1 Transport and Helfand oents in the Lennard-Jones fluid. II. Theral conductivity arxiv:cond-at/7125v1 [cond-at.stat-ech] 11 Jan 27 S. Viscardy, J. Servantie, and P. Gaspard Center for Nonlinear Phenoena and Coplex Systes, Université Libre de Bruxelles, Capus Plaine, Code Postal 231, B-15 Brussels, Belgiu The theral conductivity is calculated with the Helfand-oent ethod in the Lennard-Jones fluid near the triple point. The Helfand oent of theral conductivity is here derived for olecular dynaics with periodic boundary conditions. Theral conductivity is given by a generalized Einstein relation with this Helfand oent. We copute theral conductivity by this new ethod and copare it with our own values obtained by the standard Green-Kubo ethod. The agreeent is excellent. PACS nubers: 2.7.Ns; 5.6.-k; 5.2.Dd I. INTRODUCTION This paper copletes the analysis carried out in the copanion paper [1] by the study of theral conductivity with the Helfand-oent ethod [2]. Since the seventies, several works have been carried out for the calculation of the transport coefficients. Shear viscosity is the ost studied transport property, while theral conductivity has been less studied. The first coputation of theral conductivity goes back to the work of Alder et al. for hard-sphere systes [3]. Soft-sphere potential systes were considered for the first tie a few years later by Levesque et al. [] using the well-known Green-Kubo forula [5, 6, 7, 8]. Nevertheless, since the autocorrelation function of the icroscopic flux decreases slowly, especially near the triple point, ost of the studies devoted to the coputation of theral conductivity were perfored by nonequilibriu ethods. This is usually done by fixing the teperature gradient and easuring the heat flux [9, 1, 11, 12, 13, 1], except in Ref. [15] where the opposite is done, i.e., the heat flux is fixed and the teperature gradient is easured. However, soe equilibriu olecular dynaics studies using the standard Green-kubo forula were carried out [, 12, 1, 16]. More recently, as suggested in the nineties [17, 18], the generalized Einstein relation expressing theral conductivity as the variance of the tie integral of the icroscopic flux was coputed [19]. The purpose of the present paper is to extend the Helfand-oent ethod of the copanion paper [1] fro viscosity to theral conductivity. As an application of our ethod, we calculate the theral conductivity of the Lennard-Jones fluid at a phase point near the triple point. We show that the values obtained by the Helfand-oent ethod and the Green-Kubo values are in excellent agreeent. Such a ethod brings not only soe interest as an alternative equilibriu olecular dynaics ethod, but also in the context of recent theories in nonequilibriu statistical echanics. Indeed, the escape-rate foralis propose clear and direct relationships between the transport coefficients and quantities characterizing the icroscopic chaos such as the Lyapunov exponents and fractal diensions [2, 21, 22, 23]. Successful results have already been obtained for siple systes: diffusion in the Lorentz gas [2] and viscosity in a two-particle syste [25]. Furtherore, the hydrodynaic-ode ethod, aiing to construct at the icroscopic level the hydrodynaic odes which are the solutions of the diffusion or Navier-Stokes equations also depend on the possibility to define Helfand oents in periodic systes. This construction has already been carried out for diffusion in the Lorentz gas [26]. By defining the Helfand oent, we hopefully project to extend this construction to the other transport processes, in particular theral conductivity. The paper is organized as follows. In Section II, the theoretical results of Helfand [2] are briefly outlined. In Section III, we present our Helfand-oent ethod for the calculation of theral conductivity. Section IV gives the results of the olecular dynaics siulations. We copare our results by the Heldand-oent and Green-Kubo techniques and also to the litterature. Finally, conclusions are drawn in Section V. II. THEORETICAL BACKGROUND In the fifties, the Boltzann and Enskog