1 NEAR PERFECT MATCHINGS IN -UNIFORM HYPERGRAPHS arxiv: v3 [math.co] 6 Aug 2014 JIE HAN Abstract. Let H be a -uiform hypergraph o vertices where is a sufficietly large iteger ot divisible by. We prove that if the miimum ( 1)- degree of H is at least /, the H cotais a matchig with / edges. This cofirms a cojecture of Rödl, Rucińsi ad Szemerédi [13], who proved that miimum ( 1)-degree /+O(log) suffices. More geerally, we show that H cotais a matchig of size d if its miimum codegree is d < /, which is also best possible. 1. Itroductio Give 2, a -uiform hypergraph (i short, -graph) cosists of a vertex set V(H) ad a edge set E(H) ( ) V(H), where every edge is a -elemet subset of V(H). A matchig i H is a collectio of vertex-disjoit edges of H. A perfect matchig M i H is a matchig that covers all vertices of H. Clearly a perfect matchig i H exists oly if divides V(H). Whe does ot divide = V(H), we call a matchig M i H a ear perfect matchig if M = /. Give a -graph H with a set S of d vertices (where 1 d 1) we defie deg H (S) to be the umber of edges cotaiig S (the subscript H is omitted if it is clear from the cotext). The miimum d-degree δ d (H) of H is the miimum of deg H (S) over all d-vertex sets S i H. We refer to δ 1 (H) as the miimum codegree of H. Over the last few years there has bee a strog focus i establishig miimum d-degree thresholds that force a perfect matchig i a -graph [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 12, 13, 14]. I particular, Rödl, Rucińsi ad Szemerédi [13] determied the miimum codegree threshold that esures a perfect matchig i a -graph o vertices for all 3 ad sufficietly large N. The threshold is 2 +C, where C {3/2,2,5/2,3} depeds o the values of ad. I cotrast, they proved that the miimum codegree threshold that esures a ear perfect matchig i a -graph o / N vertices is betwee ad +O(log). It is cojectured, i [13] ad [10, Problem 3.3], that this threshold is. I this ote we verify this cojecture. Theorem 1.1. For ay iteger 3, let be a sufficietly large iteger which is ot divisible by. Suppose H is a -uiform hypergraph o vertices with δ 1 (H). The H cotais a matchig of size. It is also atural to as for the miimum codegree threshold for the matchig umber of -graphs, amely, the size of a maximum matchig. For every -uiform hypergraph H o vertices, ν(h) δ 1 (H) if δ 1 (H) <. Proof. Let δ 1 (H) = c. We oly prove Corollary 1.3 i the cases whe 1 c 3, sice Theorem 1.2 covers the cases whe c 2 ad Theorem 1.1 covers the case whe δ 1 (H) = <. Let r mod such that 0 r 1. Note that H has +c vertices ad δ 1 (H ) = +c. Moreover, does ot divide +c sice 1 r+c <. We apply Theorem 1.1 o H ad get a ear perfect matchig M of H. Deletig up to c edges from M that cotai the ew vertices, we get a matchig i H of size c. I the secod case, we add c+1 vertices to H ad get H such that H cotais all edges of H ad all -sets cotaiig ay of these ew vertices. Note that H has +c+1 vertices ad δ 1 (H ) = +1 = +c+1. Moreover, does ot divide +c+1 sice +1 r+c Similarly we apply Theorem 1.1 o H ad getaearperfectmatchigm ofh. Deletiguptoc+1edgesfromM thatcotai the ew vertices, we get a matchig i H of size +1 (c+1) = c. It is easy to see that Theorem 1.1 ad Corollary 1.3 are best possible. For a iteger 0 d <, let H be a -graph with a partitio A B of the vertex set V(H) such that A = d ad E(H) cosists of all -tuples that itersect A. Sice every edge itersects A, we have ν(h) = δ 1 (H) = A = d. Let us describe this iterestig pheomeo by the followig dyamic process. Cosider a -graph H o vertices with E(H) = at the begiig ad add edges to E(H) gradually. Corollary 1.3 says ν(h) δ 1 (H) whe δ 1 (H) <. I order to guaratee a perfect matchig, δ 1 (H) eeds to be about /2 [13]. As a typical approach to obtai exact results, our proof of Theorem 1.1 cosists of a extremal case ad a oextremal case. We say that H is γ-extremal if V(H) cotais a idepedet subset B of order at least (1 γ) 1. Theorem 1.4 (Noextremal case). For ay iteger 3 ad costat γ > 0, there is a iteger 0 such that the followig holds. Let 0 be a iteger ot divisible by ad let H be a -vertex -graph with δ 1 (H) γ. If H is ot 5γ-extremal, the H cotais a ear perfect matchig.
