2 2 BAPTISTE ANEROT 2, JACKY CRESSON,2 AND FRÉDÉRIC PIERRET3. Introduction The clculus on time-scles initited by Stefn Hilger in [4] gives convenient wy to del with discrete, continuous or mixed processes using unique formlism. In 2004, this theory ws used by M. Bohner [6] nd R. Hilscher nd V. Zeidn [5] to develop clculus of vritions on time scles. In this context, mny nturl problems rise. One of them is to generlize to the time scles setting clssicl results of the clculus of vrition in the continuous cse. One of these problem is to obtin time scles nlogue of the Noether s Theorem relting group of symmetries nd conservtion lws. The im of this rticle is precisely to derive time scles version of the Noether s theorem. We refer to the books of Olver [8] nd Jost [6] for the clssicl cse. This problem ws initilly considered by Z. Brtosiewicz nd D.F.M. Torres in [3] but both the result nd the proof re incomplete. In the following, we follow the strtegy of proof proposed in [3] consisting in deriving the Noether s theorem for trnsformtions depending on time from the esier result obtined for trnsformtions without chnging the time. In [], we cll Jost s method this wy of proving the Noether s theorem s clssicl reference is contined in the book [6]... Min result. Our min result cn be formulted s follows. Let T be bounded time scle with = mint), b = mxt) nd crdt) 3. We denote by ρ nd σ the bckwrd nd forwrd jump opertor see Definition ). We set T κ = T\]ρb), b], T κ = T\[, σ)[ nd T κ κ = T κ T κ. We denote by C, rd T) the set of -differentible functions on T κ with rd-continuous -derivtive see Definition 5). Let us consider functionl L : C, T) R defined by Lq) = rd Lt, qt), qt)) t, where L : [, b] R d R d R is Lgrngin. The criticl point of L re solutions of the time-scle Euler-Lgrnge eqution see [9]): [ ] L t, qt), qt)) = σt) L t, qt), qt)), ) v x for every t T κ κ. Following [3], time-scle Lgrngin functionl L is sid to be invrint under the oneprmeter fmily group G = {g s } s R of trnsformtions g s x, t) = gst), 0 gsx)) if nd only if for ny subintervl [t, t b ] [, b] with t, t b T, for ny s R nd x C, T) one hs tb t L t, xt), xt)) t = τb where τ = g 0 st ) nd τ b = g 0 st b ). τ rd L τ, gs x gs) 0 τ), T g s x gs) 0 τ) )) Tτ 2) In the following, we need the notion of dmissible group of symmetries which corresponds to one-prmeter group of diffeomorphisms stisfying:

Our min result is the following version of the time-scle Noether s theorem: Theorem Time-scle Noether s theorem). Suppose G = {g s t, x) = gst), 0 gsx))} s R is n dmissible one prmeter group of symmetries of the vritionl problem nd Lx) = L t, xt), xt)) t X = ζt) t + ξx) x, 3) be the infinitesiml genertor of G. Then, the function It, x) = ζ σ [L ) v L ) x]+ξ σ v L )+ t ζ [ σ t L ) L v L x)] t, 4) is constnt of motion over the solution of the time-scle Euler-Lgrnge eqution ), i.e. tht [It, xt))] = 0, 5) for ll solutions x of the time-scle Euler-Lgrnge equtions nd ny t T κ. The proof is given in Section 3. In the continuous cse T = R, one obtin the clssicl form of the integrl of motion becuse the lst integrl term is reduced to zero. It, x) = ζ L ) v L )ẋ) + ξ v L ), 6) Lgrnge eqution one hs the identity t L ) = d dt L ) vl )ẋ). Indeed, on the solutions of the Euler- In the discrete cse, T = Z nd trnsformtions without chnging time, one recovers the clssicl integrl see [0], Theorem 2 p.885 nd lso [7]):.2. Comments on previous results. Ix) = ξ σ v L ). 7).2.. The Brtosiewicz nd Torres result. In [3] the uthors obtin time scles version of the Noether theorem in the shifted version of the clculus of vrition on time scles. However, their result cn be esily extended to the non shifted cse following the sme pths. It coincides with our result for trnsformtions without chnging time but differs from it in the other cses. As illustrted in Section 4 with n exmple nd numericl simultions, the result in [3] is not correct. The reson is tht in order to follow their scheme of proof see Section.3) the

This quntity is discussed in the next Section The second Euler-Lgrnge eqution pproch. As lredy noted, in the continuous cse T = R, condition 8) is well known nd corresponds to the second Euler-Lgrnge eqution or the Dubois-Rymond necessry optimlity condition. A time-scles nlogue of the second Euler-Lgrnge eqution ws derived by Brtosiewicz, Mrtins nd Torres in [4], Theorem 5 p.2) leding to nother proof of the time-scle Noether s theorem see [4],Section 4, Theorem 6). As lredy sid, the result in [3] is wrong without dditionl ssumptions. As consequence, we believe tht the time scles second Euler-Lgrnge eqution in [4] must be tken with cre..3. A time scles Jost s method of proof. The pproch used by Brtosiewicz nd Torres to prove their time scles Noether s theorem is n dpttion of method which cn