Cluter variable and F-polynomial 37 Reference 39 Introduction Let be a formal parameter, recall the claical notion of -integer: [a] := a = a, where a i a non-negative integer. Surpriingly, a imilar notion in the cae of rational number i miing in the literature. A traightforward attempt to -deform a rational number r [r] would be [], or r, (which i eentially the ame formula modulo recaling). In thoe formula the numerator and denominator are -deformed eparately, a -integer. However, uch definition would not atify intereting combinatorial propertie. The goal of thi paper i to define a verion of -analogue of rational number, uing a combinatorial approach. In our approach the numerator and denominator affect each other -deformation. The -deformation of a rational r i a uotient of two polynomial: [ r ] = R() S(), where R and S both depend on r and. The implet example to illutrate thi i: [ ] 5 = [ ] 5, = where the uantized 5 in the numerator i different depending on the denominator. The notion of -rational we introduce ha a certain imilarity to that of the claical Gauian - binomial coefficient ( ) r, which i a polynomial depending on r and that -deform the uual binomial
Q-DEFORMATIONS 3 coefficient ( r ). Thi imilarity manifet in the comparion of the weighted Farey um rule and the - verion of Pacal triangle. However, the Farey graph i more complicated than the Pacal triangle, ince every rational ha infinitely many neighbor. The main propertie of the -rational we conider are the following. A -deformed rational atify a total poitivity property. For every rational r, both polynomial R and S in the numerator and denominator of [ ] r have poitive integer coefficient. Moreover, for two rational, r > r, the polynomial RS SR ha poitive integer coefficient (ee Theorem ). B There i an enumerative interpretation of the -rational (Theorem 4). Coefficient of the polynomial in the numerator and denominator count o-called cloure et of a certain graph. Thi i alo euivalent to counting ubrepreentation of the maximal indecompoable uiver repreentation. In addition, we obtain -analogue of everal claical notion and reult. (a) Theorem provide a relationhip between regular and negative continued fraction, generalizing the formula from [3, 4]. (b) The weighted Farey graph. Theorem 3 generalize the reult of[5] that relate continued fraction and hyperbolic geometry. (c) The -continued fraction and -rational are repreented by product of elementary matrice ( ) ( ) ( ) R :=, L :=. S :=, that are -deformed generator of PSL(, Z). (d) We obtain -analogue of the continuant (i.e., the determinant that give the numerator and denominator of a continued fraction in term of it coefficient), and prove the Ptolemy relation generalizing the Euler identity for the continuant (ee Propoition 5.5). To ummarize, the reult (a) (d) of the above lit give four euivalent way to define and calculate -rational. Thee four interpretation can be ued for different purpoe. We tet the notion of -rational on the example of two particularly imple infinite euence of rational: the ratio of conecutive Fibonacci and Pell number. Thee are conecutive convergent of the golden ratio and thoe of the ilver ratio. Our approach lead to certain verion of -Fibonacci and -Pell number. The Fibonacci cae turn out to be related to the well-known Seuence A79487 of OEIS (and it mirror A345), while the obtained verion of -Pell number eem to be new. Note that -analogue of the Fibonacci and Pell number i a wat ubject, and everal different verion of them are known, but do not appear in our context. The notion of -rational introduced in thi paper need only uite elementary contruction. However, thi notion aroe at the interface of two theorie, that of continued fraction and cluter algebra. Thee motivating relation are preented in two appendice in a brief form with no technical detail. In Appendix A, we relate the -rational to the Jone polynomial of rational knot. In Appendix B, we relate the -rational to the F-polynomial of a cluter algebra. Thi paper i the econd part of[] where we dicued combinatorial propertie of continued fraction. However, it can be read independently.
