Buchdahl, by iposing a few reasonable physical assuptions on the atter, i.e., its density is a nonincreasing function of the radius and the fluid is a perfect fluid, and on the configuration, such as the exterior is the Schwarzschild solution, found that the radius r 0 to ass ratio of a star would obey the bound r 0 / 9/4, the Buchdahl bound. He also noted that the bound was saturated by the Schwarzschild interior solution, i.e., the solution with ρ (r) = constant, where ρ (r) is the energy density of the atter at r, when the central central pressure blows to infinity. Generalizations of this bound in various fors have been studied. An iportant generalization was given by Andréasson by including electrically charged atter and iposing a different set of conditions, naely, p+p T ρ, where p is the radial pressure and p T the tangential ( pressure. His bound is sharp and is given by r 0 / 9/ 1+, 1+3q /r0) the Buchdahl-Andréasson bound, with q being the total electric charge of the star. For q = 0 one recovers the Buchdahl bound. However, following Andréasson s proof, the configuration that saturates the Buchdahl bound is an uncharged shell, rather than the Schwarzschild interior solution. By extension, the configurations that saturate the electrically charged Buchdahl-Andréasson bound are charged shells. One could expect then, in turn, that there should exist an electrically charged equivalent to the interior Schwarzschild liit. We find here that this equivalent is provided by the equation ρ (r) + Q (r)/ ( 8πr 4) = constant, where Q(r) is the electric charge at r. This equation was put forward by Cooperstock and de la Cruz, and Florides, and realized in Guilfoyle s stars. When the central pressure goes to infinity Guilfoyle s stars are configurations that also saturate the Buchdahl-Andréasson bound. It reains to find a proof in Buchdahl s anner such that these configurations are the liiting configurations of the bound.
Sharp bounds on the radius of relativistic charged spheres 1. Introduction Schwarzschild was the first to put forward the idea of a copact object [1]. He found an exact solution in general relativity for a spherical star whose atter content is ade of an incopressible fluid, i.e., ρ (r) = constant, where ρ (r) is the energy density at radius r. This solution is called the interior Schwarzschild solution. Moreover he also established a copactness liit for these configurations, the interior Schwarzschild liit. For a star of radius r 0 and ass, the central pressure p c of the interior Schwarzschild solution becoes infinite when r 0 / = 9/4 (we use units such that G = 1 and c = 1, where G is Newton constant of gravitation and c is the speed of the light.). Thus, for saller r 0 thereis certainly nofluid pressure capable tosustain theconfigurationagainst the gravitational pull, and it will collapse. The existence of an upper bound for the copactness of the atter within a star in equilibriu shown by Schwarzschild [1] gave rise to further interest on the subject. Indeed, Buchdahl [] analyzed a spherically syetric distribution of atter in a odel-independent anner, in quite general ters. He iposed a few physically reasonable restrictions, naely, that the fluid s energy density ρ is non-negative and non-increasing outward, the pressure p is non-negative and isotropic, i.e., the fluid is perfect, and the boundary defined by p = 0 is atched to the exterior Schwarzschild solution. He fount that there was a copactness bound for the configuration given by r 0 / 9/4. In his proof it was clear that the liiting interior Schwarzschild solution (i.e., ρ = constant and p c ) is the configuration that saturates the bound. A different proof for Buchdahl s inequality was given by Andréasson[3]. He assued a different set of restrictions, naely, that p + p T ρ, where p is now the radial pressure, and p T is the tangential pressure, with all three quantities being positive, and the boundary defined by p = 0 is atched to the exterior Schwarzschild solution. With this set of assuptions it was also found that the copactness bound is Buchdahl s, r 0 / 9/4. However, rather than having the liiting interior Schwarzschild solution as saturating the bound, Andréasson found that the bound was saturated by a copact thin shell. Indeed, since a thin shell has by definition p = 0, a siple exercise shows that for a thin shell with p T = ρ one finds r 0 / = 9/4. Still assuing p+p T ρ a proof of Buchdahl s bound, different fro [3] was given by Stalker and Karageorgis [4]. In order to obtain still lower liits for the bound one has to resort to atter with extra properties. The ultiate goal is perhaps to have a configuration hovering at its own gravitational radius. One for of atter that yields repulsion is electrically charged atter. Thus, with new copactness liits in ind, Andréasson sought to devise a bound, the Buchdahl-Andréasson bound for electrically charged atter [5]. He assued still that p + p T ρ, and that the boundary is atched to the exterior Reissner- Nordströ solution. Relying on Stalker and Karageorgis s proof [4], Andréasson found ( the bound r 0 / 9/ 1+, 1+3q /r0) where q is the total electric charge of the
