1 Resting Hill - Unit 9 GulMohar: Reader 6 More Reading Worksheet 1 This story is about an invisible man who causes confusion and the people are unable to infer as to what has happened to the stranger and the erratic movements of the things in the bedroom. Read this story and answer the questions that follow: The Invisible Man by H G Wells The Furniture That Went Mad Back at the Coach and Horses, in the early hours of Whit Monday, Mr. Hall was surprised to see the stranger's door ajar and the bolts of the front door open. He rapped at the stranger's door. There was no answer. He rapped again, pushed the door wide open and entered. It was as he expected. The room was empty. Oddly, on the bedroom chair and along the rail of the bed were scattered the clothes and the bandages of their guest. His big hat too was hanging over the bedpost. Hall went down and called out to his wife. "Janny," he said, 'e's not in 'iz room, 'e ain't. And the front door's unbolted. And what e doin is without 'is clothes? 'That s a most curious business." Mrs. Hall decided to go up and look for herself. At that time, they heard the front door open and shut but did not pay much attention. She set off first and Mr. Hall followed. Someone sneezed on the staircase. Hall, following six steps behind his wife, thought his wife had sneezed. She thought that Hall had sneezed. She flung open the bedroom door and stood staring at the room.

2 "Of all the curious!" she said. She bent forward and put her hand on the pillow and then under the clothes. "Cold," she said. "He's been up for an hour or more." Then a most extraordinary thing happened. The bed-clothes gathered together, leapt up suddenly and jumped over the bottom rail. It was exactly as if a hand had caught them and flung them aside. Then the stranger's hat hopped off the bed-post, whirled in the air and then dashed straight at Mrs. Hall's face. The sponge from the washstand came swiftly next. A chair leaped up, flinging the stranger's coat and trousers carelessly aside. Laughing drily in a voice just like the stranger's, the chair turned itself up with its four legs pointed at Mrs. Hall. It seemed to take aim at her for a moment, and charged at her. She screamed and turned. The chair legs came gently but firmly against her back and forced her and Hall out of the room. The door slammed violently and was locked. The chair and bed seemed to dance in triumph for a moment, and then abruptly everything was still. Mrs. Hall was almost fainting in Mr. Hall's arms on the landing. "Ghosts," gasped Mrs. Hall. "I know spirits. I've read in papers of em. Tables and chairs leaping and dancing..." "I might have known. With those goggling eyes and bandaged head. And all those bottles... He's put the spirits into the furniture... My good old furniture!" said Mrs. Hall. " It was in that very chair my poor dear mother used to sit when I was a little girl. To think it should attack me!" she sobbed.