3 NEAR PERFECT MATCHINGS IN -UNIFORM HYPERGRAPHS 3 Theorem 1.5 (Extremal case). For ay iteger 3, there exist a ǫ > 0 ad a iteger 1 such that the followig holds. Let 1 be a iteger ot divisible by ad let H be a -vertex -graph with δ 1 (H). If H is ǫ-extremal, the H cotais a ear perfect matchig. Theorem 1.1 follows from Theorem 1.4 ad Theorem 1.5 immediately. We prove Theorem 1.4 by the absorbig method, iitiated by Rödl, Rucińsi ad Szemerédi [11]. Give a set S of + 1 vertices, we call a edge e E(H) disjoit from S S-absorbig if there are two disjoit edges e 1 ad e 2 i E(H) such that e 1 S = 1, e 1 e = 1, e 2 S = 2, ad e 2 e = 2. Note that this is ot the absorbig i the usual sese because e 1 e 2 misses oe vertex of S e. Let us explai how such absorbig wors. Let S be a ( + 1)-set ad M be a matchig, where V(M) S =, which cotais a S-absorbig edge e. The M ca absorb S by replacig e i M by e 1 ad e 2 (oe vertex of e becomes ucovered). The followig absorbig lemma was proved i [13, Fact 2.3] with the coclusio that the umber of S-absorbig edges i M is at least 2. However, its proof shows that 2 ca be replaced by ay costat. Note that we do ot require that does ot divide i Lemma 1.6 ad Lemma 1.7. Lemma 1.6. [13, Absorbig lemma] For all c,γ > 0 there exist C > 0 ad 2 such that if H is a -graph with 2 vertices ad δ 1 (H) c, the there exists a matchig M i H of size M Clog ad such that for every (+1)-tuple S of vertices of H, the umber of S-absorbig edges i M is at least /γ. We also eed the followig lemma, which provides a matchig that covers all but a costat umber of vertices whe H is ot extremal. Lemma 1.7 (Almost perfect matchig). For ay iteger 3 ad costat γ > 0 the followig holds. Let H be a -vertex -graph such that is sufficietly large ad δ 1 (H) γ. If H is ot 2γ-extremal, the H cotais a matchig that covers all but at most 2 /γ vertices. Nowletuscompareourproofwiththeproofi[13],whichshowedthatδ 1 (H) + O(log) guaratees a ear perfect matchig. I [13], the authors first build a absorbig matchig of size Clog ad the apply Theorem 1.2 i the remaiig -graph. Fially, they absorb the leftover vertices ad get the ear perfect matchig. I our proof, istead of Theorem 1.2, we apply Lemma 1.7 after buildig the absorbig matchig. Lemma 1.7 oly requires a weaer degree coditio δ 1 (H) γ ad the coditio that H is ot extremal. We the hadle the extremal case separately. 2. Proof of Theorem 1.4 I this sectio we prove Theorem 1.4 with the help of Lemma 1.6 ad Lemma 1.7. Proof of Lemma 1.7. Let M = {e 1,e 2,...,e m } be a maximum matchig of size m i H. Let V be the set of vertices covered by M ad let U be the set of vertices which are ot covered by M. We assume that H is ot 2γ-extremal ad U > 2 /γ. Note that U is a idepedet set by the maximality of M. We arbitrarily partitio all but at most 2 vertices of U as disjoit ( 1)-sets A 1,...,A t where t = U 1 > γ.

Suppose {v ij } = e ij D for all j [l]. By the defiitio of D, we ca greedily pic A i1,...,a il such that {v ij } A ij E(H) for all j [l]. Let M be the matchig obtaied from replacig the edges e i1,...,e il by e 0 ad {v ij } A ij for j [l]. Thus, M has m+1 edges, cotradictig the maximality of M. Now we prove Theorem 1.4. Proof of Theorem 1.4. Suppose H is a -graph o / N vertices with δ 1 (H) / γ ad H is ot 5γ-extremal. I particular, γ < 1 5. Sice δ 1(H) 2, we first apply Lemma 1.6 o H with c = 1 2 ad fid the absorbig matchig M of size at most Clog such that for every set S of +1 vertices of H, the umber of S-absorbig edges i M is at least /γ. Let H = H[V(H)\V(M )] ad = V(H ). Note that δ 1 (H ) δ 1 (H) Clog > ( 1 2γ). If H is 4γ-extremal, amely, V(H ) cotais a idepedet set B of order at least (1 4γ) 1, the sice (1 4γ) 1 (1 5γ) 1, we get that H is 5γ-extremal, a cotradictio. Thus, H is ot 4γ-extremal ad we ca apply Lemma 1.7 o H with parameter 2γ ad get a matchig M i H that covers all but at most 2 /(2γ) vertices. Sice for every ( + 1)-tuple S i V(H), the umber of S-absorbig edges i M is at least /γ, we ca repeatedly absorb the leftover vertices (at most /(2γ) times, each time the umber of leftover vertices is reduced by ) util the umber of leftover vertices is at most (strictly less tha by the assumptio). Let M deote the absorbig matchig after the absorptio. The M M is the desired ear perfect matchig i H. 3. Proof of Theorem 1.5 We prove Theorem 1.5 i this sectio. We use the followig result of Pihuro [9], stated here i a less geeral form.

Let H be a -graph o vertices satisfyig δ 1 (H). Assume that H is ǫ-extremal, amely, there is a idepedet set S V(H) with S (1 ǫ) 1. We partitio V(H) as follows. Let α = ǫ 1/2. For each v B\V(M 1 ), we pic 2 arbitrary vertices from C ot covered by the existig matchig, ad a ucovered vertex v V to complete a edge ad add it to M 2. Sice δ 1 (H) ad the umber of vertices covered by the existig matchig is at most B α <, such a edge always exists. Our costructio guaratees that each edge i M 1 M 2 cotais at least oe vertex from B ad thus M 1 M 2 B. We claim that A 1 1 r ad A 2 2 r. To see the boud for A 1, we separate two cases depedig o t. If c < 1, the we pic c vertices from A, c 1 vertices from C, ad form a edge with some vertex from A C. I this case, A r decreases by c or c 1. The iteratio stops whe A r becomes 0 or 1 after at most s 2 s 2α steps. Note that we ca always form a edge i each step because the umber of covered vertices is at most B + 2α 3α < δ 1 (H). So we get a matchig M 3 of at most 2α edges. Step 3. The last matchig M 4. Now we have two cases, A 3 3 r = 0 or 1. I the first case, we will fid a matchig M 4 of size A 3 which leaves r vertices i C 3. I the secod case, we will fid a matchig M 4 of size A 3 1 which leaves oe vertex i A 3 ad r 1 vertices i C 3.