Sharp bounds on the radius of relativistic charged spheres 3 star. Note that generically all the configurations that satisfy the Buchdahl-Andréasson bound are above the gravitational radius r + of the star given by r + = + q. For q = 0 the Buchdahl bound r 0 / 9/4 follows iediately, which yields an r 0 greater than the gravitational radius r + =. For q = r 0 one obtains r 0 / 1, whose lower bound r 0 = is a configuration at its own gravitational radius r +, indeed in this extree case r 0 = r + = = q. This latter configuration is a quasiblack hole. Following the previous proof for the uncharged case [3, 4], it was found [5] that the bound is saturated by ( the copact thin shells that obey p T = ρ. These shells are such that r 0 / = 9/ q /r0) A natural question, raised legitiately by Andréasson [5], is what, if any, are the electrically charged configurations that saturate the bound and that correspond to the (uncharged) interior Schwarzschild liit configuration. In other words, are there electrically charged configurations, other than thin shells, that saturate the bound? And if yes, do they correspond in the uncharged case to the interior Schwarzschild liit configuration? Here we are able to answer these questions in the positive. Defining ρ (r) as the energy density of the atter at r and Q(r) as the electric charge at r, we show that the equation of state suggested by Cooperstock and de la Cruz [6] and Florides [7], naely, ρ (r)+q (r)/(8πr 4 ) = constant, allows to build stars [8, 9], Guilfoyle s stars, which for p c, saturate the Buchdahl-Andréasson bound. This is not a coplete surprise. Cooperstock and de la Cruz [6] and Florides [7] argue forcefully that the above equation of state is the electric charge equivalent to the incopressible equation of state set by Schwarzschild for the interior solution. Given that these electrically charged configurations are the analogous to the interior Schwarzschild configurations, this suggests that a proof of the Buchdahl-Andréasson bound along the lines of Buchdahl [], rather than along the lines of Andréasson [5], should be in sight. Of course, other electrically charged fluids do not obey the Buchdahl-Andréasson bound. It was shown in [10,11]thatafluidwithρ (r) = contantandwithastiffelectricallychargeddistribution Q(r), different fro the Cooperstock-de la Cruz-Florides distribution, does not saturate the Buchdahl-Andréasson bound, although it coes close to. The present paper is organized as follows. In Sec. we write the particular solution of Guilfoyle s work that interests us here, putting the relevant relations in the appropriate for for further analysis. Section 3 is dedicated to find the electrical interior Schwarzschild liit of the Guilfoyle solution. We take the central pressure to infinity and obtain a constraint aong the paraeters of the solution. We show that this constraint saturates the Buchdahl-Andréasson bound. In Sec. 4 we conclude.
Sharp bounds on the radius of relativistic charged spheres 4. The Guilfoyle solutions The Guilfoyle star solutions [8] are exact equilibriu solutions of Einstein-Maxwell equations that were put forward to represent electrically charged stars. The etric is conveniently written in the spherically syetric for, naely, ds = B(r)dt +A(r)dr +r ( dθ +sin θdϕ ). (1) where t, r, θ, ϕ, are the usual Schwarzschild coordinates, and the etric functions A(r) and B(r) depend on the radial coordinate r only. The stars are ade of a cold electrically charged fluid with pressure, have a spherical surface of radius at r = r 0, the star s surface, where the atter pressure vanishes, and exterior to that, for r > r 0, the spacetie is the electroagnetic vacuu, whose etric functions A(r) and B(r), and electric potential φ(r), are given by the Reissner- Nordströ solution B(r) = A 1 (r) = 1 r + q r, () φ(r) = q +const., (3) r with and q being respectively the total ass and total charge of the stars. One of the zeros of the etric functions of equation () gives the gravitational radius r +, i.e., r + = + q. (4) The gravitational radius r + is the horizon radius if the solution is a vacuu solution. The other zero of the etric functions of equation () is the Cauchy horizon radius r, given by r = q. It will not be entioned further as it will not be needed in our analysis. The systes we are interested here belong to a particular class of