4 SOPHIE MORIER-GENOUD, VALENTIN OVSIENKO. Introducing -deformed rational and continued fraction In thi ection we define -deformation of finite continued fraction and formulate their firt baic propertie... The main definition. Given a rational number r Q, we alway aume r > and that r and are poitive coprime integer. It ha two different continued fraction expanion r = a + a a m = c c... c k with c i and a i, denoted by [a,...,a m ] and c,...,c k, repectively. They are uually called regular and negative (or minu- ) continued fraction, repectively. Conidering an even number of coefficient in the regular expanion and coefficicient greater than in the negative expanion make the expanion uniue. We define -deformation of the regular and negative continued fraction. We tart with an explicit formula; euivalent, but more combinatorial, definition will be given in Section and 3. Definition.. (a) Given a regular continued fraction [a,...,a m ], we define it -deformation by, (.) [a,...,a m ] := [a ] + [a ] + [a 3 ] + a a a3 [a 4 ] + a4... [a m ] + am [a m ] (b) Given a negative continued fraction c,...,c k, we define it -deformation by (.) c,...,c k := [c ] The following tatement will be proved in Section 4.6. c c [c ] [c k ] c k [c k ] Theorem. If a poitive continued fraction [a,...,a m ] and a negative continued fraction c,...,c k repreent the ame rational number, then their -deformation alo coincide: [a,...,a m ] = c,...,c k. In other word, the explicit formula (ee [3, 4]) for converion between the coefficient a and c remain unchanged in the -deformed cae. Thi formula will be recalled in Section.. Given a rational number r = [a,...,a m ] = c,...,c k, the rational function defined by (.) and (.) will be called the -deformation of r, or imply a -rational. We will ue the notation (.3) [ r ] =: R() S(),
Q-DEFORMATIONS 5 where R and S are polynomial in with integer coefficient. We alway aume that (after a poible implification) R and S are coprime in Z[], and that R() = r, S() =. Thi fixe the ign in a uniue way o that R and S are uniuely determined. Let u tart with imple example. Example.. (a) The cae = and = r are the only cae where [ r uotient of the -deformed integer tanding in the numerator and denominator: [ ] r = [r]. r [r ] (b) The firt non-trivial example are [ 5 = 3, ] = [,] = , [ 5 =,3 3] = [,,,] = , [ 7 = 3,, 3] = [,3] = , [ 7 4] =,4 = [,,,] = , [ 7 5] =,,3 = [,,,] = (c) The -rational with denominator [] are: [ m+ ] = m + m + m+ +. (d) The -rational with denominator [3] are: [ 3m+ 3 = ] m + m + m+ + m+ ++, [ 3m+ ] 3 = m + m + m+ + m+ ++. ] coincide with the We ee that the degree of the polynomial R and S are in general lower than thoe of [r] and []... Total poitivity. An important property of the polynomial R and S i the following property of poitivity. Propoition.3. For every -rational [ r ] = R() S(), the polynomial R and S have poitive integer coefficient. Thi property i not immediate from the expreion (.) nor from the expreion (.) (after implification minu ign may appear). We give an elementary proof below in.3. We will give a combinatorial interpretation of the coefficient; ee Section 3. Furthermore, Propoition.3 ha the following trengthened verion. Theorem. For every pair of -rational, [ r [r ] and, the polynomial in ] (.4) X r,r := RS SR ha poitive integer coefficient, provided r > r. Thi tatement i proved in Section 4.7. The following corollary can be deduced by evaluating the polynomial at =.
