The spectral radius ad the maximum degree of irregular graphs arxiv:math/ v1 [math.co] 22 Feb 2007 Sebastia M. Cioabă Departmet of Mathematics Uiversity of Califoria, Sa Diego La Jolla, CA Submitted: Ja 20, 2007; Accepted:?? MR Subject Classificatios: 05C50, 15A18 Abstract Let G be a irregular graph o vertices with maximum degree ad diameter D. We show that λ 1 > 1 where λ 1 is the largest eigevalue of the adjacecy matrix of G. We also study the effect of addig or removig few edges o the spectral radius of a regular graph. 1 Prelimiaries Our graph otatio is stadard (see West [22]). For a graph G, we deote by λ i (G) the i-th largest eigevalue of its adjacecy matrix ad we call λ 1 (G) the spectral radius of G. If G is coected, the the positive eigevector of orm 1 correspodig to λ 1 (G) is called the pricipal eigevector of G. The spectral radius of a coected graph has bee well studied. Results i the literature coect it with the chromatic umber, the idepedece umber ad the clique umber of a coected graph [9, 11, 12, 17, 23]. Recetly, it has bee show that the spectral radius also plays a importat role i modelig virus propagatio i etworks [10, 21]. I this paper, we are iterested i the coectio betwee the spectral radius ad the maximum degree of a coected graph G. I particular, we study the spectral radius of graphs obtaied from -regular graphs o vertices by deletig a small umber of edges or loops. The Erdős-Réyi graph ER(q) is a example of such a graph, see [9, 15] ad the refereces withi for more details o its spectral radius ad other iterestig properties. 2 It is a well kow fact that λ 1 (G) (G) with equality if ad oly if G is regular. It is atural to ask how small (G) λ 1 (G) ca be whe G is irregular. Cioabă, Gregory ad Nikiforov [5] proved that if G is a irregular graph o vertices, with maximum degree ad diameter D, the λ 1 > 1 (D + 1 2m ) 1 + where m is the umber of edges of G. This result improved previous work of Stevaović [20], Zhag [24] ad Alo ad Sudakov [1]. I [5], the authors cojecture that λ 1 > 1 (1) I this paper, we prove this cojecture. Usig iequality (1), we improve some recet results of Nikiforov [16] regardig the spectral radius of a subgraph of a regular graph. We also ivestigate the spectral radius of a graph obtaied from a regular graph by addig a edge. For recet results coectig the spectral radius of a geeral (ot ecessarily regular) graph G ad that of a subgraph of G, see [16]. 2 The spectral radius ad the maximum degree The followig theorem is the mai result of this sectio. Theorem 2.1. Let G be a coected irregular graph with vertices, maximum degree ad diameter D. The λ 1 (G) > 1 Proof. Let x be the pricipal eigevector for G. Let s be a vertex of G such that x s = max i [] x i. Sice G is ot regular, it follows that x s > 1. If the degree of s is ot, the λ 1 x s = j s x j ( 1)x s which implies λ 1 1 > 1 ad proves the theorem. From ow o, we will assume that the degree of s is. Suppose first that G cotais at least two vertices whose degree is ot. Let u ad v be two vertices of G whose degree is ot. Let P : u = i 0,i 1,...,i r = s be a shortest path from u to s i H. Obviously, r D. Let Q be a shortest path from v to s i H. Let t be the smallest idex j such that i j is o Q. Obviously, t {0,...,r}. the electroic joural of combiatorics 13 (2006), #R00 2
If t = 0, the the distace from u to s is at most D 1 (this meas r D 1), ad applyig a similar argumet to the oe i [5], we obtai that λ 1 (G) = = x 2 j j=1 kl E(G) 2x k x l ( d i )x 2 i + i=1 kl E(G) r 1 x 2 u + (x ij+1 x ij ) 2 j=0 ( x u + r 1 j=0 (x i j+1 x ij ) r +1 (x k x l ) 2 ) 2 = x2 i r r +1 > 1 If t 1, we may assume without ay loss of geerality that t = d(u,i t ) d(v,i t ). Let Q v,it deote the sub-path of Q which coects v to i t. Usig the Cauchy-Schwarz iequality, it follows that λ 1 (G) = ( d i )x 2 i + (x k x l ) 2 x 2 u +x2 v + (x k x l ) 2 i=1 kl E(G) t 1 (x 2 u + (x ij x ij+1 ) 2 )+(x 2 v + j=0 x2 i t t+1 + x 2 i t d(v,i t )+1 + (x i t x s ) 2 r t 2x2 i t t+1 + (x s x it ) 2 r t kl E(Q v,it ) kl E(G) (x k x l ) 2 )+ r (x ij x ij+1 ) 2 The right had-side is a quadratic fuctio i x it which attais its miimum whe x it =. This implies that (t+1)x s 2r t+1 λ 1 (G) > 2x 2 s 2r t+1 x2 s r sice t 1. Because x s > 1 ad r D, we obtai λ 1 (G) > 1 This fiishes the proof i the case that G has at least two vertices whose degree is ot. Assume ow that G cotais exactly oe vertex whose degree is less tha. Let w be a vertex whose pricipal eigevector etry is miimum. The d w < because x w > λ 1 x w = j wx j d w x w j=t the electroic joural of combiatorics 13 (2006), #R00 3
