The maximum number of clique in graph without long cycle Ruth Luo September 13, 017 arxiv: v [math.co] 11 Sep 017 Abtract The Erdő Gallai Theorem tate that for k 3 every graph on n vertice with more than 1 (k 1(n 1 edge contain a cycle of length at leat k. Kopylov proved a trengthening of thi reult for -connected graph with extremal example H n,k,t and H n,k,. In thi note, we generalize the reult of Kopylov to bound the number of -clique in a graph with circumference le than k. Furthermore, we how that the ame extremal example that maximize the number of edge alo maximize the number of clique of any fixed ize. Finally, we obtain the extremal number of -clique in a graph with no path on k-vertice. Mathematic Subject Claification: 05C35, 05C38. Keyword: Turán problem, cycle, path. 1 Introduction In [4], Erdő and Gallai determined ex(n, P k, the maximum number of edge in an n-vertex graph that doe not contain a copy of the path on k vertice, P k. Thi reult wa a corollary of the following theorem: Theorem 1.1 (Erdő and Gallai [4]. Let G be an n-vertex graph with more than 1 (k 1(n 1 edge, k 3. Then G contain a cycle of length at leat k. To obtain the reult for path, uppoe G i an n-vertex graph with no copy of P k. Add a new vertex v adjacent to all vertice in G, and let thi new graph be G. Then G i an n + 1-vertex graph with no cycle of length k + 1 or longer, and o e(g + n = e(g 1 kn edge. Corollary 1. (Erdő and Gallai [4]. Let G be an n-vertex graph with more than 1 (k n edge, k. Then G contain a copy of P k. Both reult are harp with the following extremal example: for Theorem 1.1, when k divide n 1, take any connected n-vertex graph whoe block (maximal connected ubgraph with no cut vertice are clique of order k 1. For Corollary 1., when k 1 divide n 1, take the n-vertex graph whoe connected component are clique of order k 1. There have been everal alternate proof and harpening of the Erdő-Gallai theorem including reult by Woodall [15], Lewin [13], Faudree and Schelp[5, 6], and Kopylov [1] ee [8] for further detail. 2 The tronget verion wa that of Kopylov who improved the Erdő Gallai bound for -connected graph. To tate the theorem, we firt introduce the family of extremal graph. Fix k 4, n k, k > a 1. Define the n-vertex graph H n,k,a a follow. The vertex et of H n,k,a i partitioned into three et A, B, C uch that A = a, B = n k + a and C = k a and the edge et of H n,k,a conit of all edge between A and B together with all edge in A C. Note that when a, H n,k,a i -connected, ha no cycle of length k or longer, and e(h n,k,a = + (n k + aa. ( k a C A B Figure 1: H 14,11,3 Definition. Let f (n, k, a := ( ( k a + (n k + a a 1, where f (n, k, a = e(h n,k,a. By conidering the econd derivative, one can check that f (n, k, a i convex in a in the domain [1, (k 1/ ], thu it attain it maximum at one of the endpoint a = 1 or a = (k 1/. Theorem 1.3 (Kopylov [1]. Let n k 5 and let t = k 1. If G i a -connected n-vertex graph with e(g max{f (n, k,, f (n, k, t}, then either G ha a cycle of length at leat k, or G = H n,k,, or G = H n,k,t. Figure : H n,k,, H n,k,t (k = t + 1, H n,k,t (k = t + ; oval denote complete ubgraph of ize k, t, and t, repectively. It i traight-forward to check that any -connected graph that i not a triangle ha a cycle of length 4 or greater, and o the theorem cover all nontrivial choice of k. Thi theorem alo implie Theorem 1.1 by applying induction to each block of the graph. We conider a generalized Turán-type problem. Fix graph T and H, and define the function ex(n, T, H to be the maximum number of (unlabeled copie of T in an H-free graph on n vertice. When T = K, we have the uual extremal number ex(n, T, H = ex(n, H. There are many notable paper tudying the ex(n, T, H function for different combination of T and H. Erdő [3] proved that for r, among all n-vertex graph that forbid K r+1, the Turán
