The umber of direct-sum decompositios of a fiite vector space arxiv: v [math.co] 23 Mar 206 David Ellerma Uiversity of Califoria at Riverside August 3, 208 Abstract The theory of q-aalogs develops may combiatorial formulas for fiite vector spaces over a fiite field with q elemets all i aalogy with formulas for fiite sets (which are the special case of q =. A direct-sum decompositio of a fiite vector space is the vector space aalogue of a set partitio. This paper uses elemetary methods to develop the formulas for the umber of direct-sum decompositios that are the q-aalogs of the formulas for: ( the umber of set partitios with a give umber partitio sigature; (2 the umber of set partitios of a -elemet set with m blocks (the Stirlig umbers of the secod kid; ad (3 for the total umber of set partitios of a -elemet set (the Bell umbers. The atural umber is replaced by: [] q = q q = + q + q q so as q, the [] q i the passage from vector spaces to sets. The factorial! is replaced, i the q-aalog [] q! = [] q [ ] q... [] q where [] q = [0] q =. To obtai the Gaussia biomial coefficiets we calculate with ordered bases of a k-dimesioal subspace of a -dimesioal vector space over the fiite field GF (q with q elemets. There are q
elemets i the space so the first choice for a basis vector has (q (excludig 0 possibilities, ad sice that vector geerated a subspace of dimesio q, the choice of the secod basis vector is limited to (q q elemets, ad so forth. Thus: (q (q q ( q q 2... ( q q k = (q q ( q q 2 ( q...q k ( q k+ = [ k] q! q( (k = [ k] q! qk(k /2. Number of ordered bases for a k-dimesioal subspace i a -dimesioal space. But for a space of dimesio k, the umber of ordered bases are: ( q k ( q k q ( q k q 2... ( q k q k = ( q k q ( q k q 2 ( q k...q k ( q k k+ = [k] q!q k(k /2 Number of ordered bases for a k-dimesioal space. Thus the umber of subspaces of dimesio k is the ratio: ( kq = q k(k /2 [ k] q![k] q!q k(k /2 = [ k] q![k] q! Gaussia biomial coefficiet where ( k q ( k as q, i.e., the umber of k-dimesioal subspaces umber of k-elemet subsets. May classical idetities for biomial coefficiets geeralize to Gaussia biomial coefficiets [5]. 2 Coutig partitios of fiite sets ad vector spaces 2. The direct formulas for coutig partitios of fiite sets Usig sophisticated techiques, the direct-sum decompositios of a fiite vector space over GF (q have bee eumerated i the sese of givig the expoetial geeratig fuctio for the umbers ([2]; [8]. Our goal is to derive by elemetary methods the formulas to eumerate these ad some related direct-sum decompositios. Two subspaces of a vector space are said to be disjoit if their itersectio is the zero subspace 0. A direct-sum decompositio (DSD of a fiite-dimesioal vector space V over a base field F is a set of (ozero pair-wise disjoit subspaces, called blocks (as with partitios, {V i } i=,...,m that spa the space. The each vector v V has a uique expressio v = m i= v i with each v i V i. Sice a direct-sum decompositio ca be see as the vector-space versio of a set partitio, we begi with coutig the umber of partitios o a set. Each set partitio {B,..., B m } of a -elemet set has a type or sigature umber partitio givig the cardiality of the blocks where they might be preseted i odecreasig order which we ca assume to be: ( B, B 2,..., B m which is a umber partitio of. For our purposes, there is aother way to preset umber partitios, the part-cout represetatio, where a k is the umber of times the iteger k occurs i the umber partitio (ad a k = 0 if k does ot appear so that: a + a a = k= a kk =. Part-cout represetatio of umber partitios keepig track of repetitios. Each set partitio {B,..., B m } of a -elemet set has a part-cout sigature a,..., a, ad the there is a classical formula for the umber of partitios with that sigature ([, p. 25]; [6, p. 427]. 2
