EISENSTEIN S CRITERION, FERMAT S LAST THEOREM, AND A CONJECTURE ON POWERFUL NUMBERS arxiv: v6 [math.ho] 13 Feb 218 PIETRO PAPARELLA Abstract. Give itegers l > m >, moic polyomials X, Y, ad Z are give with the property that the complex umber µ is a zero of X if ad oly if the triple (µ,µ + m,µ + l) satisfies x + y = z. It is show that the irreducibility of these polyomials implies Fermat s last theorem. It is also demostrated, i a precise asymptotic sese, that for a majority of cases, these polyomials are irreducible via applicatio of Eisestei s criterio. We coclude by offerig a cojecture o powerful umbers. 1. Itroductio I its origial form, Fermat s last theorem (FLT) asserts that there are o positive solutios to the Diophatie equatio (1) x +y = z if > 2. As is well-ow, Wiles [8], with the assistace of Taylor [7], gave the first complete proof of FLT. Give itegers l > m >, we cosider moic polyomials X, Y, ad Z with the property that µ is a zero of X if ad oly if (µ,µ + m,µ + l) satisfies (1). It is show, i a precise asymptotic sese, that for a vast majority of cases, these polyomials are irreducible via direct applicatio of Eisestei s criterio. Although the results fall far short of costitutig a full proof of FLT i fact, the possibility is left ope that there are ifiitely-may cases to cosider they are evertheless appealig give that: (i) they are elemetary i ature; (ii) they apply to all values of (icludig = 2); ad (iii) they apply to the well-ow first-case ad secod-case of (1). A Goldbach-type cojecture o powerful umbers is also offered. (2) (3) ad For fixed itegers l > m >, let 2. The Auxiliary Polyomials X (t) = X (t,(l,m)) := t Y (t) = Y (t,(l,m)) := t + (4) Z (t) = Z (t,(l,m)) := t + t (l m)q (l,m), ( 1) t lq (m,m l), =1 =1 ( 1) t ( l +(l m) ), =1 1
2 P. PAPARELLA where (5) Q (l,m) := l m 1 l m = l 1 i m i, = 1,...,. i= Propositio 1. If µ C, the (µ,µ +m,µ +l) C 3 satisfies (1) if ad oly if X (µ) = Y (µ+m) = Z (µ+l) =. Proof. Followig the biomial theorem, otice that If ν := µ+m, the If ξ := µ+l, the µ +(µ+m) = (µ+l) µ µ (l m ) = =1 µ µ (l m)q (l,m) = =1 X (µ) =. (ν m) +ν = (ν +(l m)) ν + ν ( ( m) (l m) ) = =1 ν + ( 1) ν ( m ( 1) (l m) ) = =1 ν + ( 1) ν ( m (m l) ) = =1 ν + ( 1) ν lq (m,m l) =1 Y (ν) = Y (µ+m) =. (ξ l) +(ξ +(m l)) = ξ ξ + ξ ( ( l) +(m l) ) = =1 ξ + ( 1) ξ ( l +( 1) (m l) ) = =1 ξ + ( 1) ξ ( l +(l m) ) = =1 Z (ξ) = Z (µ+l) =, ad the result is established. It ca be show that if (x,y,z) N 3 satisfies (1), with x < y < z, gcd(x,y,z) = 1, ad (l,m) := (z x,y x), the gcd(l,m) = 1 [6, p 2]. Herei it is assumed that gcd(l,m) = 1.
EC, FLT, AND POWERFUL NUMBERS 3 Recall that a polyomial f with coefficiets from Z is called reducible (over Z) if f = gh, where g ad h are polyomials of positive degree with coefficiets from Z. If f is ot reducible, the f is called irreducible (over Z). Propositio 2. The polyomials X, Y, ad Z are simultaeously irreducible or reducible. Proof. Followig Propositio 1, otice that X (µ m) = (µ m) +µ = (µ m+l) (µ m) +µ = (µ+l m) Y (µ) =. Thus, X (t m) = (t µ) = Y (t). {µ C Y (µ)=} A similar argumet demostrates that X (t l) = Z (t). Thus, the polyomials X, Y, ad Z are simultaeously irreducible or reducible. Give (6) f(t) = t let (7) f (t) := t a i t i C[t], i=1 a i t i,, i=1 where the sum o the right is defied to be zero wheever it is empty. Notice that f = f, f(t) = tf 1 (t) a, ad (f j ) = f, j. Lemma 3. If f is the polyomial defied i (6), f is the polyomial defied i (7), ad r C, the 1 f(t) = (t r) f (r)t 1 +f(r). = Proof. Proceed by iductio o. If = 1, the f(t) = t a 1 = t r+r a 1 = (t r)+f(r), ad the base-case is established.
