nd differentil clculus, which re otined y choosing T = Z or T = R, respectively. The suject ws initited y S. Hilger in the nineties of the XX century [17, 18], nd is now under strong current reserch in mny different fields in which dynmic processes cn e descried with discrete, continuous, or hyrid models. For concepts nd preliminry results on time scles, we refer the reder to [6, 7]. In this pper we strt y proving some integrl inequlities on time scles involving convex functions (see Section 2. These re then pplied in Section 3 to solve some clsses of vritionl prolems on time scles. A simple illustrtive exmple is given in Section 4. The method proposed here is direct, in the sense tht it permits to find directly the optiml solution insted of using vritionl rguments nd go through the usul procedure of solving the ssocited delt or nl Euler Lgrnge equtions [2, 4, 11, 19]. This is prticulrly useful since even simple clsses of prolems of the clculus of vritions on time scles led to dynmic Euler Lgrnge equtions for which methods to compute explicit solutions re not known. A second dvntge of the method is tht it provides directly n optiml solution, while the vritionl method on time scles initited in [4] nd further developed in [3, 12, 14, 2] is sed on necessry optimlity conditions, eing necessry further nlysis in order to conclude if the cndidte is locl minimizer, locl mximizer, or just sddle (see [4] for second order necessry nd sufficient conditions. Finlly, while ll the previous methods of the clculus of vritions on time scles only estlish locl optimlity, here we provide glol solutions. The use of inequlities to solve certin clsses of optiml control prolems is n old ide with rich history [8, 9, 1, 15, 16, 21]. We hope tht the present study will e the eginning of clss of direct methods for optiml control prolems on time scles, to e investigted with the help of dynmic inequlities see [1, 5, 1, 13, 22, 23, 24] nd references therein. 2 Integrl Inequlities on Time Scles The first theorem is generliztion to time scles of the well-known Jensen inequlity. It cn e found in [22, 24]. Theorem 1 (GenerlizedJensen sinequlity[22,24]. Let, T nd c,d R. Suppose f : [,] κ T (c,d is rd-continuous nd F : (c,d R is convex. Moreover, let h : [,] κ T R e rd-continuous with Then, h(t t >. h(t F(f(t t h(t t F ( h(t f(t t h(t t. (1 Proposition 2. If F in Theorem 1 is strictly convex nd h(t for ll t [,] κ T, then equlity in (1 holds if nd only if f is constnt. 2
Proof. Consider x (c,d defined y x = h(t f(t t h(t t. From the definition of strict convexity, there exists m R such tht F(x F(x > m(x x for ll x (c,d\{x }. Assume f is not constnt. Then, f(t x for some t [,] κ T. We split the proof in two cses. (i Assume tht t is right-dense. Then, since f is rd-continuous, we hve tht f(t x on [t,t +δ T for some δ >. Hence, h(t F(f(t t h(t tf(x = > m =. h(t [F(f(t F(x ] t h(t [f(t x ] t (ii Assume now tht t is right-scttered. Then (note tht σ(t t f(t t = µ(t f(t, h(t F(f(t t = = > t + t + h(t tf(x h(t [F(f(t F(x ] t h(t [F(f(t F(x ] t+ σ(t σ(t t h(t [F(f(t F(x ] t h(t [F(f(t F(x ] t+m σ(t h(t [F(f(t F(x ] t { t m h(t [f(t x ] t+ = m } + h(t [f(t x ] t σ(t h(t [f(t x ] t =. σ(t t σ(t t h(t [F(f(t F(x ] t h(t [f(t x ] t h(t [f(t x ] t Finlly, if f is constnt, it is ovious tht the equlity in (1 holds. 3