Propositio The umber of set partitios for the give sigature: a,..., a where k= a kk = is:! a!a 2!...a!(! a (2! a 2...(! a.. Proof: Suppose we cout the umber of set partitios {B,..., B m } of a -elemet set whe the blocks have the give cardialities: j = B j for j =,..., m so m j= j =. The first block B ca be chose i ( ( ways, the secod block i 2 ways ad so forth, so the total umber of ways is: ( ( ( m m =!! = = (!... m! (!!(! 2!( 2!,..., m... (... m! m!(... m! the multiomial coefficiet. This formula ca the be restated i terms of the part-cout sigature a,..., a where k= a! kk = as: (! a (2! a 2...(!. But that overcouts sice the a a k blocks of size k ca be permuted without chagig the partitio s sigature so oe eeds to divide by a k! for k =,..., which yields the formula for the umber of partitios with that sigature. The Stirlig umbers S (, m of the secod kid are the umber of partitios of a -elemet set with m blocks. Sice k= a k = m is the umber of blocks, the direct formula (as opposed to a recurrece formula is: S (, m = a +2a a = a +a a =m! a!a 2!...a!(! a (2! a 2...(! a Direct formula for Stirlig umbers of the secod kid. The Bell umbers B ( are the total umber of partitios o a -elemet set so the direct formula is: B ( = m= S (, m =! a!a 2!...a!(! a (2! a 2...(! a a +2a a = Direct formula for total umber of partitios of a -elemet set. 2.2 The direct formulas for coutig DSDs of fiite vector spaces Each DSD π = {V i } i=,...,m of a fiite vector space of dimesio also determies a umber partitio of usig the dimesios i = dim (V i i place of the set cardialities, ad thus each DSD also has a sigature a,..., a where the subspaces are ordered by odecreasig dimesio ad where k= a kk = ad k= a k = m. Propositio 2 The umber of DSDs of a vector space V of dimesio over GF (q with the part-cout sigature a,..., a is: k a kk 2 a!a 2!...a! q 2( 2 ([] q! a...([] q! a Number of DSDs for the give sigature a,..., a where k= a kk =. Proof: Reasoig first i terms of the dimesios i, we calculate the umber of ordered bases i a subspace of dimesio of a vector space of dimesio over the fiite field GF (q with q elemets. There are q elemets i the space so the first choice for a basis vector is (q (excludig 0, ad sice that vector geerated a subspace of dimesio q, the choice of the secod basis vector is limited to (q q elemets, ad so forth. Thus: 3
(q (q q ( q q 2... ( q q = (q q ( q q 2 ( q...q ( q + = (q ( q... ( q q ( ( Number of ordered bases for a -dimesioal subspace of a -dimesioal space. If we the divide by the umber of ordered bases for a -dimesio space: (q (q q... ( q q = (q ( q... (q q ( ( we could cacel the q ( terms to obtai the Gaussia biomial coefficiet (q (q...(q q ( ( = ( = (q (q...(q q ( ( q [ ] q![ ] q! Number of differet -dimesioal subspaces of a -dimesioal space. If istead we cotiue to develop the umerator by multiplyig by the umber of ordered bases for a 2 -dimesioal space that could be chose from the remaiig space of dimesio to obtai: (q (q q ( q q 2... ( q q (q q ( q q +... ( q q +2 = (q ( q... ( q 2+ q ( (+2. The dividig by the umber of ordered bases of a -dimesioal space times the umber of ordered bases of a 2 -dimesioal space gives the umber of differet disjoit (i.e., oly overlap is zero subspace subspaces of -dimesioal ad 2 -dimesioal subspaces. = (q (q...(q 2 + q ( ( + 2 (q (q...(q q ( ( (q 2 (q 2...(q q ( 2. Cotiuig i this fashio we arrive at the umber of disjoit subspaces of dimesios, 2,..., m where m i= i = : (q (q...(q q ( ( (q i (q i...(q q ( ( i = ( /2 q [ ] q!q ( /2... [ m] q!q m(m /2 i=,...,m = [ ] q!...[ m] q! q 2[( m i= i(i ]. There may be a umber a k of subspaces with the same dimesio, e.g., if j = j+ = k, the a k = 2 so the term [ j ] q!q j(j /2 [ j+ ] q!q j+(j+ /2 i the deomiator could be replaced by ( [k] q! ak q a k k(k /2. Hece the previous result could be rewritte i the part-cout represetatio: q 2[( ([] q! a...([] q! a k a kk(k ]. Ad permutig subspaces of the same dimesio k yields a DSD with the same sigature, so we eed to divide by a k! to obtai the formula: q 2[( a!...a!([] q! a...([] q! a k a kk(k ]. The expoet o the q term ca be simplified sice k a kk = : 2 [ ( ( k a [ kk (k ] = 2 2 ( k a kk 2 k a kk ] [ = 2 2 ( k a kk 2 ] ( = 2 2 k a kk 2. 4