graph (i.e., the balanced complete r-partite graph maximize the number of copie of K. Hatami, Hladký, Král, Norine, and Razborov [11] and independently Grzeik [9] proved ex(n, C 5, K 3 = (n/5 5 whenever n i diviible by 5 uing the method of flag algebra. On the other hand, Bollobá and Győri [] proved (1+o( n3/ ex(n, K 3, C 5 (1+o(1 5 4 n3/, and later Győri and Li [10] proved an upper bound for ex(n, K 3, C k+1 in term of ex(n, C k. Thi bound wa improved by Füredi and Özkahya [7] and then later improved again by Alon and Shikhelman [1]. In the ame paper, Alon and Shikhelman proved ex(n, K, K r,t = Θ(n ( /r for certain value of r,, and t, among other reult. Furthermore, uch generalized Turán-type reult for graph can be intrumental for proving related extremal reult in hypergraph. For example, Füredi and Özkahya [7] ued their upper bound for the number of triangle in graph without cycle of fixed length to give an upper bound for the number of hyperedge in 3-uniform hypergraph without Berge-cycle of a fixed length. In thi note, we give an upper bound for the number of -clique in a graph without cycle of length k or greater (i.e., circumference le than k. We alo obtain ex(n, K, P k. Definition. For, let N (G denote the number of unlabeled copie of K in G, e.g., N (G = e(g. Our main reult i a generalization of Kopylov reult, Theorem 1.3. In particular, we how that the ame extremal example that maximize the number of edge among n-vertex -connected graph with circumference le than k alo maximize the number of clique of any ize. Our main reult are the following: Theorem 1.4. Let n k 5 and let t = k 1. If G i a -connected n-vertex graph with circumference le than k, then N (G max{f (n, k,, f (n, k, t}. Again, thi theorem i harp with the ame extremal example H n,k, and H n,k,t. Thi theorem implie the clique verion of Theorem 1.1: Corollary 1.5. Let n k 4. If G i an n-vertex graph with circumference le than k, then N (G n 1 ( k 1. k Unlike the edge cae, Theorem 1.4 unfortunately doe not eaily imply ex(n, K, P k. However, a Kopylov-tyle argument very imilar to the proof of Theorem 1.4 give the reult for path. Theorem 1.6. Let n k 4 and let G be an n-vertex connected graph with no path on k vertice. Let t = (k /. Then N (G max{f (n, k 1, 1, f (n, k 1, t}. We have harpne example H n,k 1,1 and H n,k 1,t. component give the following reult: Corollary 1.7. ex(n, K, P k =. n k 1 ( k 1 Finally, uing induction on the number of And the ame extremal example a for Corollary 1. apply. 3
The proof for Corollary 1.5, Theorem 1.6, and Theorem 1.7 are given in Section 3 of thi paper. We firt prove Theorem 1.4. Proof of Theorem 1.4 Let G be an edge-maximal counterexample. Then G i k-cloed, i.e., adding any additional edge to G create a cycle of length at leat k. In particular, for any nonadjacent vertice x and y of G, there exit a path of at leat k 1 edge between x and y. We will ue the following lemma: Lemma.1 (Kopylov [1]. Let G be a -connected n-vertex graph with a path P of m edge with endpoint x and y. For v V (G, let d P (v = N(v V (P. Then G contain a cycle of length at leat min{m + 1, d P (x + d P (y}. Our firt goal i to how that G contain a large core, i.e., a ubgraph with large minimum degree. For thi, we ue the notion of diintegration. Definition: For a natural number α and a graph G, the α-diintegration of a graph G i the proce of iteratively removing from G the vertice with degree at mot α until the reulting graph ha minimum degree at leat α+1 or i empty. Thi reulting ubgraph H = H(G, α will be called the (α + 1-core of G. It i well known that H(G, α i unique and doe not depend on the order of vertex deletion (for intance, ee [14]. Let H(G, t denote the (t + 1-core of G, i.e., the reulting graph of applying t-diintegration to G. We claim that H(G, t i nonempty. Suppoe H(G, t i empty. In the diintegration proce, every time a vertex of degree at mot t i removed, we delete at mot ( t 1 copie of K. For the lat l t vertice, we remove at mot ( l 1 1 copie of K with each deletion. Thu t t 1 t 0 N (G (n t t t = (n t + 1 t t + 1 = (n (t f (n, k, t, a contradiction. Therefore H(G, t i nonempty. Next we how that H(G, t i a complete graph. If there exit a nonedge of H(G, t, then in G, there i a path of length at leat k 1 edge with thee vertice a it endpoint. Among all nonadjacent pair of vertice in H(G, t, chooe x, y uch that there i a longet path P in G with endpoint x and y. By maximality of P, all neighbor 4