Remrk 3. If F in Theorem 1 is concve function, then the inequlity sign in (1 must e reversed. Oviously, Proposition 2 remins true if we let F e strictly concve. Before proceeding, we stte two prticulr cses of Theorem 1. Corollry 4. Let,,c,d R. Suppose f : [,] (c,d is continuous nd F : (c,d R is convex. Moreover, let h : [,] R e continuous with Then, h(t dt >. h(t F(f(tdt h(t dt F ( h(t f(tdt h(t dt. Proof. Choose T = R in Theorem 1. Corollry 5. Let = q n nd = q m for some n,m N with n < m. Define f nd h on [q n,q m 1 ] q N nd ssume F : (c,d R is convex, where (c,d [f(q n,f(q m 1 ] q N. If then n 1 k=m q k (q 1 h(q k >, ( n 1 n 1 k=m qk h(q k F(f(q k k=m n 1 F qk h(q k f(q k k=m qk h(q k n 1. k=m qk h(q k Proof. Choose T = q N = {q k : k N }, q > 1, in Theorem 1. Jensen s inequlity (2 is proved in [1, Theorem 4.1]. Theorem 6. Let, T nd c,d R. Suppose f : [,] κ T (c,d is rdcontinuous nd F : (c,d R is convex (resp., concve. Then, F(f(t t ( F f(t t (2 (resp., the reverse inequlity. Moreover, if F is strictly convex or strictly concve, then equlity in (2 holds if nd only if f is constnt. Proof. This is prticulr cse of Theorem 1 nd Proposition 2 with h(t = 1 for ll t [,] κ T. We now stte nd prove some consequences of Theorem 6. 4
Corollry 7. Let, T nd c,d R. Suppose f : [,] κ T (c,d is rdcontinuous nd F : (c,d R is such tht F (resp., F. Then, F(f(t t ( F f(t t (3 (resp., the reverse inequlity. Furthermore, if F > or F <, equlity in (3 holds if nd only if f is constnt. Proof. This follows immeditely from Theorem 6 nd the fcts tht function F with F (resp., F is convex (resp., concve nd with F > (resp., F is strictly convex (resp., strictly concve. Corollry 8. Let, T nd c,d R. Suppose f : [,] κ T (c,d is rdcontinuous nd ϕ,ψ : (c,d R re continuous functions such tht ϕ 1 exists, ψ is strictly incresing, nd ψ ϕ 1 is convex (resp., concve on Im(ϕ. Then, ( ψ 1 ψ(f(t t ( ϕ 1 ϕ(f(t t (resp., the reverse inequlity. Furthermore, if ψ ϕ 1 is strictly convex or strictly concve, the equlity holds if nd only if f is constnt. Proof. Since ϕ is continuous nd ϕ f is rd-continuous, it follows from Theorem 6 with f = ϕ f nd F = ψ ϕ 1 tht (ψ ( ϕ 1 ((ϕ f(t t (ψ ϕ 1 (ϕ f(t t. Since ψ is strictly incresing, we otin ( ψ 1 ψ(f(t t ( ϕ 1 ϕ(f(t t. Finlly, when ψ ϕ 1 is strictly convex, the equlity holds if nd only if ϕ f is constnt, or equivlently (since ϕ is invertile, f is constnt. The cse when ψ ϕ 1 is concve is treted nlogously. Corollry 9. Assume f : [,] κ T R is rd-continuous nd positive. If α < or α > 1, then If < α < 1, then ( α (f(t α t ( f(t t 1 α. ( α (f(t α t ( f(t t 1 α. Furthermore, in oth cses equlity holds if nd only if f is constnt. 5
Proof. Define F(x = x α, x >. Then F (x = α(α 1x α 2, x >. Hence, when α < or α > 1, F >, i.e., F is strictly convex. When < α < 1, F <, i.e., F is strictly concve. Applying Corollry 7 with this function F, we otin the ove inequlities with equlity if nd only if f is constnt. Corollry 1. Assume f : [,] κ T R is rd-continuous nd positive. If α < 1 or α >, then ( α 1 f(t t (f(t α t ( 1+α. If 1 < α <, then ( α 1 f(t t (f(t α t ( 1+α. Furthermore, in oth cses the equlity holds if nd only if f is constnt. Proof. This follows from Corollry 9 y replcing f y 1/f nd α y α. Corollry 11. If f : [,] κ T R is rd-continuous, then e f(t t ( e 1 f(t t. (4 Moreover, equlity in (4 holds if nd only if f is constnt. Proof. Choose F(x = e x, x R, in Corollry 7. Corollry 12. If f : [,] κ T R is rd-continuous nd positive, then ( 1 ln(f(t t ( ln f(t t. (5 Moreover, equlity in (5 holds if nd only if f is constnt. Proof. Let F(x = ln(x, x >, in Corollry 7. Corollry 13. If f : [,] κ T R is rd-continuous nd positive, then ( 1 f(tln(f(t t f(t tln f(t t. (6 Moreover, equlity in (6 holds if nd only if f is constnt. Proof. Let F(x = xln(x, x >. Then, F (x = 1/x, i.e., F (x > for ll x >. By Corollry 7, we get 1 f(tln(f(t t 1 ( 1 f(t tln f(t t, nd the result follows. 6
