Using these methods expliit expressions for the partile, energy and entropy density distributions are obtained, whih are found to be in agreement with the well known results of the relativisti formulation of Boltzmann s kineti theory. Expliit expressions for the total entropy, total energy and rest mass of the gas are obtained. The position of the enter of mass of the gas in equilibrium is found. The non-relativisti and ultrarelativisti approximations are also onsidered. The phase spae volume of the system is alulated expliitly in the ultrarelativisti approximation. 2 Introdution: The relativisti ideal gas in a gravitational field has been extensively studied using the relativisti Boltzmann equation [1,, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7]. This theory has found interesting appliations in astrophysis, osmology and nulear physis [6, 7]. General relativity is a loal theory. The relativisti Boltzmann distribution funtion too is defined loally. It is therefore not surprising that Boltzmann s kineti theory has been the method employed in the study of relativisti gases in gravitational fields. Gibbs s miroanonial formulation of statistial mehanis deals with systems of finite volumes and finite energies. To our knowledge, the methods of statistial mehanis, whih are based on the miroanonial formulation, have not been employed so far to hek the validity ofthe results oftherelativisti kineti theory foragasinthepresene ofagravitational field. It seems of interest to hek if both methods give the same results. In setion 1 we study a lassial relativisti ideal gas in thermodynami equilibrium in a uniformly aelerated referene frame using Gibbs s miroanonial and grand anonial formulations of statistial mehanis. In setion we ompare the results of setion 1 with the well known results of the relativisti kineti theory. We find omplete agreement. In setion 3 we show that the expressions for the partile, energy and entropy density distributions an be integrated and we obtain expliit expressions for the total entropy, total energy and rest mass of the gas. We also find the enter of mass of the system in equilibrium and derive the ondition for the relativisti gas to be in mehanial equilibrium in the uniformly aelerated frame. The non-relativisti approximation is onsidered in the first part of setion 4. The approximate expressions for the total energy and total entropy are found to be in agreement with known results for a lassial non-relativisti ideal gas in a uniform gravitational field. The ultrarelativisti approximation is studied in the seond part of setion 4. Expliit expressions are found in this ase using the miroanonial formalism. In partiular, the phase spae volume of the system an be found expliitly in this ase, whih allows a diret omparison between the results of the miroanonial and the grand anonial formulations. Setion 1: The miroanonial and grand anonial formulations Let us onsider a gas onsisting of a very large number N of idential indistinguishable strutureless partiles. Assume the partiles of the gas do not interat with eah other, exept for elasti ollisions among themselves and with the walls of the ontainer an ideal gas. Let us assume the gas to be adiabatially isolated: any hanges in the total internal energy an only be the result of a hange in the external parameters. We assume the ontainer is in uniformly aelerated motion along the z-diretion with respet to an inertial referene frame K, suh that the omponents of the four-vetor aeleration ẍ µ o µ =,1,,3 of the ontainer obey the ondition: ẍ o = η µν ẍ µ oẍ ν o = g <, 1 where g is a onstant, η µν = diag+1, 1, 1, 1 and is the speed of light. 1
For simpliity, we assume the ontainer to be a ylinder of base area A and height L. The axis of the ylinder is aligned along the z-diretion. In the loal referene frame K of the aelerated observer, with respet to whom the box is at rest, the metri tensor an be written as [8, 9] 1 : g µν = diag, 1, 1, 1. We assume the ylinder ontaining the gas is in a region within a distane g of the observer. In other words, we assume the ontainer is small enough and lose enough to the origin of the referene frame K that the metri is valid everywhere inside the ontainer. The Lagrangian for a system of N non-interating idential relativisti partiles in the non-inertial uniformly aelerated referene frame K an be written as: L = m N a=1 a v 1 a, 3 where va i i = 1,,3 are the omponents of the veloity of the ath partile in K, v a = vax +v ay +v az, and m is the mass of a partile. FromtheLagrangian3weanfindtheomponentsofthemomentumoftheathpartile: p ai = mv i a The Hamiltonian of the system an therefore be written as: N H = m a=1 1, 4 a v a a p a m 1, 5 where p a = p ax +p ay +p az. Let us assume the gas has reahed thermodynami equilibrium. It is assumed that any infinitesimally small portion of the fluid ontains a very large number of partiles. In the non-inertial referene frame K, where all the portions of the fluid are at rest, the total energy of the fluid an be written as: L E = A ǫzdz, 6 where ǫz an be interpreted as the energy density of the fluid measured with respet to K. In the instantaneous freely falling proper inertial frame K, in whih the fluid is also at rest, the total energy of the fluid an be written as follows: 1 In the non-relativisti limit this metri takes the form: g µν = diag, 1, 1, 1, whih is the expression for the metri desribing a uniform gravitational field in this approximation[8].
