DOUGALL S 5 F SUM AND THE WZ-ALGORITHM Abstract. We show how to prove the examples of a paper by Chu ad Zhag usig the WZ-algorithm. arxiv:6.085v [math.nt] Dec 07 Keywords. Geeralized hypergeometric series; Dougall s sum; WZ-algorithm; Ramaujatype series; Evaluatio of costats. Mathematics Subject Classificatio. C0; F0; Y60. Itroductio Chu ad Zhag had the good idea of acceleratig the followig Dougall s sum [], which is coverget for Re+a b c d e > 0: b k c k d k e k +a b k +a c k +a d k +a e k a+k, usig may recurrece relatios patters. Their paper has iterestig formulas ad may ice examples. We show that the Wilf-Zeilberger algorithm ca do it automatically [], ad give four examples correspodig to Examples, 5, 50 ad 5 of that paper. Note that Dougall s sum i [] has two wrog sigs ad observe that it is symmetric i b, c, d ad e that is, these parameters are iterchageable. We will use the followig otatio: Aa,b,c,d,e,k = The Dougall s sum is If e the we have the sum where b k c k d k e k +a b k +a c k +a d k +a e k a+k. Ωa,b,c,d,e = Φa,b,c,d = Aa,b,c,d,e,k. Ba,b,c,d,k Ba,b,c,d,k = k b k c k d k a+k. +a b k +a c k +a d k This itroductio is short but the iterested reader ca also see the itroductio ad the refereces of [].
. The WZ-algorithm as a black box LetF,kbehypergeometriciadk,thatisafuctiosuchthatF+,k/F,k ad F,k +/F,k are ratioal fuctios. The, we ca use the Zeilberger s Maple package SumTools[Hypergeometric];. The output of ZeilbergerF,k,,k,N[]; is a operator ON of the followig form ON = P 0 +P N +P N + +P m N m, where P 0, P,...,P m are polyomials of, ad N is a operator which icreases iuity, thatisnf,k = F+,k. TheoutputofZeilbergerF,k,,k,N[]; gives a fuctio G,k such that ONF,k = G,k + G,k. If the operator ON is just N, the oe has F+,k F,k = G,k + G,k, adwesaythatf,gisawz-pairwilf-zeilberger. H. WilfadD.Zeilberger proved i a semial paper [] for which they received the Steele Prize, that i this case there exists a ratioal fuctio R,k the so called certificate, such that G,k = R,kF,k; relatio that is valid for all values of ad k oce we have simplified the product. Whe the operator is ot exactly N but is of degree, the is very easy to trasform the fuctio ito aother oe with output equal to N. The iterestig fact is that this is always the case for the fuctios U, k costructed from the fuctios iside the Dougall s sum i the way we show i the examples. That is, with idepedece of the recurrece patter that oe is takig, the operator has always degree equal to. WZ-pairs are gems because of their iterestig properties. For example, H. Wilf ad D. Zeilberger, summig both sides of for 0, proved that G,k + = G,k F0,k+ lim F,k, i case that the summatio is coverget. If the above limit is equal to 0, oe has G,k = F0,k+ G,k +, ad from it, we get the followig list of idetities: G,0 = F0,0+ G, = F0,+ G, = F0,+ The, from this ifiite list, we get G,0 =. G,, G,, G,, F0,k+ lim G,k,