3 Applictions to the Clculus of Vritions We now show how the results of Section 2 cn e pplied to determine the minimum or mximum of prolems of clculus of vritions nd optiml control on time scles. Theorem 14. Let T e time scle,, T with <, nd ϕ : R R e positive nd continuous function. Consider the functionl [{ 1 } ]α F(y( = ϕ(y(t+hµ(ty (tdh y (t t, α R\{,1}, defined on ll Crd 1 -functions y : [,] T R stisfying y (t > on [,] κ T, y( =, nd y( = B. Let G(x = x ϕ(sds, x, nd let G 1 denote its inverse. Let B C = ϕ(sds. (7 (i If α < or α > 1, then the minimum of F occurs when nd F min = ( C α. y(t = G 1 (C(t, t [,] T, (ii If < α < 1, then the mximum of F occurs when nd F mx = ( C α. y(t = G 1 (C(t, t [,] T, Remrk 15. Since ϕ is continuous nd positive, G nd G 1 re well defined. Remrk 16. In cses α = or α = 1 there is nothing to minimize or mximize, i.e., the prolem of extremizing F(y( is trivil. Indeed, if α =, then F(y( = ; if α = 1, then it follows from [6, Theorem 1.9] tht { 1 } F(y( = ϕ(y(t+hµ(ty (tdh y (t t = = G(B. (G y (t t In oth cses F is constnt nd does not depend on the function y. Proof of Theorem 14. Suppose tht α < or α > 1. Using Corollry 9, we cn write [ { 1 } ] α F(y( ( 1 α ϕ(y(t+hµ(ty (tdh y (t t = ( 1 α (G(y( G(y( α, 7
where the equlity holds if nd only if { 1 } ϕ(y(t+hµ(ty (tdh y (t = c for some c R, t [,] κ T. Using [6, Theorem 1.9], we rrive t (G y (t = c. Delt integrting from to t yields (note tht y( = nd G( = from which we get G(y(t = c(t, y(t = G 1 (c(t. The vlue of c is otined using the oundry condition y( = B: c = G(B B = ϕ(sds = C, with C s in (7. Finlly, in this cse F min = C α t = ( C α. Theproofofthe secondprtofthe theoremisdonenlogouslyusingthe second prt of Corollry 9. Remrk 17. We notethtthe optimlsolutionfoundin the proofoftheprevious theorem stisfies y >. Indeed, y (t = ( G 1 (C(t = 1 >, (G 1 [C(t +hµ(tc]dh C ecuse C > nd (G 1 (G(x = 1 ϕ(x > for ll x. Theorem 18. Let ϕ : [,] κ T R e positive nd rd-continuous function. Then, mong ll Crd 1 -functions y : [,] T R with y( = nd y( = B, the functionl F(y( = ϕ(te y (t t hs minimum vlue F min = ( e C ttined when where y(t = t ln(ϕ(s s+c(t, t [,] T, C = ln(ϕ(t t+b. (8 8
Proof. By Corollry 11, F(y( = e ln(ϕ(t+y (t t ( e 1 [ln(ϕ(t+y (t] t = ( e [ 1 ln(ϕ(t t+b], with F(y( = ( e [ 1 ln(ϕ(t t+b] if nd only if ln(ϕ(t+y (t = c for some c R, t [,] κ T. (9 Integrting (9 from to t (note tht y( = gives y(t = t ln(ϕ(s s+c(t, t [,] T. Using the oundry condition y( = B we hve c = ln(ϕ(t t+b = C, with C s in (8. A simple clcultion shows tht F min = ( e C. Theorem 19. Let ϕ : [,] κ T R e positive nd rd-continuous function. Then, mong ll Crd 1 -functions y : [,] T R stisfying y >, y( =, nd y( = B, with B + ϕ(s s > ϕ(t, t [,] κ T, (1 the functionl F(y( = [ϕ(t+y (t]ln[ϕ(t+y (t] t hs minimum vlue F min = ( Cln(C ttined when where y(t = C(t t ϕ(s s, t [,] T, C = B + ϕ(s s. (11 Proof. By Corollry 13, ( F(y( [ϕ(t+y 1 (t] tln [ϕ(t+y (t] t ( ( = ϕ(t t+b ln ϕ(t t+b 9
( with F(y( = ϕ(t t+b ln ( ϕ(t t+b if nd only if ϕ(t+y (t = c for some c R, t [,] κ T. Upon integrtion from to t (note tht y( =, y(t = c(t t Using the oundry condition y( = B, we hve ϕ(s s, t [,] T. c = B + ϕ(s s = C, where C is s in (11. Note tht with this choice of y we hve, using (1, tht y (t = C ϕ(t >, t [,] κ T. It follows tht F min = ( Cln(C. 4 An Exmple Let T = Z, =, = 5, B = 25 nd ϕ(t = 2t+1 in Theorem 19: Exmple 2. The functionl F(y( = 4 [(2t+1+(y(t+1 y(t]ln[(2t+1+(y(t+1 y(t], t= defined for ll y : [,5] Z R such tht y(t+1 > y(t for ll t [,4] T, ttins its minimum when nd F min = 5ln(1. y(t = 1t t 2, t [,5] Z, Proof. First we note tht mx{ϕ(t : t [,4] Z} = 9. Hence B + 4 k= ϕ(k = = 1 > 9 ϕ(t. 5 Oserving tht since, when T = Z, (t 2 = 2t + 1, we just hve to invoke Theorem 19 to get the desired result. Remrk 21. There is n inconsistency in [8, Theorem 3.6] due to the fct tht the ound on the functionl I considered there is not constnt. For exmple, let = A = 1, ϕ(x = x+1, nd ỹ(x = x for ll x [,1]. Then the hypotheses of [8, Theorem 3.6] re stisfied. Moreover, I(ỹ(x = 1 ln(ϕ(xỹ (xdx = [(x+1(ln(x+1 1] x=1 x= = 2ln(
According to [8, Theorem 3.6], the mximum of the functionl I is given y I mx = ln(c, where C = A ϕ(x dx. A simple clcultion shows tht C = ln(2. Hence I mx = ln(ln( Therefore, I(ỹ(x > I mx.