6 SOPHIE MORIER-GENOUD, VALENTIN OVSIENKO Corollary.4. Let r > r be two rational and let R S = [ r R and ] S = for ome integer α. RS SR = α if and only if r r =, The exact value of α i given in Propoition 4.. [ r. One ha ] Remark.5. (a) Theorem implie a natural ordering on the et of -rational. (b) Theorem i a manifetation of the general phenomenon of total poitivity. Recall that a N matrix i totally poitive if all n(n ) it minor are poitive. The uotient R() S() and R () S () naturally enter a N totally poitive matrix. (c) Theorem implie Propoition.3, when applied to r = r, or =..3. Baic propertie of the polynomial R and S. Let (c i ) i k be a euence of integer greater or eual to. Conider two euence (R i ) i and (S i ) i of polynomial in defined by the following recurion (.5) R i+ = [c i+ ] R i ci R i, S i+ = [c i+ ] S i ci S i, with the initial condition (R, R ) = (, [c ] ) and (S, S ) = (,). A a common fact on generalized continued fraction, one oberve that the above euence define the convergent of the continued fraction c,...,c k. More preciely, one ha for all i k. c,...,c i = R i() S i (), Propoition.6. For all i k, (i) the leading term of R i i c+...+ci i and the contant term i ; (ii) the leading term of S i i c+...+ci i+ and the contant term i ; (iii) R i and S i have poitive integer coefficient; (iv) R i and S i are coprime. Proof. (i) and (ii) are obtained by eay induction. Aume that R i and R i ci R i have poitive integer coefficient for ome fixed index i. From the recurion one get R i+ = [c i+ ] R i +(R i ci R i ), which implie that R i+ alo have poitive integer coefficient, and one get R i+ ci+ R i = [c i+ ] R i +(R i ci R i ), which implie that R i+ ci+ R i alo have poitive integer coefficient. (iii) follow then by induction. From the following determinant computation R i+ R i = ci R i R i ci S i S i = R i R i ci =... = c+...+ci i S i S i S i+ S i one deduce that the only poible common divior to R i and S i are power of. Since the polynomial have contant term they are not diviible by a power of. Hence (iv). In particular, for i = k one obtain that R k and S k are preciely the polynomial R and S of (.3), and one deduce the following.
Corollary.7. Let R() S() = [a,...,a m ] = c,...,c k. (i) The degree of the polynomial R and S in (.3) are Q-DEFORMATIONS 7 deg(r) = c +...+c k k = a +...+a m, deg(s) = c +...+c k k + = a +...+a m. (ii) The coefficient of the leading term of R and S are eual to. (iii) The contant term of R and S are eual to, o that R() = S() =..4. The pecial value =. The value = i pecial. In thi cae we have the following. Propoition.8. (i) For every rational r, the correponding polynomial R and S evaluated at = can take only three value:,, or. (ii) R( ) = if and only if r i even. (iii) S( ) = if and only if i even. We will prove thi tatement in Section 4.9. A corollary of Propoition.8 Part (ii) i that, for even r, the polynomial R() i a multiple of (+), and imilarly for Q().. Weighted triangulation and -deformed continued fraction The goal of thi ection i to give an alternative, recurrent, way to define -deformation of continued fraction. We contruct a combinatorial model for calculating the -continued fraction baed on a imple triangulation of an n-gon. The main difference comparing with the claical continued fraction i that the edge of the correponding triangulation are weighted. We how that the weight aociated to -deformed continued fraction can be read directly in the Farey graph... Continued fraction and the triangulation T r/. We briefly recall a relationhip between continued fraction and triangulation of n-gon (for more detail; ee []). Conider the following wrinkled triangulation of an n-gon with exactly two exterior triangle: a c c c 3 c k c k+ c c n c n c k+ a a 3 Every uch triangulation define, and i defined by, two euence of poitive integer: (a,...,a m ) and (c,...,c n ). The integer a i count the number of conecutive eually poitioned triangle (i.e., the triangle bae-down, or bae-up ) while the integer c i count the number of triangle incident at the vertex i. Let k be the number of vertice between the exterior vertice. The following tatement i a reformulation of a formula from [3, 4]. The regular and negative continued fraction defined by the euence (a,...,a m ) and (c,...,c k ) coming from a triangulation, are eual to each other: a 4 [a,...,a m ] = c,...,c k. Euivalently, the explicit formula of converion for the coefficient of regular and negative continued fraction i: (.) (c,...,c k ) = ( ) a +,,...,, a }{{} 3 +,,...,,...,a }{{} m +,,...,. }{{} a a 4 a m
