During nine week in 8 and 9, a 9GeV/c proton beam impinging on a liquid hydrogen target wa ued in order to tudy the production o exotic meon and glueball candidate at central rapiditie. A no bia on the production mechanim wa introduced by the trigger ytem, the contribution rom diractive diociation o the beam proton poe a challenge. We elect a centrally produced ample by kinematic cut and introduce a model to decribe the data in term o partial wave. 2 PartialWave Analyi o the Centrally Produced Sytem in pp Reaction at COMPASS Tobia Schlüter. Introduction Quantum Chromodynamic predict object compoed entirely o valence gluon, ocalled glueball. Their exitence, however, could not be conirmed experimentally to the preent day. One o the goal o the COMPASS experiment [] at CERN i to tudy the exitence and ignature o glueball, in continuation o the eort that were made at the CERN Omega pectrometer in the late 99 []. Since Pomeron are conidered to have no valence quark contribution, Pomeron Pomeron uion wa propoed to be well uited or the production o glueball. Thi proce can be realied in a ixedtarget experiment by the cattering o a proton beam on a proton target, where a ytem o particle i produced centrally (c. Figure ). Event / COMPASS 9 p p p p M(pπ) >. /. GeV/c... p p x F Figure : Central production Figure : Feynman x F ditribution Approximately % o the total COMPASS data recorded with a 9 GeV/c proton beam impinging on a liquid hydrogen target wa ued or the preented analyi. In order to eparate the central ytem rom the at proton p, a cut on the invariant ma combination M(pπ) >.GeV/c wa introduced. The eect o thi kinematic cut on the Feynman x F ditribution or the at (yellow) and the low proton (red) a well a the dipion ytem (blue) i hown in Figure. The ytem lie within x F. and can thereore be conidered a centrally produced. However, central production comprie everal production procee, their characteritic ignature being the dierent dependence o the cro ection on the centreoma energy o the reaction. While PomeronPomeron cattering hould be only weakly dependent on, Pomeron Reggeon cattering i predicted to cale with / and ReggeonReggeon cattering with / []. Thi behaviour can be oberved experimentally, e.g. by comparing the ma pectra obtained at COMPASS energy to thoe the Omega pectrometer [4] obtained at dierent energie (c. Figure ). The dominant eature o the invariant ma ditribution, the ρ(77), the (7) and the harp drop in intenity in the vicinity o the (98), can be oberved at all three dierent centreoma energie. The relative yield o ρproduction decreaed rapidly with increaing, which i explained by a Reggeied pionpion contribution ( / ). On the the other hand, the enhancement at low mae a well a the (98) remain practically unchanged, a act that i characteritic or independent PomeronPomeron cattering.

PartialWave Analyi The partialwave analyi ha been perormed auming that the ytem i produced by the colliion o two particle emitted by the cattered proton. They are alo reerred to a exchanged particle, and carry the quared ourmomentum traner t rom the beam proton and t rom the target proton, repectively. We make the trong aumption that t only tranmit the helicity λ =. In thi limit, t can be een a a vacuumlike Pomeron with J PC = ++, which i treated like an external particle. The beam and the at outgoing proton p are irrelevant in thi picture. I we accept the pacelike Pomeron a the incoming beam, we can contruct a GottriedJackon rame [] or the dipion ytem. Hence, the exchanged particle t in the centreoma rame o the ytem deine the zaxi or the reaction. We have to emphaie that we ixed the choice to t in contrat to previou experiment (e.g. [6]) to be able to correct or the dierent t acceptance o the trigger. The yaxi o the righthanded coordinate ytem i deined by the cro product o the momentum vector o the two exchange particle in the pp centreoma. Two variable peciy the decay proce, namely the polar and azimuthal angle (co(θ),φ) o the π in the dipion centreoma rame relative to thee axe. Figure 4 illutrate the ditribution o thee decay variable a a unction o the dipion ma. The decay amplitude or a twopeudocalar ytem with relative angular momentum l and it projection on the quantiation axi m i given by the pherical harmonic Ym(θ,φ) l in pherical coordinate. To proit rom the act that the trong interaction conerve parity, a relection operator wa introduced in [7] a a parity operator ollowed by a rotation around the yaxi uch that all momenta relevant to the production proce are recovered. Introducing a quantum number ε which i called relectivity and which can have the value ±, the eigentate o thi relection operator can be contructed a: ] Ym εl (θ,φ) c m [Y m(θ,φ) l ε( ) m Y m(θ,φ) l (.) with a normaliation contant c m. The two clae o tate ε = ± correpond to dierent production procee in the aymptotic limit [] and can conequently not interere.

Since the overall phae or each relectivity i indeterminate, one wave in each cla can be deined real, which mean the imaginary part o that tranition amplitude i ixed to zero. Thee ocalled anchor wave are emphaied in bold ont. An extended likelihood it in MeV/c ma bin i ued to ind the parameter T εlm, uch that the acceptance corrected model I(θ,φ) matche the meaured data bet. (.). Ambiguitie A hown in [8, 9], the angular dependency o the intenity I(Ω) or twopeudocalar inal tate can generally be expreed in term o G(u) by the introduction o a variable u tan(θ/). The unction G(u) i a complex polynomial o the order o l, where l i the the highet conidered pin in the ytem. Thi polynomial can be actoried in term o it complex root u k, the ocalled Barreletzero []. Since the unction G(u) only enter a abolute quare in the expreion or the angular ditribution, the complex conjugate o a root u k i an equally valid olution. That mean, that there are in general l dierent ambiguou olution which reult in exactly the ame angular ditribution. Thi ambiguity ha to be reolved by phyical argument. The ytem o S, P and D wave ued in the preented analyi ha eight ambiguou olution. By uing dierent random tarting value or the it to the ame data and MC ample, it wa hown experimentally that very dierent olution can be obtained. However, the itted production amplitude T εlm or one ingle attempt can be ued to calculate all eight olution analytically [9]. In order to ind the complex polynomial root numerically, Laguerre method wa applied. Figure illutrate the real and imaginary part o thee our root or all ma bin, where a orting depending on the real part ha been perormed. They are well eparated rom each other and do not require 4

The projected angular ditribution how very good agreement with the data. 4. Outlook With thee proceeding, we want to how that we are able to elect a centrally produced ample and decribe the main eature o the data in term o partial wave. Uing the method rom [6], we can reproduce the analyi with comparable reult. The complicated problem o central production wa approached ollowing a model employed by WA, an earlier experiment at CERN, inheriting ome limitation and aumption. In the meantime, other idea were developed baed on their data and analye which can help to determine pin and parity o particle produced in central excluive procee []. In addition to meauring the decay product, it can have particular advantage to tudy angular correlation between the outgoing proton. In the long run, we might tudy the data with a combination o both. In order to obtain a complete picture o the light calar meon ector, the decay o identiied reonance into dierent inal tate i needed to undertand their compoition. Since the trigger wa not electing a particular inal tate and the generaliation o the analyi o the twopion ytem to other twopeudocalar inal tate i trivial, the next natural tep will be the analyi o the K + K ytem. Other available channel are K K, π π and ηη. We expect that COMPASS will be able to hed light on thi ector, outperorming previou experiment in term o data a well a reolution.