theories of transport processes were copleted by an alternative approach developed by Green [5, 6], Kubo [7] and Mori [8]. This new approach relates the transport coefficients to the tie autocorrelation functions of their corresponding icroscopic flux. In particular, the theral conductivity coefficient κ can be expressed as κ = li N,V 1 k B T 2 V J (κ) ()J (κ) (t). (1) where J (κ) is the icroscopic flux associated with theral conductivity. This theory plays an iportant role in nuerical siulations. On the other hand, Helfand aied to express the transport coefficients in ters of generalized Einstein relations [2] and showed that theral conductivity is given by κ = li N,V,t 1 2k B T 2 V t [ G (κ) (t) G (κ) ()] 2, (2)
2 2 where G (κ) (t) is the corresponding Helfand oent defined as the centroid G (κ) (t) = N x a (E a E a ), (3) a=1 of the energies of the particles E a p2 a u(r ab ). () It can be proved that the Green-Kubo forula (1) and the Helfand equation (2) are equivalent if the icroscopic flux is related to the Helfand oent by J (κ) (t) = dg(κ) (t). (5) Thanks to Eq. (2), the theral conductivity coefficient is anifestly a non-negative quantity, as required by the second law of therodynaics. III. HELFAND-MOMENT METHOD Since the transport coefficients are bulk properties, they can be calculated with equilibriu olecular dynaics with periodic boundary conditions. This dynaics is ruled by Newton s equations odified in order to take into account the periodicity: dr a dp a = p a + s = F(r ab ) ; r (s) a δ(t t s ), F(r) = u(r) r, (6) where r (s) a is the jup of the particle a at tie t s with r (s) a = L equal to the length L of the siulation box. The force F(r) is here assued of finite range r < L/2. The relative position appearing in the force is defined as r ab = r a r b L a b (7) where the tie-dependent cell translation vector L a b [18] is chosen for the iniu-iage convention r ab < L/2 to be satisfied. For ore details, see Section III of the copanion paper [1]. We propose here a Helfandoent ethod for theral conductivity in systes with periodic boundary conditions. As for shear viscosity [1], Helfand s original expression (3) ust be odified in order to take into account the periodicity of the syste by the addition of extra ters: G (κ) (t) = N x a (E a E a ) + I(t). (8) a=1 Following a way siilar to the case of viscosity, we conclude that the Helfand oent which should be used in periodic systes is given by G (κ) (t) = a a s 1 x a (E a E a ) t a (E a E a )θ(t t s ) dτ L b ax. (9) The derivation is given in Appendix A. As for shear viscosity, the first extra ter is due to the jups of particles fro a boundary to the opposite one. The second extra ter takes into account of interactions of particles with the iage of other particles. By adding the two extra ters to the original Helfand oent, we recover the relation G = J. IV. NUMERICAL RESULTS We carried out olecular dynaics siulation to apply our Helfand-oent ethod to the calculation of theral conductivity in a fluid with the standard 6-12 Lennard-Jones potential u(r) = ǫ [ (σ/r) 12 (σ/r) 6]. All calculations we perfored are done with the cutoff r c = 2.5σ. In the reduced units with the tie t = t ǫ/(σ 2 ) and the space r = r/σ, the reduced theral conductivity is given by κ = κ σ2 k B ǫ. (1) The details of the siulations are given in the preceding paper [1]. To show the validity of the Helfand-oent ethod, we first copare with the results of the Green- Kubo forula. We depict in Fig. 1 the tie derivative of the ean-square displaceent of the Helfand oent (3) and the tie integral of the autocorrelation function of the icroscopic flux. The calculation is carried out for N = 1372 atos at the phase point near of the triple point with a reduced teperature of T = k B T/ǫ =.722 and a density n = nσ 3 =.82. As seen in Fig. 1, the two ethods are in perfect agreeent. We estiated theral conductivity by a linear fit on the ean-square displaceent of the Helfand oent. The fit is done in the region between 2 and 8 tie units to guarantee that the linear regie is reached. We calculated the theral conductivity for increasing syste sizes fro N = 18 atos to N = We give the results in Table I and depict the in Fig. 2 as a function of the inverse N 1 of the syste size. The linear extrapolation gives the following estiate of theral conductivity for an infinite syste, κ = 6.99 ±.3. (11)

