A DIGITAL BINOMIAL THEOREM HIEU D. NGUYEN arxiv:42.38v [math.nt] 0 Dec 204 Abstract. We preset a triagle of coectios betwee the Sierpisi triagle, the sum-of-digits fuctio, ad the Biomial Theorem via a oe-parameter family of Sierpisi matrices, which ecodes a digital versio of the Biomial Theorem.. Itroductio It is well ow that Sierpisi s triagle ca be obtaied from Pascal s triagle by evaluatig its etries, ow as biomial coefficiets, mod 2: Pascal s triagle mod Sierpisi s triagle Pascla s triagle is, of course, costructed by isertig the biomial coefficiet ( i the -th positio of the -th row, where the first row ad first elemet i each row correspod to 0 ad 0, respectively. Biomial coefficiets have a distiguished history ad appear i the much-celebrated Biomial Theorem: Theorem (Biomial Theorem. (x+y where ( are defied i terms of factorials:( ( ( x y, N, (2!!(!. I this article, we demostrate how the Biomial Theorem i tur arises from a oe-parameter geeralizatio of the Sierpisi triagle. The coectio betwee them is give by the sum-of-digits fuctio, s(, defiedasthesumofthedigitsithebiaryrepresetatioof (see[]. Forexample, s(3 s( Towards this ed, we begi with a well-ow matrix formulatio of Sierpisi s triagle that demostrates its fractal ature (see [5], p.246. Defie a sequece of matrices S of size 2 2 recursively by ( 0 S (3 ad S + S S (4 Date: Mathematics Subject Classificatio. Primary. Key words ad phrases. Biomial theorem, Sierpisi triagle, sum-of-digits.
for >. Here, the operatio deotes the Kroecer product of two matrices. For example, S 2 ad S 3 ca be computed as follows: ( S 0 S S 2 S S 0 0 S S 0 0 S 3 S S 2 ( S2 0 S 2 S 2 S Thus, i the limit we obtai Sierpisi s matrix S lim S. Less well-ow is a oe-parameter geeralizatio of Sierpisi s triagle i terms of the sum-of-digits fuctio due to Calla [3]. If we defie ( 0 S (x (5 x ad for >, the S(x : lim S (x S + (x S (x S (x (6 x x 0 x 2 x x x x 2 x 0 0 x x 2 0 x 0 x 0 x 3 x 2 x 2 x x 2 x x Observe that S ( S ad S( S. The matrix S(x appears i [3] where Calla defies its etries i terms of the sum-of-digits fuctio s(. I particular, if we deote S(x (s j, ad assume the idices j, to be o-egative with (j,l (0,0 correspodig to the top left-most etry, the the etries s j, are defied by { x s j, s(j, if 0 j ad (,j is carry-free, (8 0, otherwise where the otio of carry-free is defied as follows: call a pair of o-egative itegers (a, b carry-free if their sum a+b ivolves o carries whe the additio is performed i biary. For example, the pair (8,2 is carry-free sice 8+2 ( ( 2 0 ivolves o carries i biary. To see why (8 correctly describes (7, we argue by iductio. Clearly, S (x satisfies (8. Next, assume that S (x satisfies (8. It suffices to show that every etry s j, of S + (x satisfies (8. To prove this, we divide S + (x, whose size is , ito four sub-matrices A,B,C,D, each of size 2 2, based o the recurrece S + (x ( S (x 0 xs (x S (x ( A B C D where A D S (x, B 0, ad C xs (x. We ow cosider four cases depedig o which sub-matrix the elemet s j, belogs to.,... (7 2
Case : 0 j, 2. The s j, lies i A S (x ad thus (8 clearly holds. Case 2: 0 j 2, The s j, lies i B 0, which implies s j, 0, ad thus (8 holds sice j. Case 3: 2 j, 2 +. The s j, lies i D S (x. Let j j j 2, deote their biary expasios. Observe that j. Defie j j 2 ad 2 where we delete the digit j from j (resp. from. The it is clear that (,j beig carry-free is equivalet to (,j beig carry-free. Moreover, s(j s(j. We coclude that satisfies (8. s j, s j, xs(j x s(j Case 4: 2 j 2 +, 0 2. The s j, lies i C xs (x. Defie j j 2 ad. The agai (,j beig carry-free is equivalet to (,j beig carry-free. Also, s(j s(2 +j +s(j. Hece, satisfies (8 as well. This complete the proof. s j, xs j, x+s(j x s(j Calla also proved i the same paper that S(x geerates a oe-parameter group, i.e., it satisfies the followig additive property uder matrix multiplicatio: S(xS(y S(x+y (9 We will see that this property ecodes a digital versio of the Biomial Theorem. For example, equatig the (3,0-etry of S(x+y, i.e. s 3,0, with the correspodig etry of S(xS(y yields the idetity (x+y s(3 x s(3 y s(0 +x s(2 y s( +x s( y s(2 +x s(0 y s(3, (0 which simplifies to the Biomial Theorem for 2: (x+y 2 x 2 +2xy +y 2. ( The idetities correspodig to the (5,0 ad (7,0-etries of S(x+y are ad (x+y s(5 x s(5 y s(0 +x s(4 y s( +x s( y s(4 +x s(5 y s(0 (2 (x+y s(7 x s(7 y s(0 +x s(6 y s( +x s(5 y s(2 +x s(4 y s(3 (3 +x s(3 y s(4 +x s(2 y s(5 +x s( y s(6 +x s(2 y s(, respectively. Observe that (2 is equivalet to (0 while (3 simplifies to the Biomial Theorem for 3. More geerally, property (9 ca be restated as a digital versio of the Biomial Theorem: Theorem 2 (Digital Biomial Theorem. Let m N. The (x+y s(m 0 m (,m carry-free x s( y s(m. (4 We ote that (26 appears implicitly i Calla s proof of (9. The rest of this article is devoted to provig Theorem 2 idepedetly of (9 ad demostratig that it is equivalet to the Biomial Theorem whe m 2. 3