8 SOPHIE MORIER-GENOUD, VALENTIN OVSIENKO Notation. The contructedtriangulationwill be denoted by T r/, where r i the rationalnumber defined by the above continued fraction, i.e., r := [a,...,a m ] = c,...,c k. Remark.. Note that the number n i related with the coefficient of the continued fraction by n = a +a + +a m + = c +c + +c k k The Farey um rule. The triangulation T r/ encode the full euence of convergent of the continued fraction via the following Farey um rule: (.) r r r +r := +. We label the vertice of the n-gon by rational tarting from and thi labeling by the rule (.). at vertice and, and extending r r+r + r r r r+r + The following tatement i euivalent to a theorem of C. Serie; ee [5], and it wa firt formulated in the context of hyperbolic geometry and a Farey teellation: the vertex k+ of the triangulation T r/ ha the label r. Example.. The rational 5, 5 3, 7 5 correpond to the following triangulation Weighted triangulation T r/. Given a rational r and the correponding triangulation T r/, we define the weighted triangulation T r/. Both, the vertice and the edge of T r/ are aigned a weigh. The edge of the triangulation are aigned a weight, which i a power of, while the vertice are labeled with -rational. Definition.3. The edge are aigned weight according to the following rule. (a) The edge at the vertex with number have the following weight: c c

Remark.4. (a) The ide of the initial triangle (,, ) have weight, and. Note that the ide ofweight i not ued in the computationofthe continuedfraction. The weight will become clear in Section.6. (b) It follow from Definition.3 that the edge at a bottom vertex have the following weight: l In particular, at mot one edge at a bottom vertex i of weight different from. (c) Side of every triangle have the weight (, l, l ): for ome l. l l Example.5. The weighted triangulation T 5/,T 5/3,T 7/5 (ee Example.) are a follow.4. Labeling the vertice of T r/. We will alo need to label the vertice of the weighted triangulation T r/. [ ] r Definition.6. Let u label by the -rational the vertexoft r r/, that correpondto the rational in T r/.
SOPHIE MORIER-GENOUD, VALENTIN OVSIENKO The weight of T r/ then encode algebraic relation between the fraction attached to the vertice. More preciely, we have the following tatement. Theorem 3. Every triangle of T r/ i of the form (.3) R S l R S. l R + l R S + l S Proof. We uppoe that R S = [ r ] and R S repectively. Cae. The local picture i a follow: = [ r ] are attached to the vertice j > k and i k c i c i i i i+ l l l j + j j We want to how that the fraction R S attached to the vertex j i given by R + l R S + l S. Recall that the coefficient of the negative continued fraction are given by the number of triangle incident to the vertice (ee.). In particular, for the fraction R S or R S the coefficient are given by removing all the vertice and triangle between i and j or i and j repectively. More preciely one get R S = c,...,c i, R S = c,...,c i,l, R S = c,...,c i,l+. The deired relation between the numerator and between the denominator are then deduced from the recurrence relation (.5). Cae. The local picture i a follow: c h c c i i+ j Note that if h = i one ha l = c = c i >, otherwie l =. We want to how that the fraction R S attached to the vertex i+ i given by R + l R S + l S. We proceed by induction on i h. If h = i one ha R S = c,...,c i, R S = c,...,c i, R S = c,...,c i,. Uing the recurrence relation (.5), one eaily obtain the deired relation. If we aumed etablihed that the fraction R(4) attached to the vertex i atifie R S (4) S = R +R (4), S +S (4) then again one eaily deduce the deired relation uing the coefficient of the expanion and the recurrence relation.
Q-DEFORMATIONS.5. Weighted Farey um. We generalize the Farey um (.) in the cae of weighted triangulation, uing the formula that ha already appeared in Theorem 3. Definition.7. In the triangle (.3), we call the fraction: (.4) R R S S := R + l R S + l S, the weighted Farey um of R S and R S. Theorem 3 then affirm that every -rational number [ r can be computed recurively from the triangulation T r/, applying the weighted Farey um rule. Propoition.3 and Corollary.4 can be alo obtained a coneuence of Theorem 3. Example.8. The -rationalin T 5/,T 5/3,T 7/5 can be obtained recurively. One obtain the following. ] ++ + The -rational [ ] 7 5 correpond to Weighted Farey graph. The claical Farey graph i the infinite graph with the et of vertice eual to the et of rational completed by the infinity Q { }, the infinity being repreented by. Two vertice, r r and, are connected if and only if r r = ±. The Farey graph form an infinite triangulation of the hyperbolic plane, called the Farey teellation. Every continued fraction can be undertood a a walk along the edge of the Farey graph. For the baic propertie of the Farey graph and it relation to continued fraction; ee []. We aign a weight to every edge of the Farey graph, and then label it vertice by the -rational number (intead of rational number). Definition.9. (a) The ide of the initial triangle (,, ) are weighted a follow (b) The ide of every other triangle of the Farey graph are labeled according to the following rule.