This yields the fial formula for the umber of DSDs with the part-cout sigature a,..., a : q 2( 2 a!...a!([] q! a...([] q! a k a kk 2. Note that the formula is ot obtaied by a simple substitutio of [k] q! for k! i the set partitio formula due to the extra term q 2( 2 k a kk 2, but that it still reduces to the classical formula for set partitios with that sigature as q. This formula leads directly to the vector space versio of the Stirlig umbers of the secod kid to cout the DSDs with m parts ad to the vector space versio of the Bell umbers to cout the total umber of DSDs. Before givig those formulas, it should be oted that there is aother q-aalog formula called geeralized Stirlig umbers (of the secod kid but it geeralizes oly oe of the recurrece formulas for S (, m. It does ot geeralize the iterpretatio umber of set partitios o a - elemet set with m parts to cout the vector space partitios (DSDs of fiite vector spaces of dimesio with m parts. The Stirlig umbers satisfy the recurrece formula: S ( +, m = ms (, m + S (, m with S (0, m = δ 0m. Doald Kuth uses the braces otatio for the Stirlig umbers, { m} = S (, m, ad the he defies the geeralized Stirlig umber [6, p. 436] { } m by the q-aalog recurrece relatio: q { + m }q = ( + q q m { m }q + { m }q ; { } 0 m = δ q 0m. It is easy to geeralize the direct formula for the Stirlig umbers ad it geeralizes the partitio iterpretatio: D q (, m = a +2a a = a +a a =m a!...a!([] q! a...([] q! a q 2( 2 k a kk 2 Number of DSDs of a fiite vector space of dimesio over GF (q with m parts. The umber D q (, m is S m i [8]. Takig q yields the Stirlig umbers of the secod kid, i.e., D (, m = S (, m. Kuth s geeralized Stirlig umbers { } m ad D q q (, m start off the same, e.g., { 0 0 }q = = D q (0, 0 ad { } = = D q q (,, but the quickly diverge. For istace, all { } = for all, whereas the special case of D q q(, is the umber of DSDs of -dimesioal subspaces i a fiite vector space of dimesio over GF (q (see table below for q = 2. The formula D q (, is M ( i [9, Example 5.5.2(b, pp. 45-6] or [8, Example 2.2, p. 75.]. The umber D q (, of DSDs of -dimesioal subspaces is closely related to the umber of basis sets. The old formula for that umber of bases is [7, p. 7]:! (q (q q... ( q q =! (q ( q...(q q ( ( =! q( 2 (q sice [k] q = qk q = + q + q q k for k =,...,. I the formula for D q (,, there is oly oe sigature a = ad a k = 0 for k = 2,..., which immediately gives the formula for the umber of DSDs with -dimesioal blocks ad each -dimesioal block has q choices for a basis vector so the total umber of sets of basis vectors is give by the same formula: D q (, (q = a! q 2( 2 a 2 (q =! q( 2 (q. 5
Note that for q = 2, (q = so D 2 (, is the umber of differet basis sets. Summig the D q (, m for all m gives the vector space versio of the Bell umbers B (: D q ( = m= D [] q (, m = q! a!a 2!...a! q 2( 2 a ([] +2a a = q! a...([] q! a Number of DSDs of a vector space of dimesio over GF (q. k a kk 2 Our otatio D q ( is D (q i Beder ad Goldma [2] ad Q i Staley ([8], [9]. Settig q = gives the Bell umbers, i.e., D ( = B (. 