Hall of Fame broadcaster Bob Harris, the Voice of the Blue Devils for the past four decades, is in his 41st and final year calling the action for Duke football and men s basketball. Harris, who enters the season having called 459 consecutive Blue Devil football games, is a three-time Broadcaster of the Year honoree (1988, 1991 & 2011). The season will mark analyst Wes Chesson s 36th year providing color commentary. Chesson, an All-ACC receiver during his playing tenure ( ) and a member of the Duke Athletics Hall of Fame Class of 2013, set the then-school single-season record for receptions with 74 in 1970, and finished his career with 164 catches for 2,399 yards and 10 touchdowns. He went on to play with the NFL s Atlanta Falcons and Philadelphia Eagles. In December 2000, Harris and Chesson worked the 64th annual Shrine Bowl Game of the Carolinas in Charlotte. Dave Harding joins the broadcast team for his first season as the primary sideline reporter. A former Duke football captain, Harding serves as an Associate Director of Duke s Blue Devil Network. 3 TEAM NOTES DUKE vs. NORTH CAROLINA The two programs will meet for the 103rd time, and 96th consecutive year Thursday. The Tar Heels lead the series, Duke had won consecutive meetings against North Carolina before the Tar Heels answered with backto-back victories in 2014 and. The teams have faced each other 48 times in Durham, with Duke posting a record. The Blue Devils have lost 12 of their last 13 home games versus UNC with the lone win a triumph in A FOUR-WIN SEASON Duke heads into Thursday s game looking for its fourth win of the season. It would be the seventh time in nine campaigns under head coach David Cutcliffe that the Blue Devils have reached the four-win mark. In the nine seasons prior to Cutcliffe taking over the program, the Blue Devils had just one four-win campaign. A victory would make it five straight years with four or more wins with six in 2012, 10 in 2013, nine in 2014 and eight in. It is already the program s longest streak of consecutive four or more win campaigns since a seven year stretch from 1985 to SUCCESS AGAINST THE STATE Duke has won 12 of its last 15 games against teams from within the state of (from September 15, September 10, ), topping Wake Forest and N.C. Central four times, twice, N.C. State once and Elon once. Two of the three losses have been to the Tar Heels, on November 20, 2014, and November 7,. Duke also dropped a decision to Wake Forest in week two, September 10,. ANOTHER RANKED FOE THIS WEEK Duke will play its third contest of the season against a ranked foe this week with No. 15. The Blue Devils went 1-1 against ranked opponents in, falling to No. 23 Northwestern on September 19 and topping No. 20 Georgia Tech on September 26. Duke is 0-2 this year, falling at No. 7 Louisville on October 14 and to No. 23 Virginia Tech last Saturday. Duke has lost its two games to ranked foes this year by an average of 6.5 points per contest. Duke has recorded at least one win against a ranked opponent for three consecutive years, a first for the program since Duke s four total wins against ranked teams in the past three years (No. 16 Virginia Tech & No. 24 in 2013; No. 22 Georgia Tech in 2014; No. 20 Georgia Tech in ) are the most in a threeyear stretch since the Blue Devils claimed four from Duke is 4-7 in its last 11 games against ranked foes after losing 47 straight to ranked opponents (November 6, 1994 to October 25, 2013). A THURSDAY NIGHT IN DURHAM This week s game against will be Duke s sixth home Thursday contest and first since this same matchup two years ago, when North Carolina won on November 20, In Thursday games, Duke has hosted: North Carolina (11/20/2014), N.C. State (11/10/1983), (11/26/1959), Washington & Lee (11/27/1930) and Davidson (11/29/1928). Duke has an all-time record of in regular season Thursday contests. The Blue Devils won their last Thursday game, 37-7 on September 3,, at Tulane in the season opener. Duke is in night games under David Cutcliffe. OH SO CLOSE Duke has suffered six losses this year, but none by more than 14 points. In four of the six losses, Duke had the ball with a one-score game in the fourth quarter. Jones got his second weekly honor after the Georgia Tech game, when he completed 22-of-36 (.611) passes for 305 yards with two touchdowns. After the Notre Dame win, Jones and Wilson received honors. Jones completed 24-of-32 (.750) passes for 290 yards with three touchdowns while Wilson returned a kickoff 96 yards for a score. Singleton got his accolade after recording five tackles, one for lost yardage, one interception, one fumble recovery and one pass breakup during Duke s 13-6 victory against Army West Point. 