of x in H(G, t lie in P : if x ha a neighbor x H(G, t P, then either x y E(G and x P i a cycle of length at leat k, or x y / E(G and o x P i a longer path. Similar for y. Hence, by Lemma.1, G ha a cycle of length at leat min{k, d P (x + d P (y} = min{k, (t + 1} = k, a contradiction. Now let r = V (H(G, t. Each vertex in H(G, t ha degree at leat t + 1, o r t +. Alo, if r k 1, a G i -connected and H(G, t i a clique, we can extend a path on r vertice of H(G, t to a cycle of length at leat r + 1 k, a contradiction. Therefore t + r k. In particular, k r t. Apply (k r-diintegration to G, and let H(G, k r be the reulting graph. Then H(G, t H(G, k r. If H(G, t = H(G, k r, then r k r N (G + (n r = f (n, k, k r max{f (n, k,, f (n, k, t} 1 by the convexity of f. Therefore, H(G, t i a proper ubgraph of H(G, k r, and there mut be a nonedge between a vertex in H(G, t and a vertex in H(G, k r. Among all uch pair, chooe x H(G, t and y H(G, k r to have a longet path P between them. A before, P contain at leat k 1 edge, and each neighbor of x in H(G, t and each neighbor of y in H(G, k r lie in P. Then G contain a cycle of length at leat min{k, (r 1 + (k r + 1} = k, a contradiction. 3 Proof of Corollary 1.5, Theorem 1.6, and Corollary 1.7 Proof of Corollary 1.5. Define g (n, k = n 1 k ( k 1 and t = k 1 g (n, k max{f (n, k, t, f (n, k, }.. One can check that when n k, Fix a graph G on n vertice with circumference le than k. If G i diconnected, imply apply induction to each component of G to obtain the deired reult. Therefore we may aume G i connected. We induct on the number of block of G. Firt uppoe k 5. If G i a block, i.e., -connected, then either n k 1, and o N (G ( V (G g (n, k, or n k, and o by Theorem 1.4, N (G max{f (n, k, t, f (n, k, } g (n, k. Otherwie, conider the block-cut tree of G the tree whoe vertice correpond to block of G uch that two vertice in the tree are adjacent if and only if the correponding block in G hare a vertex. Let B 1 be a block in G correponding to a leaf-vertex in the block-cut tree uch that B 1 and it complement are connected by the cut vertex v. Set B = G B 1 + {v}. Apply the induction hypothei to B 1 and B to obtain N (G = N (B 1 + N (B g ( B 1, k + g (n B 1 + 1, k = B ( 1 1 k 1 + (n B ( k 1 k k = g (n, k. If k = 4, then either G i a foret or G ha circumference 3. In the econd cae, each block of G i 5
either a triangle or an edge. Thu N (G g (n, k in both cae. The proof of Theorem 1.6 follow the ame tep a the proof of Theorem 1.4. A ome detail here will be omitted to prevent repetition, it i advied that the reader firt read the proof of Theorem 1.4. Proof of Theorem 1.6. Suppoe for contradiction that N (G > max{f (n, k 1, 1, f (n, k 1, t} where t = (k /. Let G 0 be the graph obtained by adding a dominating vertex v 0 adjacent to all of V (G. Then G 0 i -connected, ha n + 1 vertice, and contain no cycle of length k + 1 or greater. Let G be the k + 1-cloure of G 0 (i.e., add edge to G 0 until any additional edge create a cycle of length at leat k + 1. Denote by N (G the number of K in G that do not contain v 0. Thu N (G N (G 0 = N (G. Apply (t + 1-diintegration to G, where if neceary, we delete v 0 lat. Let H(G, t + 1 be the reulting graph of the diintegration. If H(G, t + 1 i empty, then at the time of deletion each vertex ha at mot t neighbor that are not v 0. Hence t t + 1 N (G (n (t f (n, k 1, t, 1 a contradiction. The ame argument a in the proof of Theorem 1.4 alo how that H(G, t + 1 i a complete graph, otherwie there would be a cycle of length at leat (t + (k 1 + in G. Note that v 0 mut be contained in H(G, t + 1 a it i adjacent to all vertice in G. Set V (H(G, t + 1 = r where t + 3 r k 1 (and o k r 1. In particular, (k + 1 r t + 1. Apply (k + 1 r- diintegration to G. If H(G, t + 1 H(G, k + 1 r, then again we can find a cycle of length at leat (r 1 +k + r = k + 1. Otherwie, uppoe H(G, t+1 = H(G, k +1 r. In H(G, t+1, the number of -clique that do not include v 0 i ( r 1, and in V (G V (H(G, k + 1 r, every vertex had at mot k r neighbor that were not v 0 at the time of it deletion. We have ( ( r 1 k r N (G + (n + 1 r 1 = f (n, k 1, k r max{f (n, k 1, 1, f (n, k 1, t}, a contradiction. Proof of Corollary 1.7. Define h (n, k = n k 1 ( k 1, and note that when n k, h (n, k max{f (n, k 1, t, f (n, k 1, 1}. We induct on the number of component in G. Firt uppoe k 4. If G i connected, then either n k 1, in which cae N (G ( V (G h (n, k, or n k and N (G max{f (n, k 1, 1, f (n, k 1, t} h (n, k. Otherwie if G i not connected, let C 1 be a component of G. Then N (G = N (C 1 + N (G C 1 h ( C 1, k + h (n C 1, k = h (n, k. If k = 3 (the cae k are not intereting, then the longet path in G ha two vertice. It follow that G i the union of a matching and iolated vertice. Therefore N (G h (n, k. 6
