ANALYTICAL STUDY OF LOW TEMPERATURE PHASE OF 3D LGT IN THE PLAQUETTE FORMULATION arxiv:hep-at/ v1 28 Apr 2002 OLEG BORISENKO, SERGEI VOLOSHIN Institute for Theoretica Physics, Urainian Academy of Sciences, Kiev, Uraine AND MANFRIED FABER Atominstitut der österreichischen Universitäten, Arbeitsgruppe Kernphysi, TU Wien, A 1040 Vienna, Austria Abstract. We deveop an anaytica approach for non-abeian gauge modes within the paquette representation where the paquette matrices pay the roe of the fundamenta degrees of freedom. We start from the origina Batrouni formuation and show how it can be modified in such a way that each non-abeian Bianchi identity contains two connectors instead of four. Using this representation we construct the ow-temperature epansion for U(1 and SU(N modes on a finite attice and discuss its uniformity in the voume. Net, we derive a dua representation for the t Hooft oop in the SU(2 mode and describe monopoes in the maima aia gauge. 1. Paquette formuation Lattice gauge theory (LGT can be formuated in many equivaent ways. The origina Wison formuation is given in terms of group vaued matrices on ins as fundamenta degrees of freedom [1]. The partition function reads Z = DU ep{ βs[u µ (]}, (1 where S is the standard Wison action and the integra is cacuated over the Haar measure on the group at every in of the attice. Severa years ater Presented by O. Boriseno at the NATO Advanced Research Worshop Confinement, Topoogy, and other Non-Perturbative Aspects of QCD, anuary 21 27, 2002, Stará Lesná, Sovaia.
2 the dua representation for abeian LGT s was constructed in [2]. Etensions to nonabeian groups have been proposed in ninetees in [3]-[4]. A cosey reated approach is so-caed paquette representation invented in the continuum theory by M. Hapern [5] and etended to the attice modes in [6]. In this representation the paquette matrices pay the roe of the dynamica degrees of freedom and satisfy certain constraints epressed through Bianchi identities. Both dua and paquette formuations are not so popuar in the case of nonabeian modes, probaby due to their compeity. In the nonabeian case above mentioned constraints appear to be highy-nonoca and this fact maes an anaytica study of the mode rather difficut. In spite of this compeity the paquette formuation has certain advantages over the standard one [6]: duaity transformations, Couomb-gas representation, strong couping epansion and mean-fied approimation oo more natura and simper in the paquette formuation. Nevertheess we beieve the main advantage of this formuation ies in its appications to the ow-temperature region. Let V p be a paquette matri in SU(N LGT. The rigorous resut of [7] asserts that the probabiity p(ξ that Tr(I V p ξ is bounded by p(ξ O(e bβξ, β, b = const (2 uniformy in the voume. Thus, a configurations with ξ O(β 1 are eponentiay suppressed. The Gibbs measure at arge β is strongy concentrated around configurations on which V p I. This property justifies epansion of paquette matrices around unity when β is sufficienty arge. This is our first motivation to construct a ow-temperature epansion of gauge modes using the paquette formuation. The we-nown probem of the standard perturbation theory (PT can be shorty formuated as foows. When the voume is fied, and in the compete aia gauge the in matrices perform sma fuctuations around the unit matri and the PT wors very we producing the asymptotic epansion in inverse powers of β. However, in the thermodynamic imit (TL system deviates arbitrariy far from the ordered state, no sadde point eists anymore and configurations of in matrices are distributed uniformy in the group space. That there are probems with the conventiona PT was proven in [8], where it was shown the PT resuts depend on the boundary conditions (BC used to reach the TL. A this rises the question whether PT gives asymptotic epansion uniformy vaid in the voume. Fortunatey, even in the TL the paquette matrices are cose to unity, the inequaity (2 hods and thus provides a basis for the construction of the ow-temperature epansion. Our net motivation is to derive the dua representation of nonabeian modes which coud be used for their anaytica study. Here we formuate such representation for SU(2 LGT and compute dua form of the t Hooft oop. We aso describe monopoes of the maima aia gauge.
Now we outine the derivation of our paquette formuation (a technica detais wi be given in a forthcoming pubication [9]. Consider a 3D attice with free BC on the in gauge matrices. We mae a change of variabes in the partition function (1 V p = U µ (U ν ( + µu µ( + νu ν(. The partition function gets the form [ Z = dv p ep β p (V p = du δ p p V p Re TrV p ] (V p, (3 3 U I = (V c. (4 p c The ast equations are rather forma, for we have to specify the order of mutipication of nonabeian matrices. To do that we define in a cube a verte A and separated by the space diagona a verte B, see Fig.1. This assignment we etend for a neighbouring cubes and finay for the whoe attice. The paquette matrices V p we insert at the vertices A or B of each paquette attached to A or B, correspondingy. Net, tae a path connecting vertices A and B by three ins, as shown in Fig.1. Then the matri V c entering the Bianchi identity for the cube c is of the form [ ] V c = ep iσ ω (c = p AV p C V p C, C = U 1 U 2 U 3. (5 p B p (A,B means an appropriatey ordered product over three paquettes of the cube attached to the verte A or B. The matri C defines a parae transport of verte B into verte A and is caed connector. The connector C pays a crucia roe in the nonabeian Bianchi identity. Its path can, in principe be chosen in an arbitrary way but the possibe choices of p A, p B and C must fit together. We choose the structure of connectors as shown in Fig.1. As is seen from Fig.1 there are four types of eementary B 6 B 7 1 X Z 3 2 Y B 5 B 2 A B 8 B 3 B 1 B 4 Figure 1. Structure of connectors on the attice.