DOUGALL S 5F SUM AND THE WZ-ALGORITHM whe both sides are coverget. If the covergece of the series is uiform the we ca go further ad commute the limit with the series.. Examples I this sectio we prove the Examples, 5, 50 ad 5 of the paper [] usig methods based o the WZ-algorithm, but we ca derive all the other examples of that paper usig the same kid of WZ-techiques. Example. It accelerates Ω,,,, = 7 ζ, see [, Theorem 5], usig the recurrece relatio [,0,,,], see [, Lemma ]. To do it with the WZ-method we cosider the fuctio U,k = A +, +0,+,+,+,k, ad use the Maple package withsumtools[hypergeometric]. We see that the output of ZeilbergerU,k,,k,N[] is equal to N This output idicates that if F,k = U,k = U,k the the output of ZeilbergerF,k,,k,N[] is equal to N Observe that 0/78 = 6/. Hece, there is a fuctio G,k, such that F,G is a WZpair. Writig simplifyzeilbergerf,k,,k,n[]/f,k we get a ratioal fuctio R,k such that G,k = R,kF,k. I additio, we see that R,0 = , U,0 = +. As the limit of F,k as is equal to 0, we ca use the idetity : G,0 = F0,k+ lim G,k. We ca easily check that i this example the limit commutes with the summatio ad is equal to zero. Therefore, we have G,0 = F0,k = Ω,,,, = 7 ζ. Hece 6 G,0 = which is the formula of [, Example ]. 5, = 6ζ,
Example 5. This example uses the same recurrece relatio, that is [,0,,,], see [, Lemma ] ad our fial remark. We cosider the fuctio U,k = A +, +0, +, +, +,k. The, proceedig as i the previous example, we obtai F,k = U,k 6, 5 ad the ratioal fuctio R,k such that G,k = R,kF,k. I additio, we get We see that F0,k = R,0 = , U,0 = Therefore, see : G,0 = { 0 A,,,, },k = 0, ad Ω,,,, =. F0,k+ lim G,k = lim G,k, ad we ca check that the limit commutes with the summatio, ad i additio the limit of G,k as k is zero for 0. Hece k k + k + G,0 = lim G0,k = lim = k k + k + π. That is = 6 5 π, which is the formula of [, Example 5]. We will fially deduce that this example accelerates Ω,,, 5, 5. For it observe that if F,k,G,k is a WZ-pair the F+,k,G+,k is also a WZ-pair. Hece G+,0 = F,k+ lim G+,k. As the above limit is equal to zero, we obtai π = G,0 = G0,0+ G+,0 = G0,0+ = Ω,,, 5, 5, ad from it, we deduce that 7 Ω,,, 5, 5 = 6 0 9π, F,k
DOUGALL S 5F SUM AND THE WZ-ALGORITHM 5 which is a kow result because Maple also gives the exact value of this Dougall s sum. Example 50. It accelerates Φ,,, = G Catala costat, see [, Theorem 5], usig the recurrece relatio [,0,,], see [, Lemma ]. To do it with the WZ-method we cosider the fuctio U,k = B +, +0,+,+,k, The, with the Wilf-Zeilberger s algorithm, we obtai F,k = U,k = 6 U,k , ad the ratioal fuctio R,k such that G,k = R,kF,k. I additio, we get R,0 = + 5+6, U,0 = +, ad, see : G,0 = F0,k = Φ,,, = G. Hece 0 G,0 = which is the formula i [, Example 50] = 0G, Example 5. This example uses the recurrece relatio [,,,,], see [, Lemma 5]. From the fuctio U,k = A +, +, +, +,,k, we obtai F,k = U,k 5, 6 ad the ratioal fuctio R,k such that G,k = R,kF,k. I additio, we get R,0 = , U,0 = +, ad, see : G0,k = k k The, we use the Wilf-Zeilberger s idetity : G,k + = k + k +. G,k F0,k+ lim F,k. ButF0,kadthelimitofF,kas areequaltozeroithisexample. Therefore, we have G,k + = G,k.
6 I additio, we ca prove that Carlso s Theorem holds here. Hece G,k = costat k C. To determie the costat, we write G,k = lim G,k = lim G0,k = k k π, because the limit commutes with the summatio ad is equal to 0 whe 0. Hece G,0 = = 8 6 π, which is the formula [, Example 5]. Remark. Some of the examples i [], like the Example 5, have +a b c d e 0, ad the Ωa,b,c,d,e is ot defied. Hece the left had side of the formulas i the theorems of [] has o sese i these cases ad variats of the theorems would be eeded. I this paper we have show that the Wilf-Zeilberger s techiques ca maage all the situatios. Refereces [] Chu, W., Zhag, W.: Acceleratig Dougall s 5 F -sum ad ifiite series ivolvig π, Math.