4 OFFENSIVE NOTES QB NOTES WR/TE NOTES ANOTHER PERFORMANCE Duke finished the Georgia Tech game with 254 rushing yards and 305 passing yards. It was the third time this season the Blue Devils crossed the 200-yard plateau in both categories, joining efforts against N.C. Central and at Notre Dame. The Blue Devils are 2-1 this year when surpassing 200 in each category with the loss at Georgia Tech. A CHANCE FOR 250+ AND 150+ Duke is averaging passing yards a contest and rushing yards a game, within range of the third time in program history reaching 250 or more passing yards per game and 150 or more rushing yards a contest. A closer look: Year Rush YPG Pass YPG TOTAL YARDS A GAME AGAIN Duke has narrowly missed out on turning in four consecutive seasons of 400 or more yards of total offense per contest for the first time in program history by finishing 2014 with a mark. Last year, the Blue Devils averaged yards of total offense a contest. This year, Duke is close to hitting 400 or more yards of total offense per game with yards per contest. RECENT THIRD DOWN SUCCESS Duke has had its best third-down performances in the last three games and owns four consecutive contests with seven or more third down conversions for the first time since November 24, September 7, It is just the third time in the David Cutcliffe era Duke has had four straight games with seven or more conversions in the same season. Duke s last four games have had a higher cumulative conversion rate on third down than the four previous contests. Jones tallied 332 aerial yards against Wake Forest, 324 versus Virginia and 305 at Georgia Tech. He is the first Duke freshman quarterback to throw for 300 or more yards during his first two ACC starts. Jones is one of eight Duke quarterbacks with three 300-yard games versus ACC foes in the same year. GETTING IT DONE IN ACC PLAY Jones has started all five ACC games and posted a pass efficiency rating. His mark would be the highest by a Blue Devil quarterback in league play since Anthony Boone s in A HIGHLY EFFICIENT SEASON Jones has turned in four games this year with an efficiency rating of or higher, tied for the second most by a Duke signal caller during the Cutcliffe era. Jones has two games with 30 or more completions, tied for the seventh most in a year at Duke. Jones has completed.600 or more percent of his passes in six of his nine games this year. His.620 season completion percentage is on track to shatter the Duke freshman record of.559, set by Steve Slayden in FINDING HOLES IN THE RUN GAME Jones rushed for a career-high 99 yards versus No. 23 Virginia Tech on Saturday and has gained 172 ground yards in the last two games after totaling 122 in the previous four contests. Jones rushed for a personal-best tying two touchdowns versus the Hokies. He also had two versus Wake Forest. Jones owns five ground scores this season, tied for the third most in a year by a Duke freshman. Brandon Connette owns the record with eight in Jones five rushing scores are the second most on the team, behind only injured running back Jela Duncan s six. Duke has had a quarterback lead the team in rushing touchdowns the last five years with Connette (2012/8 & 2013/14) and Thomas Sirk (2014/8 & /8). JONES TOPS IN TOTAL OFFENSE Jones owns 2,412 yards of total offense this season, the most in a year by a Duke rookie. TAYLOR BECOMES A FACTOR With redshirt senior Anthony Nash missing the last two games due to injury, redshirt sophomore Chris Taylor has stepped into the void. He paced the squad with six receptions versus No. 23 Virginia Tech and has picked up more than half his career yardage total entering the contest at Georgia Tech in the last two weeks. YPG YPC TDs YOUNG MAKES FIRST START Redshirt freshman Aaron Young made his first career start against Virginia Tech and finished with personal bests in receptions (four) and yards (48). Helping his cause was a career-long 30-yard grab in the opening quarter. RAHMING AMONG ACC S LEADERS Sophomore T.J. Rahming has been Jones top target, leading Duke with 42 receptions, tied for the seventh most in the ACC. Rahming is just the third player in Duke history to register 40 or more catches in each of his first two seasons as a Blue Devil, joining Wes Chesson ( ) and Conner Vernon ( ). WILSON WITH 109 YARDS AT GT Junior Shaun Wilson turned in a year-best game at Georgia Tech, rushing for a season-high 109 yards, including a year-long 57 yard dash.