Recall that x s = max i [] x i. Let γ = xs x w. We may assume that γ > D. Otherwise, by summig the equalities λ 1 x i = j i x j over all i [] we have λ 1 = ( d w)x w i=1 x i > x w x s = 1 γ 1 which proves the theorem. We may also assume that d(w,s) = D because otherwise by applyig a argumet similar to the oe of the previous case, we ca prove the theorem. We claim there exists j s such that x j < 1. Otherwise, let j s such that d(j,w) = D 1. The applyig the argumet from the previous case gives which agai proves the theorem. Sice x j < 1 ad j s, we have λ 1 > x2 j D > 1 λ 1 x s = l s x l < ( 1)x s + 1 which implies λ 1 > 1 1 x s If the right-had side is at least 1 1, the we are doe. Otherwise, 1 x s < 1 implies x s < D 1 Sice x s = max i [] x i,x w = mi i [] x i, we have that (2) ( 1)x 2 s +x2 w x 2 l = 1 l=1 which implies x 2 w ( 1)2 1 = ( 1)2 ( 1) 2 ( 1) 2 ( 1) 2 = (D2 2D)+1 ( 1) 2 (3) Assume D 3. From (2) ad (3), we get that γ 2 = x2 s x 2 w < D 2 (D 2 2D)+1 < D2 Thus, γ < D which is a cotradictio with the earlier assumptio that γ > D. This proves the theorem for D 3. the electroic joural of combiatorics 13 (2006), #R00 4
For D = 2, lookig at the square of the adjacecy matrix of G we get which implies λ 2 1x s ( 2 1)x s +x w (4) λ γ < sice γ 2. Note that iequality (4) holds because there is at least oe path of legth 2 from s to w. Thus, λ < If 2, the we are doe. Suppose the that < 2. The the vertex s has at least two eighbours at distace 1 from the vertex w. We deduce that λ 2 1 x s ( 2 2)x s +2x w which implies λ γ 2 1 Thus, λ < 1 2 < 1 which completes the proof of the theorem. Because λ 1 (G) = (G) whe G is regular, the followig result is a immediate cosequece of Theorem 2.1. Corollary 2.2. Let G be a -regular graph ad e be a edge of G such that G \ e is coected. The 2 > λ 1(G\e) > 1 where D is the diameter of G\e. The previous results improve Theorems 4-6 obtaied by Nikiforov i a recet paper [16]. If f,g : N [0,+ ) we write f() = O(g()) if there is c > 0 ad 0 > 0 such that f() cg() for 0 ad we write f() = Θ(g()) if f() = O(g()) ad g() = O(f()). Uderthesamehypothesisasthepreviouscorollary, if isfixedadg\eiscoected, thethediameterdofg\eisatleastlog 1 +O(1). Ithiscase, weobtaithefollowig estimates 2 > λ 1(G\e) > O ( ) 1 log 1 It seems likely that the upper boud gives the right order of magitude for λ 1 (G\e), but provig this fact is a ope problem. the electroic joural of combiatorics 13 (2006), #R00 5
If = Θ() ad G \ e is coected, the the diameter D of G \ e is O(1). To see this cosider a path i 0,...,i D of legth D i G \ e. For 0 j D, let N j deote the eighborhood of vertex j i G\e. It follows that for j 0 (mod 3),0 j D, the sets N j are pairwise disjoit. Also, for all but at most two j s, we have N j =. These facts imply that ( ) D +1 (D +1) N j > 2 +2( 1) = Thus, j 0 (mod 3) D < 3(+2) = O(1) Hece, i this case, our estimates imply that ( ) 1 λ 1 (G\e) = Θ Note that the previous argumet ca be also used to show that if = Θ() ad H is a coected graph obtaied from a -regular graph o vertices by deletig a costat umber of edges, the ( ) 1 λ 1 (H) = Θ 3 Addig a edge to a regular graph I this sectio, we aalyze the effect of addig a edge o the spectral radius of a regular graph. We eed differet techiques i this case because the spectral radius will be closer to the miimum degree tha to the maximum degree of the graph. Theorem 3.1. Let H be a coected, k-regular graph ad e / E(H). If G is the graph obtaied from H by addig the edge e ad k λ 2 (H) > 1, the ( ) > λ 1 (G) λ 1 (H) > 2 ( ) k λ 2 (H) (5) 2(k +1) Proof. The lower boud follows by applyig the followig result obtaied by Nikiforov [18]. See also [4] for related results. Theorem 3.2. Let G be a irregular graph with vertices ad m edges havig maximum degree. If G has at least two vertices of degree ad at least two vertices of degree less tha, the λ 1 (G) > 2m + 2 4m+1 For the upper boud, we use the followig result of Maas [14] (see also Theorem i [6] ad [3]). the electroic joural of combiatorics 13 (2006), #R00 6
