The ontrol systems erformane is omliated by the numerator dynamis (resene of a zero) of the roess. Several roesses exhibit seond order lus time delay system with a zero transfer funtion model. Examles for suh roesses are jaketed CSTR [1], distillation olumn [], autoatalyti CSTR [3] and rystallizer [4]. Many reyle roesses where energy and mass reyle takes lae are reresented by SOPTZ transfer funtion model []. Very limited methods of designing P ontrollers for unstable SOPTZ systems are available in the literature. They are MC method [5] and synthesis method [6]. n the synthesis method [6], losedloo transfer funtion is assumed. From the losedloo transfer funtion, ontroller transfer funtion is derived using roess transfer funtion. Later ontroller transfer funtion is written as P ontroller with a lead lag filter. n the MC method [5], the P ontrollers are designed for unstable FOPT and SOPT systems with and without a zero from MC filter using Malaurin series exansion. * Corresonding author; advan@rediffmail.om Reeived 4 May Chaoyang University of Tehnology, SSN Revised July 011 Aeted 9 Setember 011 nt. 2 . rishna,. Suryanarayana, G. Aarna, and R. Padma Sree n the resent work, a simle method for designing P ontrollers based on internal model ontrol riniles and stability analysis is roosed. The P tuning arameters are given as funtion of roess model arameters. Simulation results for various transfer funtion models and nonlinear models are given to show the effiieny of the roosed ontrollers.. Proosed methods.1. nternal model ontrol (MC) method The roess transfer funtion for SOPT with a negative zero is given by Ls (1 + s) e G ( 1s + 1)( s 1) (1) Using Pade s aroximation for the time (1 0.5Ls) delay e Ls, the roess transfer ( Ls) funtion in Eq (1) is written as, (1 + s)(1 0.5Ls) G ( 1s + 1)( s 1)( Ls) () The roess transfer funtion is written as + G G GP (3) Where G + P (s) is invertible art and G - P (s) is noninvertible art. Therefore, the invertible art of the roess transfer funtion in Eq () + (1 + s) isgp (4) ( 1s + 1)( s 1)( Ls) The MC ontroller for this system is given + 1 as, Q [ GP ]. f (5) Where f is MC filter. t onsists of both numerator and denominator dynamis. The order of the numerator is equal to the number of unstable oles of the roess. The order of denominator is seleted in suh a way to make ontroller realizable (the ontroller numerator order should be less than or equal to that of the order of denominator). Therefore MC filter for this transfer funtion model is ηs + 1 given by f 3 ( λs + 1) (6) Using Eq (4) and Eq (6) in Eq (5), MC ontroller is given by ( Ls)( 1s + 1)( s 1)( ηs + 1) Q 3 P (1 + s)( λs + 1) (7) Where λ is MC filter time onstant, is a tuning arameter. The equivalent P ontroller is obtained by using the following equation, Q G (1 GP Q) (8) Substituting Eq () and Eq (7) in the above equation, the following transfer funtion model for the ontroller is obtained. ( Ls)( 1s + 1)( s 1)( ηs + 1) G (9) 3 (1 + s)[( λs + 1) (1 0.5Ls)( ηs + 1)] Eq (9) an be rearranged into the following form, 1 (1 + α0s) G [1 + + s] (10) s ( α1s + αs + 1) This is a P ontroller with a lead lag filter Where, 1 + η ( η 3λ 0.5L) (11) ( 1 + η) (1) 1η ( 1 + η) (13) 3 λ + (3λ + 0.5L) + 3λ η ( 0.5L ) (14) α 0.5L 0 (15) 3 λ α 1 ( η 3λ 0.5L) (16) 3 λ α + (17) ( η 3λ 0.5L) λ is seleted by trial and error roedure. f the value of λ is large, the resonse is sluggish but robust and if it is small the resonse is fast but less robust. f time delay is small, the time delay is aroximated as e Ls 1 Ls, the invertible art of the roess transfer funtion of Eq (1) nt. 3 Tuning of P Controllers for Unstable Continuous Stirred Tank Reators isg + P (1 + s) ( 1s + 1)( s 1) (18) The MC ontroller for the given transfer funtion is given in Eq (5). Therefore, MC ηs + 1 filter f is given by f (19) ( λs + 1) Using Eq (18) and Eq (19) in Eq (5), MC ontroller is given by ( 1s + 1)( s 1)( ηs + 1) Q (0) P (1 + s)( λs + 1) Substituting Eq (1) and Eq (0) in Eq (8), the following transfer funtion model for the ontroller is obtained. ( 1s + 1)( s 1)( ηs + 1) G (1) (1 + s)[( λs + 1) (1 Ls)( ηs + 1)] Eq (1) is rearranged into P ontroller with a first order lag filter. 1 1 G [1 + + s] () s ( s + 1) f Where, 1 + η ( η λ L) (3) ( 1 + η) (4) 1η + η) (5) ( 1 (6) f λ + (λ + L) η (7) L.. Stability analysis method The roess transfer funtion for unstable SOPT with a negative zero is given by Eq (1). The transfer funtion of the ontroller is given by 1 1 G (1 + )(1 + s)( ) (8) s αs + 1 The ombined transfer funtion model of the roess and the ontroller is given by G G Ls P (1 + s) e 1 1 (1 + )(1 + )( ) s ( 1 s + 1)( s 1) s αs + 1 (9) Let 1 and α, then Eq (9) is written as 1 Ls (1 + ) e s G G s 1 (30) 5 Where ω is rossover frequeny and ω is given by. Phase angle riteria for oenloo transfer funtion [Eq (30)] is given by tan ( ) L ω + tan ( ω ) 0 (31) ω 1 1 tan ( 0.) L ω + tan ( ω ) 0 (3) Eq (3) is solved by using fsolve of MATLAB forω. Using amlitude riteria, is given by k 1+ ω 1 1+ ( ) ω k 1+ ω 1+ (0.) (33) Eq (8) is omared with the onventional P ontroller with a lag filter [Eq ()] and the onventional P settings are given by ( + ) (34) + (35) + (36) α (37) nt. J. Al. Si. Eng., , 1 3