2.3 Coutig DSDs with a block cotaiig a desigated vector v Set partitios have a property ot shared by vector space partitios, i.e., DSDs. Give a desigated elemet u of the uiverse set U, the elemet is cotaied i some block of every partitio o U. But give a ozero vector v i a space V, it is ot ecessarily cotaied i a block of ay give DSD of V. Some proofs of formulas use this property of set partitios so the proofs do ot geeralize to DSDs. Cosider oe of the formulas for the Stirlig umbers of the secod kid: S (, m = ( k=0 k S (k, m Summatio formula for S (, m. The proof usig the desigated-elemet u reasoig starts with the fact that ay partitio of U with U = with m blocks will have oe block cotaiig u so we the oly eed to cout the umber of m blocks o the subset disjoit from the block cotaiig u. If the block cotaiig u had k elemets, there are ( k blocks that could be complemetary to a ( k-elemet block cotaiig u ad each of those k-elemet blocks had S (k, m partitios o it with m blocks. Hece the total umber of partitios o a -elemet set with m blocks is that sum. This reasoig ca be exteded to DSDs over fiite vector spaces, but it oly couts the umber of DSDs with a block cotaiig a desigated ozero vector v (it does t matter which oe, ot all DSDs. Furthermore, it is ot a simple matter of substitutig ( k q for ( k. Each ( k- elemet subset has a uique k-elemet subset disjoit from it (its complemet, but the same does ot hold i geeral vector spaces. Thus give a subspace with ( k-dimesios, we must compute the umber of k-dimesioal subspaces disjoit from it. Let V be a -dimesioal vector space over GF (q ad let v be a specific ozero vector i V. I a DSD with a ( k-dimesioal block cotaiig v, how may k-dimesioal subspaces are there disjoit from the ( k-dimesioal subspace cotaiig v? The umber of ordered basis sets for a k-dimesioal subspace disjoit from the give ( k-dimesioal space is: ( q q k ( q q k+... ( q q = ( q k q k ( q k q k+... (q q = ( q k ( q k... (q q ( k+( k++...+( = ( q k ( q k... (q q k( k+ 2 k(k sice we use the usual trick to evaluate twice the expoet: ( k + ( k ( +( + ( ( k = (2 k (2 k = k (2 k = 2k (k + ( k k 2 k = 2k ( k + k 2 k. Now the umber of ordered basis set of a k-dimesioal space is: ( q k ( q k... (q q 2 k(k 6
so dividig by that gives: q k( k The umber of k-dimesioal subspaces disjoit from ay ( k-dimesioal subspace. Note that takig q yields the fact that a ( k-elemet subset of a -elemet set has a uique k-elemet subset disjoit from it. Hece i the q-aalog formula, the biomial coefficiet ( k is replaced by the Gaussia biomial coefficiet ( k q times qk( k. The the rest of the proof proceeds as usual. Let Dq (, m deote the umber of DSDs of V with m blocks with oe block cotaiig ay desigated v. The we ca mimic the proof of the formula S (, m = k=0 S (k, m to derive the followig: Propositio 3 Give a desigated ozero vector v V, the umber of DSDs of V with m blocks oe of which cotais v is: Dq (, m = ( k=0 k q qk( k D q (k, m. Note that takig q = gives the right-had side of: ( k=0 k S (k, m sice D (k, m = S (k, m, ad the left-had side is the same as S (, m sice every set partitio of a -elemet with m blocks has to have a block cotaiig some desigated elemet u. Sice the Bell umbers ca be obtaied from the Stirlig umbers of the secod time as: B ( = m= S (, m, there is clearly a similar formula for the Bell umbers: B ( = ( k=0 k B (k Summatio formula for B (. This formula ca also be directly prove usig the desigated elemet u reasoig, so it ca be similarly be exteded to computig D q (, the umber of DSDs of V with a block cotaiig a desigated ozero vector v. Propositio 4 Give a desigated ozero vector v V, the umber of DSDs of V with a block cotaiig v is: Dq ( = ( k=0 k q qk( k D q (k. I the same maer, takig q = yields the classical summatio formula for B ( sice D (k = B (k ad every partitio has to have a block cotaiig a desigated elemet u. Furthermore the