L L E = A ǫ z dz = A ǫ zdz, 7 where ǫ is the proper energy density energy per unit proper volume measured with respet to K. Notie that both referene frames K and K are at rest with respet to the fluid and with respet to eah other, and the metri tensor in K is of the form, therefore dx = dx, dy = dy and dz = dz. The dimensions of the ontainer are the same in both frames of referene. In K the partiles of the gas move in retilinear uniform motion in between ollisions as free partiles, while in K they are subjet to the effet of non-inertial fores. The two quantities ǫ and ǫ are related as follows: ǫ = ǫ. 8 The energy density ǫ of the gas measured with respet to K takes into aount the effet of the non-inertial fores on the partiles, while the proper energy density ǫ does not. In the non-inertial referene frame K, where all portions of the fluid are at rest, the omponents of the energy-momentum tensor of the fluid an be expressed as follows: ǫ T µν = diag,p,p,p, 9 where p is the pressure in the fluid a loal funtion of position in the fluid measured with respet to the instantaneous inertial rest frame K. Equating the ovariant derivative of the energy-momentum tensor to zero law of energymomentum onservation we obtain the ondition [1, 11] for the fluid to be in a state of mehanial equilibrium: dp dz = g ǫ +p. 1 In the miroanonial formalism, the number ΩE,N,g,A,L = DE,N,g,A,LδE of aessible mirostates of the system for a fixed number of partiles N and fixed external parameters g, A and L, and energy in the range E,E +δe an be found from the phase spae volume integral: ΦE,N,g,A,L =... N a=1 dx 1 dy 1 dz 1 dp 1x dp 1y dp 1z...dx N dy N dz N dp Nx dp Ny dp Nz a p a m 1 E m 11 as follows: 3
ΩE,N,g,A,L = 1 N!h 3N ΦE,N,g,A,L E N,g,A,L δe. 1 Thephasespaevolumeintegral11isthevolumeinphasespaeenlosedbythesurfae: N a 1 a=1 m p ax +p ay +p 1 az = E. m In 1, h is Plank s onstant and the N! aounts for the fat that the partiles of the gas are indistinguishable. From 11 we immediately find: ΦE,N,g,A,L = 4πA N N a=1 a... p 1...p N dz 1...dz N dp 1...dp N p a m 1 E m. 13 Assuming that the number of partiles N is very large N! πn N N e Stirling s approximation, the entropy of the isolated system in thermodynami equilibrium an be found from 1 and 13 as: S = klnωe,n,g,a,l, 14 where k is Boltzmann s onstant. Thequantities T andµanbefoundfromthepartialderivatives oftheentropy asfollows: 1 S T = E µ T = S N N,g,A,L, E,g,A,L Let us onsider a layer of the fluid of area A at a height z. This is an open subsystem. For this portion of the gas we an write the grand anonial partition funtion: Z = = = N= N= e µn e µn N= Adz N h 3N N! Adz N h 3N N!... 4π 1 e µ m 4πAdz N! h = exp e µ m 4πAdz h N e a=1 m p a m 1 d 3 p 1...d 3 p N e m 1 N p m p dp N e azx 1 x dx e azx x 1 dx, 17
where: We notie that: az = m. 18 e ax 1 x dx = 1 u u 1e au du = K a, 19 a where K is the modified Bessel funtion [1, 13]. From 17, 18 and 19 we finally obtain the grand anonial partition funtion for the relativisti ideal gas: Z = exp e µ m 3 K m 4πAdz. h m The grand anonial potential per unit volume in K, an be found diretly from : ω = ke µ m 3 K m 4π h m. 1 From 1 the entropy density s entropy per unit volume and the partile density n number of partiles per unit volume an be found using the equations: Using the thermodynami identity: ω s = T ω n = µ g,µ g,t,. 3 ω = ǫ Ts µn, 4 and expressing µ in terms of the partile density n at the bottom of the ontainer, we obtain from1,, 3 and4 the partile density, entropy density, and energy density equilibrium distributions: sz = nzk ln 4πe nz m h m nz = n K m, 5 K 3 K m m 5 m K m K m, 6