be found in the clssicl Textbook by J. Jost nd X. Li-Jost [6] on the clculus of vritions. Formlly, the ide is very simple. One introduce n extr vrible corresponding to the time vrible in order to trnsform the cse of invrince under trnsformtions chnging time to cse of invrince without chnging the time vrible for n extended Lgrngin which is explicitly constructed from the initil Lgrngin. The corresponding Noether s theorem then follows from the one for trnsformtions without chnging time which is esier. We refer to [6] for more detils. However, s in the frctionl cse, where the sme method of proof were used, severl problems rise when dpting the method of Jost to the time-scle cse. In prticulr, one must be very creful with the vlidity of the chnge of vribles nd the fct tht one cn used the time-scle Noether s theorem for trnsformtions without chnging time. In prticulr, the proof proposed in [3] does not work precisely becuse one cn not use the utonomous version of the Noether s theorem but only the infinitesiml invrince chrcteriztion see Section 3, Lemm 3 nd fter). It must be pointed out tht there exists severl wy to prove the Noether s theorem. However, we decide to follow the sme strtegy of Brtosiewicz nd Torres in [3] becuse this method is very elegnt nd mny other generliztions re bsed on it. As consequence, the problems tht we re discussing will be of importnce for other works. This work ws in fct suggested by recent rticle [2] showing tht the frctionl Noether theorem proved by Frederico nd Torres in [3] is wrong. However, the rticle [2] does not provide cler understnding of where nd why the result is not correct. The second uthor nd A. Szfrnsk hve nlysed in [] the proof given in [3] which is n dpttion of the Jost s method to the frctionl clculus of vritions. Severl problems ws then pointed out which cn occur when generlizing the Jost s method to nother frmework.
5 A TIME SCALES NOETHER S THEOREM 5.4. Pln of the pper. The pln of the pper is s follows. In Section 2, we remind some definitions nd nottions bout time-scles nd give some prticulr sttements bout the chin rule formul nd the substitution formul for -derivtive in the time-scles setting. Section 3 gives the proof of our min result. The proof of severl technicl Lemms re given in Section 5. In Section 4, we discuss n exmple first studied by Brtosiewicz nd Torres in [3]. We compre the quntity tht we hve obtined with the one derived in [3] using numericl integrtion. In prticulr, it shows tht the conservtion lw obtined in [3] does not give n integrl of motion contrry to the quntity obtined using our Theorem. 2. Preliminries on time scles In this Section, we remind some results bout the chin rule formul, the chnge of vrible formul for -ntiderivtive which will be used during the proof of the min result. We refer to [, 6, 7, 8] nd references therein for more detils on time scle clculus. Definition. 6 6 BAPTISTE ANEROT 2, JACKY CRESSON,2 AND FRÉDÉRIC PIERRET3 We respectively denote by Crd 0 T) nd C, rd T) the functionl spces of rd-continuous functions on T nd of -differentible functions on T κ with rd-continuous -derivtive. Let us denote by τ the Cuchy -integrl defined in [6, p.26] with the following result see [6, Theorem.74 p.27]): Theorem 2. 7 A TIME SCALES NOETHER S THEOREM 7 The proof is given in Section 5.. As for the clssicl cse, we construct n extended Lgrngin functionl L ssocited with the utonomous Lgrngin L s follows: Let L : C, 2 [, b], R) C2, [, b], R) R defined by Lt, x) = L tτ), xtτ)), Ttτ), Txtτ))) τ. 4) where L : R R d R R d R is defined by Lt, x, w, v) = L t, x, v ) w. 5) w which is the sme s the clssicl cse. In order to formulte the time-scle Euler-Lgrnge eqution for the extended utonomous Lgrngin, we need to hve the Ts -differentibility of σ. We hve: Lemm 2. Let s R. 8 8 BAPTISTE ANEROT 2, JACKY CRESSON,2 AND FRÉDÉRIC PIERRET3 The proof is given in Section 5.2. Contrry to the continuous cse, Lemm 3 implies tht extended solutions of the initil Lgrngin re not utomticlly solutions of the extended Euler-Lgrnge eqution. This implies tht one cn not use the Noether s theorem but only the infinitesiml invrince criterion. Lemm 4. Let L be time-scle Lgrngin functionl invrint under the one-prmeter group of diffeomorphisms g. Then, the time-scle Lgrngin functionl L is invrint under the one-prmeter group of diffeomorphisms g over F. The proof is given in Section 5.3. We deduce from Lemm 4 nd the necessry condition of invrince given in [3],Theorem 2 p.223) tht t L ).ζ + x L ).ξ + v L ). ξ + L ) v L ). x). ζ = 0. 9) Multiplying eqution 9) by σ nd using the Time scles Euler-Lgrnge eqution ), we obtin t L ). σ.ζ + σ. v L ). The initil conditions re chosen such tht x) = nd x) = 0.. We disply in Figure, the two quntities computed numericlly with =, b = 0 nd h = 0 3.