D umbers have the expected relatio: Corollary D q( = m= D q (, m. Sice we also have formulas for the total umber of DSDs, we have the umber of DSDs where the desigated elemet is ot i oe of the blocks: D q (, m Dq (, m ad D q ( Dq (. For a atural iterpretatio for the D -umbers, cosider the pedagogical model of quatum mechaics usig fiite-dimesioal vector spaces V over GF (2 = Z 2, called quatum mechaics over sets, QM/Sets [4]. The observables or attributes are defied by real-valued fuctios o basis sets. Give a basis set U = {u,..., u } for V = Z 2 = (U, a real-valued attribute is a fuctio f : U R. It determies a set partitio { f (r } r f(u o U ad a DSD { ( f (r } r f(u o (U. I full QM, the importat thig about a observable is ot the specific umerical eigevalues, but its eigespaces for distict eigevalues, ad that iformatio is i the DSD of its eigespaces. The attribute f : U R caot be iteralized as a operator o (U = Z 2 (uless ( k This was prove usig Möbius iversio o the lattice of subspaces by Crapo [3]. 7
its values are 0,, but it evertheless determies the DSD { ( f (r } which is sufficiet to r f(u pedagogically model may quatum results. Hece a DSD ca be thought of a abstract attribute (without the eigevalues with its blocks servig as eigespaces. The a atural questio to ask is give ay ozero vector v V = Z 2, how may abstract attributes are there where v is a eigevector ad the aswer is D2 (. Ad D2 (, m is the umber of abstract attributes with m distict eigevalues where v is a eigevector. 3 Computig iitial values for q = 2 I the case of =, 2, 3, the DSDs ca be eumerated by had to check the formulas, ad the the formulas ca be used to compute higher values of D 2 (, m or D 2 (. All vectors i the -dimesioal vector space Z 2 over GF (2 = Z 2 will be expressed i terms of a computatioal basis {a}, {b},..., {c} so ay vector S i Z 2 would be represeted i that basis as a subset S U = {a, b,..., c}. The additio of subsets (expressed i the same basis is the symmetric differece: for S, T U, S + T = (S T (T S = (S T (S T. Sice all subspaces cotai the zero elemet which is the empty set, it will be usually suppressed whe listig the elemets of a subspace. Ad subsets like {a} or {a, b} will be deoted as just a ad ab. Thus the subspace {, {a}, {b}, {a, b}} is deoted as {a, b, ab}. A k-dimesioal subspace has 2 k elemets so oly 2 k are listed. For =, there is oly oe ozero subspace {a}, i.e., {, {a}}, ad D 2 (, = D 2 ( =. For = 2, the whole subspace is {a, b, ab} ad it has three bases {a, b}, {a, ab}, ad {b, ab}. The formula for the umber of bases gives D 2 (2, 2 = 3. The oly D 2 (2, = DSD is the whole space. For = 3, the whole space {a, b, c, ab, ac, bc, abc} is the oly D 2 (3, = ad ideed for ay ad q, D q (, =. For = 3 ad m = 3, D 2 (3, 3 is the umber of (uordered bases of Z 3 2 (recall { } q = for all q. Sice we kow the sigature, i.e., a = 3 ad otherwise a k = 0, we ca easily compute D 2 (3, 3: Ad here they are. = 3! a!a 2!...a! [3] 2! For = 3 ad m = 2, D 2 (3, 2 is the umber of biary DSDs, each of which has the sigature a = a 2 = so the total umber of biary DSDs is: Ad here they are: D 2 (3, 2 =!! [3] 2! 2 2( ([]! The above table has bee arraged to illustrate the result that ay give k-dimesioal subspaces has q k( k subspaces disjoit from it. For = 3 ad k =, each row gives the 2 2 = 4 subspaces disjoit from ay give -dimesioal subspace represeted by {a}, {b},..., {abc}. For istace, the four subspaces disjoit from the subspace {ab} (shorthad for {, {a, b}} are give i the third row sice those are the complemetary subspaces that together with {ab} form a DSD. For q = 2, the iitial values up to = 6 of D 2 (, mare give the followig table. \m , , 46 68, , , , , 053, , 989, , 99, , 998, 208 D 2 (, m with, m =, 2,..., 6.