4 cubes with different types of connector pathes. The net steps in the derivation are as foows: I. Map one of the space-ie paquette deta s to a deta-function for the cube (V c with V c given in (5. II. Choose the maima aia gauge in the form U 3 (,y,z = U 2 (,y,0 = U 1 (,0,0 = I. (6 To simpify connectors one can fi the Dirichet BC in the pane z = 0. III. Integrate out a in variabes foowing [6]. In what foows we pass to the dua attice where cubes become sites and so on. The partition function taes the form Z = dv ep[β Re TrV ] 4 i=1 (i ( V (i, (7 where (i (i runs over a sites with i-th type of connector pathes and (V is an SU(N deta-function given by (V = r d r χ r (V, (8 where the sum over r is a sum over a representations of SU(N, χ r is character of r-th representation and d r = χ r (I. To write down eact epressions we choose coordinate system on the dua attice as in Fig.1. Then, e.g. the connector for the cube B 1 A is C (1 = V (1 = V 5 V 1 V 6 C (1 V 2 V 3 V 4 C (1, (9 1 =z i 1 z i 1 V n2 ( i,y i 1, V n1 ( i 1,y i,p. (10 p=1 2. Low-temperature epansion In this section we construct the ow-temperature epansion of gauge modes in the paquette formuation. In doing this we foow the strategy deveoped for the two-dimensiona principa chira modes in [10]. The wea-couping epansion in both modes bears many common features. In the abeian case they turn out to be practicay identica, whie the ony, but essentia difference in the nonabeian case is the appearence of connectors in gauge modes. The attice PT in tempora gauge (U 0 = I was constructed for abeian and nonabeian modes in the standard Wison formuation by F. Müer and
W. Rüh [11]. In this gauge the PT for nonabeian modes dispays serious infrared divergences in separate terms of the epansion starting from the order O(β 2 for Wison oops and from O(β 1 for the free energy. Athough it is epected that a divergences are canceed in gauge invariant quantities, we are not aware of any proof of the infrared finitness at higher orders of the epansion. Here we outine the ow-temperature epansion for SU(2 LGT (a detais and etension to other groups wi be given in [9]. We want to epand the partition and correation functions into asymptotic series whose coefficients are cacuated over certain Gaussian measure. Let us consider the standard parameterization for the SU(2 in matri V = ep[iσ ω (], where σ, = 1,2,3 are Paui matrices and introduce [ 1/2 [ 1/2 W = ω(] 2, W = ω(] 2, (11 where ω ( is a site ange defined in (5 and has the standard epansion ω ( = ω (0 ( + ω(1 ( + ω(2 ( + in powers of in anges. The first coefficient can be written down as ω (0 ( = ω ( 4 + ω ( 5 + ω ( 6 ω ( 1 ω ( 2 ω ( 3. (12 ( for i 1 can be computed by maing repeated use of the Campbe- Baer-Hausdorff formua. Then, the partition function (7 can be eacty rewritten to the foowing form [10] [ sin 2 ] [ W Z SU(2 = W 2 dω ( ep 2β ] W cos W sin W [ dα (ep i ] α (ω ( + 2πim(α(, (13 ω (i m(= where α( = ( α2 (1/2. In derivation of this representation we have used the Poisson formua. In order to perform the wea couping epansion we mae the substitution ω ( (2β 1/2 ω (, α ( (2β 1/2 α ( and then epand the integrand of (13 in powers of fuctuations of the in fieds. Introduce eterna sources h ( couped to the in fied ω ( and s ( couped to the auiiary fied α (. Then one can get the foowing epansion [ ] 1 Z = 1 + β B ( h, s M(h,s, (14 =1 where B are nown operators. Up to eponentiay sma terms the generating functiona M(h,s is given by [ 1 ep 4 s (G, s ( + i 2 s (D (h ( + 1 ] 4 h (G h (, (15 5
6 where we introduced in Green functions G and D ( defined as G = 2δ, G, G +n, +n + G, +n + G +n,, (16 D ( = G, G +n,. (17 These formuae aow us to cacuate the wea couping epansion of both the free energy and any fied-distance observabe. Etension of this epansion for SU(N LGT and for the Wison oop and other observabes is straightforward. Let us give some comments on the property of the epansion and on the infrared probem. One proves that the probabiity that K ins have arge fuctuations ie ω ( O( β is suppressed as O(e constkπ2β, C is a constant. It shows that arge fuctuations are under good contro since they are eponentiay suppressed with β, and this obviousy remains true in the TL. This property is very essentia achievement of the epansion in the paquette representation. No such contro eists for the arge fuctuations of the in gauge matrices in the TL. It foows from the definition of the in Green function (16 that G 4/3. Hence, with respect to the Gaussian measure fuctuations of in variabes are bounded ie ω ω G = 1 2 G const R 3. (18 This property justifies the ow-temperature epansion in powers of