4 P. PAPARELLA Assume that the result holds for every polyomial of degree j, where j 1. If f(t) = t j+1 j+1 i=1 a it j+1 i, ad r C, the f(t) = tf j (t) a j+1 ( ) j 1 = t (t r) (f j ) (r)t j 1 +f j (r) = = j 1 = (t r) f (r)t j +tf j (r) a j+1 = a j+1 j 1 = (t r) f (r)t j +(t r)f j (r)+rf j (r) a j+1 = (t r) j f (r)t j +f(r), = establishigthe resultwhe = j+1. Theetireresultowfollowsbythe priciple of mathematical iductio. Remar 4. If f(t) = t i=1 a it i Z[t] ad r Z is a zero, the, followig Lemma 3, 1 f(t) = (t r) f (r)t 1, i.e., f is reducible over Z. = The coectio to FLT is ow apparet from the followig result. Corollary 5. If (x,x + m,x + l) N 3 satisfies (1), the X, Y, ad Z are reducible. Remar 6. Corollary 5 provides a direct method of provig FLT; ideed, if it ca be show that ay of the polyomials X, Y, or Z is irreducible, the there is o solutio to (1) of the form (x,x+m,x+l) N Mai Results The followig result is the most well-ow irreducibility test (see, e.g., Prasolov [5, Theorem 2.1.3]) ad follows from a result due to Schöema (Cox [1]). Theorem 7 (Eisestei s criterio). Let f(t) = = a t Z[t]. If there is a prime umber p such that: (1) p a ; (2) p a, = 1,...,; ad (3) p 2 a, the f is irreducible over Z. With f ad p as i Theorem 7, let { 1, (i), (ii), ad (iii) are satisfied; Eis(f,p) :=, otherwise.
EC, FLT, AND POWERFUL NUMBERS 5 The followig result is well-ow i the literature o FLT (see Ribeboim [6, (3B)(5), p. 81] ad refereces therei). For completeess, we iclude a proof that depeds oly o the defiitio of the polyomial Q i (5). Lemma 8. Let > 1 ad p be a prime. If gcd(l,m) = 1, p, ad p (l m), the p Q (l,m). Proof. If p l m, the there is a iteger j such that l = m+pj. Thus, Q (l,m) = (m+pj) m pj ( ( ) = )m p j m /pj = = m p 1 j 1 =1 = m 1 + m p 1 j 1 =2 = m 1 + m 1 p j, +1 ad Q (l,m) (m 1 ) (mod p). =1 If is a iteger ad p is a prime, the we say that is sigly divisible by p, deoted by p, wheever p, but p 2. A iteger that is sigly divisible by two is called sigly eve. Theorem 9. Let X be defied as i (2). If there is a prime p such that p l m ad p, the X is irreducible. Proof. Immediate i view of (2), Theorem 7, ad Lemma 8. Remar 1. The import of Theorem 9 is amplified by the followig observatio: a positive iteger a is called powerful if p 2 divides a for every prime p that divides a; otherwise, it is called opowerful. Golomb [2] proved that if κ(t) deotes the umber of powerful umbers i the iterval [1, t], the (8) ct 1/2 3t 1/3 κ(t) ct 1/2, where c := ζ(3/2)/ζ(3) ad ζ deotes the Riema zeta fuctio (Micu ad Paaitopol [3] give a improvemet of (8)). Cosequetly, κ(t)/t as t. If (t) := {δ = l m N 1 m < l t, δ powerful, gcd(l,m) = 1}, the (t) = κ(t). Thus, (t) /t as t. I case l m is powerful, we offer the followig results. Theorem 11. Let Y be defied as i (3). If there is a prime p such that p l ad p, the Y is irreducible. Proof. Immediate i view of (3), Theorem 7, ad Lemma 8.
6 P. PAPARELLA Theorem 12. Let Z be defied as i (4). If 2ℓ m is sigly eve, the Z is irreducible. Proof. If 2ℓ m is sigly eve, the ℓ is odd, m is eve, ad there is a odd iteger q such that 2ℓ m = 2q. As a cosequece, m = 2(ℓ q) (mod 4). As ℓ ad ℓ m are odd, otice that ℓ + (ℓ m) (mod 2), = 1,...,. Moreover, sice ℓ + (ℓ m) = 2ℓ + X ℓ m ( 1) =1 it follows that (ℓ + (ℓ m) ) 2ℓ 6 (mod 4), i.e., Eis(Z, 2) = 1. Example 13. If (ℓ, m) = (9, 4), 2, 6 (mod 5), the Eis(X, 5) = 1; otherwise, if (mod 5), the Eis(Z, 2) = 1 sice 2(9) 4 = 14 is sigly eve. Example 14. For every positive iteger, let P () := {(ℓ, m) R2 m < ℓ, gcd (ℓ, m) = 1}. Figure 1 depicts the set P (5) (please ote the uorthodox positio of the positive quadrat). Let p be a prime less tha 5. If p ℓ m, the X (t) is irreducible for every positive iteger satisfyig 5, i.e., there is o solutio to x + y = z of the form (x, x + m, x + ℓ) N3. Figure 2 cotais the remaiig elemets of P (5) that ca ot be elimiated i this maer (i.e., followig Theorem 9). Figure 3 cotais all pairs that ca ot be elimiated from Theorems 9 ad 11. Fially, Figure 4 cotais all elemets that ca ot be elimiated from Theorems 9, 11, ad z = Figure 1. The set P (5). Note that z stads for ozero.
EC, FLT, AND POWERFUL NUMBERS z = 6256 Figure 2. Remaiig pairs after Theorem 9 applied z = 311 Figure 3. Remaiig pairs after Theorems 9 ad 11 are applied.
8 P. PAPARELLA z = 264 Figure 4. Remaiig pairs after Theorems 9, 11, ad 12 are applied. Example 15. If (l,m) = (9,5), the the irreducibility of the auxiliary polyomials caot be asserted from the previous results. As metioed i the itroductio, the above results leave the possibility that there are ifiitely-may cases to resolve. The followig cojecture, which geeralizes Example 15, would ot oly establish this, but is seemigly of great import i ad of itself ad could be as difficult to resolve as the Goldbach cojecture ([4]). Cojecture 16. If a > 1 is powerful, the there is a prime p ad a powerful umber b such that a = b+p. Refereces 1. David A.