Theorem 3.3 (Maas [14]). Let x be the pricipal eigevector of a graph H ad let i ad j be two o-adjacet vertices i H. The λ 1 (H +ij) λ 1 (H) < 1+δ β (6) where ad δ satisfies the equatio β = λ 1 (H) λ 2 (H) δ(1+δ)(2+δ) (x i +x j ) 2 +δ(2+δ +2x i x j ) = β By applyig the previous theorem ad usig the fact that the pricipal eigevector of H = G\e has all etries equal to 1, we obtai that If k λ 2 (H) = β > 1, we obtai that Thus, 2β δ < 2β = 2(k λ 2(H)) β 1 k λ 2 (H) 1 which proves the theorem. λ 1 (G) λ 1 (H)) < 1+δ β = 2β δ β = δ(1+δ)(2+δ) (δ +2) ( ) = δ(1+δ) δ + 2 δ + 2 < 1+δ. Hece, we deduce that λ 1 (G) λ 1 (G\e) < 2(k λ 2(H)) (k λ 2 (H) 1) For k 3 fixed ad ǫ > 0, Friedma [8] proved that most k-regular graphs H have λ 2 (H) 2 k 1 + ǫ. This implies that for most k-regular graphs H ad for each e / E(H), we have ( ) 1 λ 1 (H +e) λ 1 (H) = Θ (7) If H is a k-regular graph with k λ 2 (H) 1, the (7) might ot hold. This is true at least for k = 2 as see by the graph G o vertices which is obtaied from a cycle o vertices by addig a edge betwee two vertices at distace 2. It follows from the work of Simić ad Kocić [19] (see also [6] equatio (3.4.5) o page 63) that lim λ 1(G ) = while λ 1 (C ) = 2 so clearly λ 1 (G ) λ 1 (C ) Θ ( 1 ). the electroic joural of combiatorics 13 (2006), #R00 7
4 Fial Remarks It is worth metioig that there are ifiite families of irregular graphs with maximum degree such that λ 1 c, where c is a absolute costat. Cioabă, Gregory ad Nikiforov [5] describe such a family with c = 4π 2 while Liu, She ad Wag [13] foud a ifiite family with c = 3π 2. It has yet to be determied what the best such costat c ca be for all ad D. Note that the argumet of Theorem 2.1 ca be exteded easily to multigraphs. From the proof of Theorem 2.1, it is easy to see that if oe ca fid better upper bouds for the distace betwee vertices correspodig to the extreme etries of the pricipal eigevector of a irregular graph G, the oe ca improve the result of Theorem 2.1. However, there are ifiite families of irregular graphs for which the distace betwee such vertices equals the diameter. We describe oe such family i the ext paragraph. For k 2, cosider the cycle o = 2k + 1 vertices with vertex set {1,...,2k +1} ad edges {i,i+1} for 1 i 2k ad {2k+1,1}. Add the edges {k,k+2},{k+1,k+3} ad for k 3, the edges {i,2k + 3 i} for 2 i k 1. The resultig graph G has maximum degree 3 ad 1 is the oly vertex whose degree is 2. It ca be show easily by iductio that if x is the pricipal eigevector of G, the x 1 = mi i [] x i ad x k+1 = x k+2 = max i [] x i. Note that d(1,k + 1) = d(1,k + 2) = k which equals the diameter of G. Whe = 7, the graph obtaied by the above procedure is show i Figure 1 with its vertices labeled by their etries i the pricipal eigevector. Note that although the distace betwee vertices correspodig to extreme etries of the pricipal eigevector 1 equals the diameter, there are vertices whose eigevector etry is at least 7 = which are at distace less tha the diameter from the vertex whose eigevector etry is miimum. If this fact would be true for ay irregular graph, it would imply Theorem Figure 1: A irregular graph ad its pricipal eigevector It would be iterestig to determie the precise asymptotic behaviour of the spectral radius of a graph obtaied from a -regular graph o vertices by deletig a edge whe = o(). Aother problem of iterest is to fid the exact asymptotic behaviour of the spectral radius of a graph obtaied from a k-regular graph H by addig a edge whe k = Θ() or whe k λ 2 (H) 1. A slightly differet directio of research was take by Biyikoglu ad Leydold i [2] where they study the graphs which have the maximum spectral radius i the set of all the electroic joural of combiatorics 13 (2006), #R00 8
coected graphs with give degree sequece. I particular, the authors show that the maximum is icreasig with respect to the majorizatio order. Eve for graphs with simple degree sequeces, determiig the maximum spectral radius seems a otrivial problem.