fuctuations of in (paquette variabes, whie there is no such justification for the epansion in terms of the origina in variabes the fuctuations of which are not bounded when L. As is seen from the generating functiona (15 it depends ony on infrared finite Green functions: in Green functions are infrared finite by construction, whie the Green function for the free scaar fied is finite in any dimension D 3. In spite of a these nice properties, it is far from obvious that the epansion is uniformy vaid in the voume. The probem appears in the foowing way. In [9] we compute the first coefficient of the free energy epansion and prove that it coincides with the standard answer. Nevertheess, that computations show ceary that the source of the troubes are the connectors of the nonabeian Bianchi identities. The ow-temperature epansion starts from the abeian Bianchi identity for every cube and goes towards gradua restoration of the fu identity with every order of the epansion. Thus, the generating functiona contains an abeianized form of the identity without connectors. High-order terms incude an epansion of connectors which ead to appearence of infrared divergent terms. Consider, for eampe the term α (ω 1( O(1/ β in the eponent of (13. ω 1 ( incudes the foowing contributions from connectors ǫ mn (ω m ( 1 + ω m ( 2 +
ω m ( 3 C ω n(, where sum over etends over a ins beonging to the connector C. For any finite L one can aways find such arge β that this sum is of the order O(1/ β. In the wea couping epansion such terms are treated as perturbations and shoud be epanded. These terms are not infrared finite. And even though the fina resut is infrared finite it is not obvious that such terms may be considered as perturbation in the TL. Indeed, in the infinite voume imit practicay a connectors become infinitey ong, therefore it is not cear if the ast sum is propery bounded in this imit and may be epanded perturbativey. 3. Dua representation, t Hooft oop and monopoes In this section we give the dua form of SU(2 LGT which can be obtained from the paquette formuation. Let be a site dua to the cube of the origina attice and be a in dua to the paquette of the origina attice. Then it foows from (7, (8 and from the epression for the acobian that in the case of the SU(2 gauge group the partition function on the dua attice can be written in the foowing form r Z = (2r + 1 Ξ. (19 r =0, 1 2,1,... m i (= r The summation over r corresponds to the summation over a irreducibe representations of the SU(2 group. The sums over magnetic numbers m i ( correspond to the cacuation of SU(2 traces. The inde i may run from 6 to 6 + 3L depending on the position of the origina cube, L is the inear etent of the attice. The in integra Ξ is given by Ξ = dv e βtrv V m 1n 1 r V m 2n 2 r +n M( i=1 ( V i i+1 r i V p ip i+1 r i 7, (20 where Vr mn is a matri eement of r-th representation. The integer number M( depends on the position of the paquette on the attice and shows how many times a dua in serves as connector in the Bianchi identities. Consider now the t Hooft ine which in 3D consists of a string S y of dua ins between sites and y on the dua attice. With the set T of paquettes dua to the string S y we define the action S z (U;T = β p/ T ReTrU p + β p T ReTrzU p (21 and the corresponding partition function Z(z;S y with action (21. Here z is center eement of SU(N. By a change of variabes V z V for S y
8 we get the foowing representation for the partition function Z(z;S y Z(z;S y = dv ep[β ( (1,y Re TrV ] V (1 ( 3 i=1 zv (1 (i ( ( V (i zv (1 y, (22 since z cances from a Bianchi constraints but those for the endpoints. Therefore, one can say that the Bianchi constraint is vioated at these endpoints. It foows from these epressions that in the ensembe defined by the partition function (19 the disorder operator becomes particuary simpe D z (S y = Z(z;S y Z(1;S y = ep[2iπ(r r y ]. (23 Comparing this epression with the partition function (13 and remembering that r is just the radia component of the auiiary fied α ( we concude that introducing sources ie r r y amounts to a simpe shift in the corresponding sites for the integers m in (13. Therefore, we may interpret the summation over m as summation over monopoe configurations which appear due to the periodicity of SU(2 deta-function (in cose anaogy with U(1 mode. Indeed, epressed in terms of eements of agebra the Bianchi identity reads ( ω2 (1/2 = 2πm. Configurations m 0 we term monopoes of the maima aia gauge. Investigation of these configurations and their contribution to the Wison oops wi be presented in a separate pubication. References 1. Wison, K.G., (1974 Phys.Rev.
