat ing t hem int o sm oot h, caut ious m ovem ent s. Like dancing, Bean t hought. You don?t learn t o shoot and t hen learn t o launch and t hen learn t o do a cont rolled spin--you learn t o launch-shoot -spin." (201) What 's t he im pact on t he reader? Whenever som et hing is t aught t o som eone, t hey alw ays w ant t o underst and it, and t o m ake sense of it. Analogies are a perfect w ay t o t each som eone som et hing new. And because so m any t hings t hat Bean t alks about in t his book are new t o t he reader, analogies w ill help for t he reader t o underst and w hat is going on.
My Em ulat ion Part 1 The Next Step "They?re getting over each other, finally.??it?s taken so much time, though. They would have probably already found a way off the island if they would have worked together from the beginning.??like trying to sharpen a pen in a pencil sharpener. But I?m glad they got it figured out.??agreed. They?re making real progress now. I guess it?s on to the next step in this dreadful test.??hey, I?m actually enjoying watching them, but I hate that I can?t tell them they?re being watched. I absolutely hate it.? Riley sat up suddenly.?wha?,? she gasped in her st ill half asleep st at e. She scanned t he perim et er of t he cam p, looking for anyt hing unusual. Seeing and hearing not hing else, she laid back dow n and, upon rolling over, her eyes fell upon her part ner?s em pt y sleeping sack.?i knew I should never have t rust ed him,? she m ut t ered t o herself.?alw ays leaving w it hout t elling m e.? She had only recent ly st art ed t o t rust Orion. Aft er so long keeping as m uch dist ance bet w een herself and him, she w as only just st art ing t o get used t o his presence. She knew she couldn?t rely on her ow n m ind and st rengt h t o survive, but ever since t he incident aft er t he crash, she never t hought t hey w ould becom es allies. But it happened.?ok, now I definit ely heard som et hing,? Riley exclaim ed, jum ping out of her sack and grabbing t he sharpened st ick she keep w it h her at all t im es.?oh, sorry,? Orion said as he clam bered t hrough t he t rees and int o t heir m akeshift cam p.?couldn?t sleep, so I figured I w ould t ry and cat ch anyt hing foolish enough t o t hink t hat darkness m eans safet y.??cat ch anyt hing?? Riley asked.?nah.?
My Em ulat ion Part 2 Zero to Sixty?Do you think they might find out???depends on how much evidence they obtain about the crash.??is the crash site secured and all the evidence removed???not yet. We picked a pretty bad spot for the crash site. The ocean floor is cluttered with rough terrain. It might take a little while to clear everything out.??well get it done as fast as possible. We don?t want anybody crashing our party.??anyt hing yet?!?!?? Jack exclaim ed as t he elevat or door opened. His voice echoed across t he far w all of t he room. Dead silence.?no sir,? replied Jack?s second-in-com m and, Cindy?Let?s go. I?ve got t w o fam ilies, an airline com pany, and t he Coast Guard w ait ing for an answ er.? Cindy did not know w here t o go. The plane seem ed im possible t o find. Like t rying t o find a needle in a hayst ack t he size of an office building. It just m ade no sense. No evidence, not hing t o even suggest t hat t he plane had disappeared, except for t he fact t hat t he plane hadn?t landed at it s dest inat ion, and t he lost signal. It w as as t hough som eone w as t rying t o hide it from t hem.?oh no,? Cindy m ut t ered.
Annot at ions Elem ent #1 In using t his elem ent, I included in m y em ulat ion a shot conversat ion at t he beginning of each chapt er. This dialogue gave an out side look int o t he st ory and it?s charact ers. Through t his conversat ion, I w as able t o give a lit t le inform at ion on t he plot of t he st ory t hat I w ould ot herw ise had t o have included at t he beginning of book. I did t o give t his inform at ion subt ly, and not in a obvious w ay. I am happy w it h how t hat w orked. Elem ent #3 One of m y elem ent s is a t w in parallel st ory line. So for m y em ulat ion, I w rot e t w o, 200 w ord scene. Those different scenes had different charact ers and a different plot line, but bot h are part of t he general plot of t he w hole st ory. The individual plot lines are connect ed but not connect ed at t he sam e t im e. My t hird elem ent w as using analogies t o describe a new concept or subject. I used t he analogy of t rying t o sharpen a pen in a pencil sharpener t o describe how Orion and Riley did not get along. I also included a analogy in t he second chapt er, t o describe how t he invest igat ors felt w hen t rying t o find t he plane. Elem ent #2