SOPHIE MORIER-GENOUD, VALENTIN OVSIENKO l l Clearly, the rule (a) and (b) uniuely determine the weight of all edge of the Farey graph. Indeed, every edge i adjacent to two triangle in the Farey teellation, and any two edge are related by a finite euence of triangle. We will eentially be intereted in the interval [, ) of the Farey graph. Definition.9 clarifie the weight in Definition.3. Indeed, the triangulation T r/ can be embedded into the Farey graph (cf. []), o that it weight are obtained a the pull-back of the weight on the Farey graph. Therefore vertice are labeled according to the weighted Farey um rule: l l R S R+ l R S+ l S R S Moreover, from the embedding of T r/ one deduce that l i the lat coefficient in the negative expanion of R S := R+l R S+ l S, i.e. if R S = c,...,c i then l = c i. The top part of the weighted Farey graph i repreented in Figure Figure. Upper part of the weighted Farey graph between and
Q-DEFORMATIONS 3.7. A comparion to the Gauian -binomial coefficient. There i a certain analogy between the -continued fraction and Gauian -binomial coefficient. Indeed, the -binomial ( ) r atify the relation ( ) ( ) ( ) r r r = +, and can be calculated recurrently uing the weighted Pacal triangle that tart like thi: ( ) ( 4 ) ( 3 ) ( ) ( 4 ) ( ) ( 3 ) ( ) ( ) ( 4 ) ( ) ( 3 ) ( 3 3) 3 ( 4 3) with the firt cae ( ) 4 = where a -binomial i not eual to a -integer. The main difference between -rational and -binomial i that, unlike the Pacal triangle, every vertex of the Farey graph i related with infinitely many other vertice. Let u mention that -binomial coefficient do not occur a numerator (or denominator) of -rational, except for the thoe -binomial that are eual to -integer. Neverthele, there are many reemblance between the polynomial, for intance, ( 5 3 ) = and [ 8 3 ] ( 4 4) = Counting on graph InthiectionweprovideacombinatorialinterpretationofthepolynomialRandQofa-rational [ ] r. Given a rational r, we conider an oriented graph of type A which i (projectively) dual to the triangulation T r/. We how that the coefficient of the polynomial R() and Q() count ome pecial ubet of vertice of the graph called the cloure. Euivalently, thi can be reformulated a counting of ubrepreentation of the maximal uiver repreentation of the aociated oriented graph. 3.. Oriented graph aociated with a rational. Given a rational r = [a,...,a m ], conider the imple graph A n 3, where n = a + +a m +, with n 3 vertice written in a row and connected by n ingle edge: Thi graph i of coure known a the Dynkin diagram of type A n 3. The graph G r/ i jut the tandard graph that i uually aociated to a triangulation. In our cae, the triangulation T r/ i particularly imple, o that the correponding graph i of type A. Note that G r/ may be thought of a projectively dual to the triangulation T r/ in the following ene. Vertice of G r/ are identified with diagonal of T r/, and it edge are identified with the vertice of T r/ where the diagonal cro: The projectively dual graph aociated with a (more general) triangulation of an n-gon i contructed a follow. Mark a puncture at every diagonal of the triangulation, and join by an edge thoe puncture whoe diagonal hare a vertex of the n-gon. Fix the orientation of every edge of the graph in uch a way that the orientation of the triangle defined by the edge and the correponding vertex of the n-gon be poitive. Thi lead to an oriented graph with n 3 vertice which i not necearily bipartite and can contain cycle. For example, the graph projectively dual to the following triangulated decagon contain a 3-cycle. Given an oriented graph G, a et of vertice C G i called a cloure if there are no outgoing edge from the element of C to vertice in the complement G \C. A cloure with l element will be called an l-vertex cloure. A ingle vertex form a -vertex cloure if and only if it i a ink of G. More generally, an l-vertex cloure can be thought of a a generalized ink. Note that there