the Guilfoyle solutions. The interior of these solutions is characterized by the fact that the etric potential B(r) and the electric potential φ(r) are functionally related through a Weyl- Guilfoyle relation, naely, B(r) = a[ ǫφ(r)+b], with a and b being arbitrary constants and ǫ = ±1. We choose the solutions for which b = 0. Another interesting feature of these charged fluids is the relation between the energy density ρ, the pressure p, the charge density ρ e, and the electroagnetic energy density ρ e defined by ρ e = ( i φ) /8πB. All these quantities satisfy the constraint aρ e = ǫ [ρ +3p+(1 a)ρ e ]. The total electric charge within a sphere of radius r, Q(r), which follows by integrating the only nonzero coponent of Maxwell equations, ay be written as Q(r) = φ (r)r, where the prie denotes the derivative with respect to the radial B(r)A(r) coordinate r and without loss of generality an integration constant was set to zero. The class of objects we are interested in here obey ǫφ(r) = B(r)/a. After such
Sharp bounds on the radius of relativistic charged spheres 5 a relation, the electric ( charge inside a spherical surface of radius r is now given by Q(r) = ǫr B (r)/ ) aa(r)b(r). The Guilfoyle s ansatz is copleted by the assuption that the total energy density, i.e., ρ (r)+ρ e (r) = ρ (r)+q (r)/(8πr 4 ), is a constant, naely, ρ (r)+ Q (r) 8πr = 3 4 R. (5) with R being a free paraeter of the odel. Equation (5) was devised by Cooperstock and de la Cruz [6] and Florides [7]. With this, Einstein-Maxwell equations furnish the etric potentials A(r) and B(r), ) 1 A(r) = (1 r, (6) B(r) = R [ a a (k 0 )] a/(a ) 1 r R k 1, (7) and the electric charge Q(r), and the fluid quantities ρ (r) and p(r), Q(r) = ǫ ) 1 a k 0 r (k 3 a R 0 1 r R k 1, (8) 8πρ (r) = 3 R Q (r), r 4 (9) 8πp(r) = 1 R + Q (r) + εq(r) r 4 r 3 1 r R, (10) with k 0 and k 1 being integration constants. There are four constraints. The continuity of the etric functions on the surface r = r 0 yields two constraints. Another constraint coes fro the continuity of the first derivative of the etric function B(r) across the boundary surface r = r 0, iplying that the pressure vanishes at the boundary. An additional constraint coes fro the fact that the solution ust be of Weyl-Guilfoyle type, i.e., here satisfying the relation B(r) = aφ (r) throughout the spacetie, even at the boundary. The iposition of sooth boundary conditions on the boundary surface r = r 0, gives the two constraints that deterine the two integrations constants k 0 and k 1, related then to the paraeters, q, and R, and r 0 by ( )( ) 1/a k 0 = R q 1 r 0, (11) r0 r 0 r0 R k 1 =k 0 1 r 0 R [ 1 a a r0 R ( ) ] 1 q. (1) r 0 r0 The other two constraints give the following relations = 1 ( ) r 0 r 0 R + q, (13) r0 q = (1 a) q [ ] + a 1+(a 1) q. (14) r 0 r0
Sharp bounds on the radius of relativistic charged spheres 6 Hence, fro the several paraeters of the odel,, q, a, r 0, andr, three of the reain free. There are additional constraints. We ipose the stars are not overcharged, which iplies that the pressure is non-negative. This iplies also Furtherore we ipose there are no trapped surfaces, i.e., a 1. (15) r 0 r +, (16) where we allow for the equality, and r + is the gravitational radius of the configuration given in equation (4). Now, by assuption, the stars are not overcharged so that q/ 1 and thus r 0 q 1, r 0 1, (17) are the constraints. In the following we analyze the infinite central pressure liit of these copact stars, and obtain configurations that saturate the Buchdahl-Andréasson bound. 3. The electrical interior Schwarzschild liit and the Buchdahl-Andréasson bound As we know fro the case of the interior Schwarzschild solution, the lower bound of the ratio r 0 / of the Schwarzschild stars is found by allowing the central pressure to assue indefinitely high values. Hence, we search for the range of paraeters in Guilfoyle s solutions for which the central pressure reaches indefinitely large values. The pressure p given in equation (10) behaves for sall r as p(r) r3 k 0 k 1. Thus, the pressure is in general well behaved at r = 0 unless k 0 k 1 = 0. Therefore, the central pressure tends to infinity, p c, when k 0 = k 1. (18) Using relations (11), (1), and (13), equation (18) yields [ 1 r 0 1 a ( ) ] r0 r 1 0 R ar R q = 1. (19) r0 Solving for a equation (14), substituting it into the last equation, and then solving for q /R we find two solutions. One of the yields values of charge whose respective Guilfoyle solutions are in a range of paraeters which do not correspond to charged stars. Naely, they are black holes with infinite central pressure. The second solution is the one that has interest in the present context, and is given by ( ) q r0 = r 0 R 3 r 0 R. (0)
