2 Motivation Fama and French (1988, Poterba and Summer (1988 document significant negative correlations in multi-year stock returns, using conventional asymptotic theory to asses the degree of statistic significance

3 Motivation How powerful is the classical asymptotic theory for data that has a lot of overlapping observations, so that there is not a lot of independent information in multi-year statistics? 3

4 Novel Approach Conventionally, the overlap in multiyear data is treated as fixed, so that as the time span increases, the ratio of the overlap to the sample size approaches zero. 4