We see in Table I that the values of the present work copare very well with the values of previous studies. conductivity κ* /N FIG. 2: Theral conductivity at the phase point T =.722 and n =.82 as a function of the inverse of the nuber N of atos. The circles are the results of the nuerical siulations and the dashed line the linear extrapolation. is based on generalized Einstein relations (2) with the Helfand oent defined to take into account periodic boundary conditions in the olecular dynaics. This allows us to calculate the theral conductivity coefficient in ters of the variance of the Helfand oent (9). We show that the original Helfand oent (3) ust be odified by adding two extra ters. After the addition of these extra ters, we recover the relation J = Ġ between the icroscopic flux J and the corresponding Helfand oent G. This is the generalization of the case of diffusion for which the velocity v x (the icroscopic flux) is related to the position x (the Helfand oent) in the sae way v x = ẋ. Consequently, we have showed that it is possible to calculate the theral conductivity coefficient by the ean-square displaceent of the Helfand oent. Indeed, our olecular dynaics siulations show perfect agreeent between the Helfandoent and Green-Kubo ethods. We think that the new expressions for the Helfand oent given in the present and the copanion papers [1] solve the probles on the use of generalized Einstein relations in periodic systes. In addition to the viscosities [1] and theral conductivity, it is possible to use a siilar ethod for the electric conductivity σ in periodic systes. Indeed, by a siilar derivation to the one found in Appendix A, one can show that the electric conductivity can be written as: σ = li N,V,t 1 [ 2 G (σ) (t) G (t) ] (σ), (12) 2k B TV t where the odified Helfand oent for periodic systes is expressed as: ] G (σ) (t) = a ez a [ x a s a θ(t t s ), (13) with the electric charge ez a of the particles and G (σ) () =. Finally, we notice that the Helfand-oent ethod plays an iportant role in the escape-rate foralis [2, 21] and the hydrodynaic-ode ethod [26] developed in nonequibriu statistical echanics [22]. They establish relationships between icroscopic and acroscopic levels in the context of the understanding of the origin of the irreversibility of cheical-physical phenoena. The derivation of the Helfand-oent ethods give one the possibility to confir nuerically the theoretical predictions of these foraliss. Acknowledgents V. 4 APPENDIX A: DERIVATION OF THE HELFAND MOMENT FOR THE THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY IN PERIODIC SYSTEMS The tie derivative of the odified Helfand oent (8) is given by dg (κ) (t) = a + a dx a (E a E a ) x a de a where the tie derivative of E a is de a = p a dp a = di(t) u ab pa p b r ab (A1). (A2) We notice that there is here no jup in position to consider because dr ab concerns a relative position r ab = r a r b L b a which satisfies the iniu iage convention within the range of the force. Syetrizing the second ter in Eq. (A1), we find a x a de a = = x a x b x ab L b ax F(r ba) (A3) where F(r ab ) = F(r ba ) according to Newton s third law and because x ab = x a x b L b ax. Substituting this expression in Eq. (A1), where dxa is given by odified Newton s equations of otion (6), we get the expression + a s di(t) a (E a E a ) δ(t t s ) x ab L b ax. (A) On the other hand, it is well known that the icroscopic flux J (κ) for theral conductivity is given by Since dg(κ) (t) that: di(t) p ax J (κ) (t) = (E a E a ) a + 1 x ab. (A5) = J (κ) (t) by definition, we thus obtain = a 1 s a (E a E a )δ(t t s ) L b ax. (A6) Finally, the quantity to be added to the usual Helfand oent (3) is: I(t) = a 1 s t a (E a E a )θ(t t s ) dτ L b ax. (A7) dg (κ) (t) = a p ax (E a E a ) [1] S. Viscardy, J. Servantie, and P.