2. Proof of the Digital Biomial Theorem There are may ow proofs of the Biomial Theorem. The stadard combiatorial proof relies o eumeratig -elemet permutatios that cotai the symbols x ad y ad the coutig those permutatios that cotai copies of x. For example, the expasio (x+y 2 xx+xy +yx+yy (5 gives all 2-elemet permutatios that cotai x ad y. The the umber of permutatios that cotai copies of x is give by ( 2. Thus, (5 correspods to (2 with 2: ( ( ( (x+y 2 x 2 + xy + y 2. (6 0 2 To establish that (6 is equivalet to (0, we cosider the followig digital biomial expasio: give two sets of digits, S 0 {x 0,y 0 } ad S {x,y }, we ca represetall ways ofcostructig a 2-digit umber z 0 z, where z 0 S 0 ad z S, by the expasio which we rewrite as (x 0 +y 0 (x +y x 0 x +x 0 y +y 0 x +y 0 y, (7 (x 0 +y 0 (x +y (x 0 x (y0 0 y0 +(x 0 x0 (y0 0 y +(x0 0 x (y 0 y0 +(x0 0 x0 y 0 y. (8 If we ow assume that x 0 x x ad y 0 y y, the each term o the right-had side of (8 has the form x d0 0 xd y d0 0 y d x s( y s(3, where d d 2 ad 3 ( d ( d 2. It follows that (8 reduces to (0. O the other had, (7 reduces to (5. Thus, we have show that Theorem 2 for m 3 is equivalet to the Biomial Theorem for 2. To exted the proof to itegers of the form m 2, we cosider sets of digits, S {x,y }, where 0,,,. The expasio (x +y z S,,, z 0 z d {0,},,, x d0 0 xd y d0 0 y d (9 represets all ways of costructig a -digit umber z z 0 z z with z S for 0,,,. The substitutig x x ad y y for all such ito (9 yields (x+y x d0++d y (d0++d, (20 or equivaletly, d 0,,d {0,} (x+y s(2 2 where if we defie d d 2, the s( d 0 ++d ad x s( y s(2, (2 s(2 s(2 s( (d 0 ++d. Moreover, rages from 0 to 2 sice d 0,,d {0,}. This justifies Theorem. O the other had, give betwee 0 ad, the umber of permutatios (d 0,,d cotaiig s is equal to (. Thus, (20 reduces to (2. This proves that Theorem is equivalet to the Biomial Theorem. To complete the proof of Theorem for ay o-egative iteger m, we first expad m i biary: m m i0 2 i0 ++m i 2 i, whereweoly recordits sdigitssothat m i forall 0,,. The s(m m i0 + +m i. Just as before, we use the expasio (9 to derive (20, but this time we rewrite (20 as (x+y s(m x s( y s(m, (22 0 m (,m carry-free 4
where we defie d 0 2 i0 ++d 2 i. (23 The s( d 0 ++d ad sice m i for all 0,,, we have It follows that m (m i0 2 i0 ++m i 2 i (d 0 2 i0 ++d 2 i ( d 0 2 i0 ++( d 2 i. s(m ( d 0 ++( d (d 0 ++d. Moreover, it is clear that 0 m ad (,m is carry-free. Coversely, every o-egative iteger with (,m carry-free must have represetatio i the form (23; otherwise, the sum +(m requires a carry i ay o-zero digit of where the correspodig digit of m i the same positio is zero. Thus, Theorem holds for ay o-egative iteger m. To complete our story we explai why Sierpisi s triagle appears i the reductio of Pascal s triagle s mod 2 by relatig biomial coefficiets with the sum-of-digits fuctio. Defie the carry fuctio c(, to be the umber of carries eeded to add ad i biary. A theorem of Kummer s (see [4] tells us that the p-adic valuatio of biomial coefficiets is give by the carry fuctio. Theorem 3 (Kummer. Let p be a prime iteger. The the largest power of p that divides ( equals c(,. Kummer s theorem ow explais the locatio of 0 s ad s i Sierpisi s triagle, assumig that its etries are defied by ( s, mod 2. (24 Let p 2. If (, is carry free, the c(,0 ad therefore the largest power of 2 dividig ( is 2 0. I other words, ( is odd ad hece, s, 0. O the other had, if (, is ot carry-free, the c(, ad so the largest power of 2 dividig ( ( is at least. Therefore, is eve ad hece, s j, 0. This proves that defiitio (24 for Sierpisi s triagle is equivalet to defiitio (8 i terms of carry-free pairs with x. Lastly, it is ow that the failure of the sum-of-digits fuctio to be additive is characterized by the carry fuctio. I particular, we have (see [2] s(+s( s( c(, (25 It follows that (, is carry-free if ad oly if s(+s( s(. Thus, it is fittig that the Digital Biomial Theorem ca be restated purely i terms of the additivity of the sum-of-digits fuctio: (x+y s(m x s( y s(m. (26 0 m s(+s(m s(m Refereces [] J.-P.