can be edge between the vertice that belong to the cloure. The following tatement i our main combinatorial reult. Theorem 4. Let r = [a,...,a m ] and R() S() = [ r, then (i) the numerator i a polynomial R() = +ρ +ρ + +ρ n 4 n 4 + n 3, uch that ] ρ i = #{i-vertex cloure of the graph G r/ }, for all i; (i) the denominator i a polynomial S() = +σ +σ + +σ n a 4 n a 4 + n a 3 uch that for all i. On can compute the polynomial S correponding to [ 5 ] and check that indeed, S() = Remark 3.6. (a) A a corollary of Theorem 4, we ee that the total number of cloure ubet of the graph G r/ and G r/ i eual to r and, repectively. Thi obervation provide an intereting combinatorial way to calculate the numerator and denominator of a (claical) continued fraction. (b) It would be intereting to invetigate counting of cloure ubet of vertice and the correponding polynomial for more general graph than G r/. For intance, applied to the cae of the graph projectively dual to a triangulation (ee Remark 3.3) thi approach could lead to a verion of uantized Gramannian G,n A reformulation with uiver repreentation. An euivalent reformulation of Theorem 4 ue the notion of uiver repreentation (a uiver being another word for an oriented graph). Let u recall a few tandard definition and fact. We refer to [9] for the general theory of uiver repreentation. A repreentation of a uiver aociate a vector pace to each vertex, and a linear map to each edge. A repreentation i indecompoable if it i not iomorphic to the direct um of non-zero repreentation. According to a theorem of Gabriel, indecompoable repreentation of a uiver of finite (i.e., of Dynkin) type correpond to the poitive root of the root ytem of the Dynkin diagram. 17 Q-DEFORMATIONS Proof of Theorem 4. We ue the induction on n = a + +a m +. The bai n = 4 i obviou: the graph G / conit in one point and ha one empty and one -vertex cloure, that correpond to the polynomial R() = +, while the graph G / i empty and correpond to the polynomial S() =. Let u prove the induction tep. Conider a rational r = [a,...,a m ]. Cae A. Aume that a m 3, then the triangulation T r/ end with (at leat) three bae-up triangle, and the correponding graph G r/ ha (at leat) two lat edge oriented to the right. By Definition.7, one ha R S (3.) R = R +R. Conider the rational r = [a,...,a m,a m ] whoe triangulation T r / (rep. graph G r / ) i obtained by removing one right triangle (rep. one right edge). In the cae of the rational r = [a,...,a m,], the triangulation T r / i obtained by removing a m bae-up triangle in the right and reverion of the lat bae-down triangle in the erie of a m bae-down triangle. One ha: (3.) ρ l+ = ρ l +ρ l+, G r / G r/ a m where ρ l+,ρ l and r l+ are the number of (l+)-vertex cloure of G r/, of l-vertex cloure of G r /, and (l+)-vertex cloure of G r /, repectively. Proof. Every l-vertex cloure of G r / correpond to an (l+)-vertex cloure of G r/ by adding the lat right vertex of G r/ (which i a ink). Furthermore, every l-vertex cloure of G r / correpond to an l-vertex cloure of G r/, that contain no vertex from the right a m vertice. Hence the lemma. By the induction aumption, the coefficient of the polynomial R () and R () count the cloure ubet of the graph G r / and G r /, repectively. The triangulation T 7 i a decagon with the uiddity euence 5,8 3 (c,...,c ) = (3,3,,,4,3,,,4,), the polynomial X7 i given up to a power of 5,8 3 by the numerator of,4,3. The vertice of the N-gon are numbered in decreaing order (the firt vertex i and Nth vertex i ). Let k and l be the number of the vertice correponding to the fraction R S and R S, repectively. We aume that l > k + (if l = k + the fraction are linked in the Farey graph and thi cae i covered eparetely with Corollary.4 and Propoition 4. below). Let (c,...,c N ) be the uiddity of T r, i.e., c i i the number of triangle incident with the i-th,r vertex. By definition of T r, one ha,r c k = c l = c N =, and c i for i k,l,n.