ǫz = nz 1 m K m K m, 7 where z L we assume the origin of the referene frame K to be at the bottom of the ontainer. The pressure in K an be found diretly from the expression of the grand anonial potential per unit volume as follows: p = ω = nz 8 From 7 and 8 we find the proper energy density as a funtion of z: ǫ z = nz 1 m K m K m. 9 Substituting 9 into 1, we an solve the differential equation for the pressure p in K to obtain: p z = nz. 3 The thermodynami relations between ǫ, n, s, p andthe loal temperature T measured in the instantaneous inertial frame K for a layer of gas in equilibrium at height z an be found from the grand anonial partition funtion in the inertial frame: Z = N= = exp e µ zn AdzN z h 3N N! e µ z... N e m z a=1 p a m 1 d 3 p 1...d3 p N z m 3 K m 4πAdz z. 31 h m z As before, we an find s and n from the equations: where ω an be found from 31: ω = ke µ 4π ω s =, 3 T µ ω n =. 33 µ T m h 6 3 K m. 34 m
Finally, using the thermodynami identity: and the relation: ω = ǫ T s µ n, 35 ω = p, 36 for a relativisti ideal gas in the inertial frame K, in the absene of external fores, one finds the Juttner relations [14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, ]: s = n k ln m ǫ = p 1 m K K m 4πe n m h. 37 p = n 38 3 K m m m m K K m Comparing 37, 38 and 39 with 9, 3 and 6 we obtain: T z =, 39 T, 4 n = n, 41 s = s. 4 Equations 41 and 4 an also be obtained by notiing that the number of partiles and the entropy are invariant quantities have the same values both in K and K and the volumes in K and K are the same as noted above. Equation 4 is the well known Tolman relation [1, 9] T g = T = onst between the loal temperature T z measured with respet to the inertial frame K and the onstant T defined in the non-inertial frame K. We have arrived at 4 using the methods of statistial mehanis. Setion : The relativisti kineti theory One an also obtain Eqs. 5-7 from the kineti theory, using the relativisti Boltzmann equation [1,, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7]. In the non-inertial uniformly aelerated referene frame K, the relativisti Boltzmann equation an be written as follows: 7
f t, r, p + t = 1 h 3 m 1 p m p 1 f t, r, p mg p f t, r, p r m p z ω r; p, p 1 ; p, p 1 f t, r, p f t, r, p 1 f t, r, pf t, r, p1 d 3 p 1 d 3 pd 3 p 1. The right hand side of the relativisti Boltzmann equation 43 is the ollision integral. It gives the rate of hange, due to ollisions, in the mean number of partiles in the phase spae volume dxdydzdp x dp y dp z. The left hand side of 43 is df = f + {f,h}, where {,} dt t is a Poisson braket. The partiular expression in the left hand side of 43 is obtained by inserting the Hamiltonian 5 in the Poisson braket. For elasti ollisions: p m 1 + p 1 m 43 p+ p 1 = p+ p 1, 44 1 = p m 1 + p 1 m The mean number of partiles per unit volume is given by the equation: In equilibrium: nt, r = 1 h f t, r, pd 3 p. 46 f eq t =, 47 f eq r, p f eq r, p 1 = feq r, pf eq r, p In Eq 48 it is assumed that the initial and final momenta obey the onditions 44, 45. In our ase, due to the symmetry of the problem onsidered, we also have the following onditions on f eq : f eq x = f eq y =. 49 From 43, we obtain that the distribution funtion f eq satisfies the equation: pz m 1 p m f eq z, p z mg 1 p f eq z, p =. 5 m p z The solution of 5, whih also satisfies the ondition 48 assuming 44, 45, an be written as: 8
f eq z, p = αe βm p m 1, 51 where α and β are onstants. Substituting 51 into 46 and performing the integration we obtain: nz = 4παm β K βm. 5 In terms of the partile density at the bottom of the ontainer we obtain: nz = n K βm The energy density ǫz in K an be derived from the relation: ǫz = 1 h 3 K βm. 53 m 1 p feq z, pd 3 p 54 m Substituting 51 into 54, taking into aount 5, and performing the integration we obtain: ǫz = nz β 1 βm K βm 55 K βm Finally, we an obtain the entropy density from the relation []: sz = k e f h 3 eq ln d 3 p. 56 f eq Substituting 51 into 56, taking into aount 5, and performing the integration we obtain: sz = nzk ln 4πe nz m 3 K βm h βm Comparing 53, 54, 57 with 5-7 we find the onstant β: βm K βm, K βm β = Setion 3: Global quantities The density of partiles at the bottom of the ontainer n an be related to the total number of partiles in the system N by diret integration of 5: 57 9