Sharp bounds on the radius of relativistic charged spheres 7 r 0 R = Equation (13) can be written for r 0, i.e., R r 0 q, which upon inserting in r0 equation (0) gives the radius to ass ratio as a function of the electric charge for [ ( ) 1, the electrical interior Schwarzschild liit, naely, r 0 = q + q 9 r0 3r or 0] equivalently, r 0 = 1 ( ), (1) q 3 9 which is the upper liit of copactness for these stars. Consider, now the sharp bound found by Andréasson [5], r 0 1 ( r 0 + q 9 3r0 ), () where and q are respectively the ass and the charge of the star. This constraint is found considering regular solutions, and the upper bound is et considering infinitely thin shells, and, oreover, the condition r 0/q 1 ust be satisfied. We see that the liit equation (1) saturates the bound equation (), i.e., the electrical interior Schwarzschild (in other words, the infinite pressure) liit of the Guilfoyle solution saturates the Buchdahl-Andréasson bound. The corresponding values for r 0 / of equation (1) as a function of q/r 0 are shown in figure 1. Note that the liit of zero charge q/r 0 = 0 gives r 0 / = 9/4, the Schwarzschild result for uncharged stars [1] that saturates the Buchdahl bound []. The liit q/r 0 = 1 gives r 0 / = 1, i.e., the quasiblack hole liit, the configuration where the star radius r 0 touches the horizon radius r +, r 0 = r + = = q in this case [9]..0 r q r 0 Figure 1. The line represents the star radius to ass ratio as a function of the charge to star radius ratio in the electric interior Schwarzschild liit. For each value of the charge ratio q/r 0 it corresponds an r 0 / which is precisely the electric interior Schwarzschild liit for that electric charge. The liit saturates the Buchdahl- Andréasson bound. For q/r 0 = 0 one finds the Schwarzschild result r 0 / = 9/4 that saturates the Buchdahl bound, for q/r 0 = 1 one finds r 0 / = 1, i.e., a quasiblack hole configuration.
Sharp bounds on the radius of relativistic charged spheres 8 It would be interesting to find the Buchdahl-Andréasson bound, equation (), as a function of q/ instead of q/r 0 as it is easier to understand the approach to extreality with the ratio q/. Note that the electric Schwarzschild liit, equation (1), can be anipulated to give a cubic equation for the bound ( r0 ) ( r0 ) 3 ( q + ) ( r0 ) 1 ( q ) 4 0. (3) 4 Unfortunately this is a nasty cubic equation. Nevertheless, one can iediately see fro equation (3) that for q/ = 0 the bound is the Buchdahl bound [1], r 0 / 9/4, and for the extreal liit q/ = 1 the bound is r 0 / 1, i.e., the quasiblack hole liit [9]. The solution of equation (3) can be put in a non-illuinating for, naely, [ ( 1 7 4q 9 q q q 1 4 ( ) [ 1/3 r q 7 4q 9 q q q 1)] )] 1/3, where since q 1 is negative one has to deal ( with coplex nubers. There are three real solutions, one should take the branch that interpolates between the values 9/4 and 1. More descriptive, in figure the bound is displayed for r 0 / as a function of q/. The Buchdal [] and the quasiblack hole [9] liits stand out clearly..0 r q Figure. The line represents the star radius to ass ratio as a function of the charge to star ass ratio in the electric interior Schwarzschild liit. For each value of the charge ratio q/ it corresponds an r 0 / which is precisely the electric interior Schwarzschild liit for that electric charge. The liit saturates the Buchdahl- Andréasson bound. For q/ = 0 one finds the Schwarzschild result r 0 / = 9/4 that saturates the Buchdahl bound, for q/ = 1 one finds r 0 / = 1, i.e., a quasiblack hole configuration. Finally we copare the line r 0 / of the Buchdahl-Andréasson bound as a function ofq/given throughequation(3) withthegravitational radius liner + /asafunction of q/, r + = 1+ 1 q, (4) see equation (4). The coparison of the two lines is done neatly in figure 3. It is clear
Sharp bounds on the radius of relativistic charged spheres 9 fro the figure that the star radius r 0 / is always above the star s gravitational radius r + /, except for the quasiblack hole configuration where the two radii are coincident..0 r r q Figure 3. The solid line is the sae as in figure. The dot-dashed line represents the gravitational radius to ass ratio as a function of the charge to star ass ratio. For q/ = 0 one finds r 0 / = 9/4 =.5 and the Schwarzschild radius r + / =, for q/ = 1 one finds that both radii are equal, r 0 / = 1 and r + / = 1, i.e., a quasiblack hole configuration. 4. Conclusions We have shown that in addition to the electrically charged thin shells with p +p T = ρ, the infinite central ( pressure Guilfoyle s stars also obey the Buchdahl-Andréasson bound, r 0 / 9/ q /r0) It would be interesting to find a proof in Buchdahl s anner such that these infinite central pressure configurations are the liiting configurations of the bound.
