-- uadrupolar Glass Sae in para-hydrogen and orho-deuerium under pressure. T.I.Schelkacheva. arxiv:cond-ma/ May Insiue for High Pressure Physics, Russian Academy of Sciences, Troisk 49, Moscow Region, Russia schelk@hppi.roisk.ru The main feaures of he possible uadrupolar glass sae in orhodeuerium and para-hydrogen under high pressure are prediced and considered in replica-symmeric approximaion in analogy wih glassy behavior of dilued orho-hydrogen a low pressures. The uadrupolar model wih = is suggesed. The orienaional order and glass regime grow coninuously on cooling jus as i is in he case of orho-para hydrogen mixures a zero pressure. The srucure of high pressure phases of solid hydrogen has been widely invesigaed recenly e.g. [,, 3]. A low pressures, he ceners of parahydrogen and orho-deuerium molecules occupy he laice sies of he hcp srucure. The molecules are in spherically symmeric saes phase I or SP. Beween 8 Gpa for o-d and Gpa for p-h and 5 Gpa he molecules become orienaionally ordered in broken-symmery phase II BS. High pressure breaks he roaional symmery of he = solids. The ordering occurs even in he sysems of para-hydrogen and orho-deuerium molecules because of mixing of higher order levels wih he ground sae = as a resul of he increase of he inermolecular ineracions a high pressures [,]. The anisoropic ineracion beween wo molecules is
-- dominaed a low pressures [5] by elecrosaic uadrupole-uadrupole E ineracion, which plays a major role below Gpa [, 4]. However i is necessary o ake ino accoun oher anisoropic ineracions o undersand he resuls of precise experimens e.g. Raman scaering []. The purpose of his aricle is o show he possibiliy of orienaional glass sae in solid p-h and o-d under pressure. Only he main feaures of his phenomenon will be aken ino accoun. The = = ransiions ake place as a resul of he pressure increasing. In his case he = molecules may be randomly disribued on a close packed laice. I has been indicaed in [, 6] ha roaional disorder under pressure may be frozen. The molecules wih = are spherically symmeric, have no elecric uadrupole momen and play he role of diluan. So we can consider he uadrupolar glass sae in analogy wih glassy behavior of dilued o-h and p-d a low emperaures and pressures. In his case only he orho-hydrogen and para-deuerium molecular species are orienable. They have orbial angular momenum =. The ordered sae is characeriezed by a long-range orienaional order a high orho-h and para-d concenraions [5]. However, for concenraions less han approximaely 55%, measuremens show no evidence of orienaional phase ransiion. Insead, NMR experimens have been inerpreed in erms of freezing of he he orienaional degrees of freedom [7, 5]. This sae is so called uadrupolar glass. The E ineracion can bring abou orienaional glass sae a high pressure in p-h and o-d. The rough esimaion of ransiion probabiliy can be done [4, 6] using uanum mechanical perurbaion heory because he main anisoropic par E of he inermolecular ineracion is small [5]. We have = 4-4 for D and =6-5 for H a zero pressure. The probabiliy o find a = molecule increases srongly wih pressure; =. a 4 Gpa for D and 5 Gpa for H and =.4 for
-3- D a 5 Gpa. I is possible ha an inermediae range of exiss where a uadrupolar glass occurs. Le us consider he sysem of paricles on laice sies i, j wih he runcaed E Hamilonian H i j ij i j where he uadrupole componen z 3 can be replaced by r euivalen operaor wih he same marix elemens 3 z in he space = cons. Sp. uadrupolar glass freezing in mixures of orho- and para-hydrogen has been considered [8] wih z z 3,,, and =. This model describes well he zero pressure experimens on orho- para mixures even in replica-symmeric approach. Now he Hamilonian will be examined on he condiion = and z =,, -,, z, 3 ij are random exchange ineracions wih Gaussian probabiliy disribuion P = ij exp ij.
-4- The scaling N, N ensures as usual sensible hermodynamic limi. The muliplier /3 in 3 is used for simpliciy. Using replica mehod he free energy is obained in he form }. exp ln,, } { max{ lim y w x Tr n N F y w x n Exreme condiions for he free energy give he euaions for order parameers ; / ;,, eff exr eff exr y x m ; / eff exr w p where and averaging is performed wih he effecive Hamilonian p m H eff, Free energy and order parameers in he replica-symmeric [9] case become. exp ln exp 4 4 Sp z dz p m N F 4 Here p and m z. Order parameers are: m uadrupolar order parameer analog of magneic momen in spin glasses, glass order parameer and p auxiliary order parameer.
m dz z Sp exp exp exp Sp -5-4 exp exp exp 4 exp exp exp dz z exp exp exp, 5 dz z Sp exp exp exp Sp 4 exp exp exp 4 exp exp exp dz z exp exp 4 exp, 6 p dz z Sp exp exp exp Sp 4 exp exp exp 4 exp exp exp dz z exp exp exp. 7 The emperaure dependence of order parameers obained from 5 7 is represened in figures - 3. There is no rivial soluion m =, = a finie emperaure because Sp 3. The orienaional order and glass regime grow coninuously on cooling jus as i is in he case of he Hamilonian describing he orho-para hydrogen mixures a zero pressure [8]. The uadrupolar long range order is presen for T > even if, we have from 5 6 m =. In he pure case I is easy o see from ha.. So he euaion for p is no independen and p m. There is no similar expression for from 3 and for order parameer p here. Using he euaion 4 for he free energy he hea capaciy can be wrien in he form C v kn d p dm m d d. 8
-6- Specific hea as a funcion of calculaed from 8 for he four cases of is shown in figure 4. The dependence of C v on he emperaure is smooh as in orho-para mixures a zero pressure. In conclusion, he main feaures of he random uadrupolar sysem, 3 are considered in he replica-symmeric mean-field approximaion. This sysem wih = has no been considered earlier. The possible realizaion of he uadrupolar glass sae under high pressure in orho-deuerium and para-hydrogen is prediced. The auhor is graeful o E.E.Tareyeva and V.N.Ryzhov for useful and simulaing discussions. This work was suppored by he Russian Foundaion for Basic Research Gran --66-a.