L N = A nzdz = An K m g al a where we used the relation: K u u K u u = d du An du = K m K1 u u [1, 13]. mg m K 1 K 1 gl, gl The total energy of the system E in K an be found by substituting 5 and 59 into 7 and performing the integration 6: m 59 m m K K E = N +Nm gl m K K m 1 gl. 6 1 gl Similarly, substituting 5 and 59 into 6, and integrating, we obtain the total entropy of the gas: S = Nkln A m 3 m N 4πe K h m 1 K m 1 gl g gl m m + Nm K K gl T m K K m 1 gl gl The total energy of the system E in K an be found by substituting 5 and 59 into 9 and performing the integration 7: E = Nm K m K 1 m m K gl K 1 m gl gl. 6 gl E given by Eq6 is the proper energy of the gas. The position of the enter of mass of the gas with respet to the inertial frame K an be determined by the equation [3]: A L zǫ zdz z.m. = 63 E The integration in 63 an be easily arried out and using 6 and 6 one finds that: M.m. = E E. 64 1
where the rest mass M of the fluid is defined as: M = E 65 From 65, 6, 8, 5 and 59, we notie that: Mg = Ap pl. 66 The above equation an be interpreted as the ondition in K for the objet to be in stati mehanial equilibrium: the net fore exerted by the walls of the ontainer on the gas as a whole equals its weight. Notie that in the non-inertial referene frame K the net fore exerted on the gas by the side walls of the ylinder is equal to zero. Setion 4: The non-relativisti and ultrarelativisti approximations The non-relativisti approximation. In the non-relativisti limit m we an use the expressions for the asymptotis of the modified Bessel funtions [1]: π K ν z z e z 4ν 1, 67 8z for ν = 1, in 6 and 61 to obtain the non-relativisti expressions for the total energy and total entropy of the gas: E = Nm + 5 S = Nk 1 mgl 1 mgl e 1 +Nkln A N NmgL N, mgl 68 e 1 πm 3 e 5 h 3 mg 1 e mgl. 69 Equations 68 and 69 are in perfet agreement with the results for the non-relativisti lassial ideal gas in a uniform gravitational field obtained in [4]. In the non-relativisti limit, where 1 p a m p a m, the integration in 13 an also be arried out and assuming E > Nm +NmgL we obtain results in agreement with [5]. The ultrarelativisti approximation. In the ultrarelativisti approximation, where 1 p a m an be arried out expliitly and assuming E > Nm gl we obtain: pa, the integration in 13 m N ΦE,N,g,A,L = 1 4πA 3N! g E3 1 1 gl. 7 11
From 7, 1 and 14, using Stirling s approximation, we obtain a formula for the entropy of an ultrarelativisti ideal gas in thermodynami equilibrium in a uniformly aelerated referene frame: S = Nkln 4πe4 A gh 3 N E 3 1 3N 1 gl. 71 In the ultrarelativisti limit m we an use the approximate expressions [1, 13] for the modified Bessel funtions as z : K ν z Γν for ν = 1,, in 6 and 61 to obtain: z ν 7 E = 3N 73 S = Nkln 4πe4 A 1 gh 3 N 3 1 gl. 74 Combining Eqs. 74 and 73 we obtain 71, whih shows that the miroanonial and the grand anonial formalisms give idential results in the ultrarelativisti approximation. In this paper we have onsidered the ase of anideal gasin a uniformly aelerated frame. The relativisti kineti theory is appliable in the more general ase of a gas in a stationary gravitational field. It would be of interest to generalize the results obtained here to find the miroanonial and grand anonial formulations for the gas in a stationary gravitational field. Referenes [1] G.E.
