Replacing the usual neutrino mixing angles and mass squared differences in the expressions for the vacuum oscillation probabilities with these ter mixing angles and mass squared differences gives an excellent approxiion to the oscillation probabilities in ter. Comparisons for TK, NOvA, THKK and DUNE are also given for neutrinos and anti-neutrinos, disappearance and appearance channels, normal ordering and inverted ordering. Keywords: Neutrino Physics, Neutrino Oscillations in Matter, CP violation

Replacing the usual neutrino mixing angles and mass squared differences in the expressions for the vacuum oscillation probabilities with these ter mixing angles and mass squared differences gives an excellent approxiion to the oscillation probabilities in ter. Higher orders are also easily calculated and provide several orders of magnitude improvement per order. In Section, we give the approxiion to the mixing angles and mass squared difference in ter and discuss how to use these to calculated the oscillation probabilities in ter both at 0th order and 1st order. We also give expansions of the mixing angles and mass squared differences in ter in powers of (a/ m ). In Section 3, we make a detailed comparison between the exact and the approxie oscillation probabilities in ter for the TK, NOvA, THKK and DUNE experiments. Section 4 is the Summary. 1
3 Mixing Angles and Mass Differences in Matter.1 Zeroth Order In this section, a simple and accurate way to evaluate oscillation probabilities, recently shown in [1], is given. 1 Details as to the why s and how s of this method are contained in that paper. The mixing angles in ter, which we denote by a θ 13 and θ 1 here, can also be calculated in the following way, using m ee cos θ 1 m 31 + sin θ 1 m 3, as follows, see []: cos θ 13 = (cos θ 13 a/ m ee) (cos θ13 a/ m ee) + sin θ 13, (.1.1) where a G F N e E ν is the standard ter potential, and cos θ 1 = (cos θ 1 a / m 1 ) (cos θ 1 a / m 1 ) + sin θ 1 cos ( θ 13 θ 13 ), (.1.) where a a cos θ13 + m ee sin ( θ 13 θ 13 ) is the θ 13 -modified ter potential for the 1- sector. In these two flavor rotations, both θ 13 and θ 1 are in range [0, π/]. θ 3 and δ are unchanged in ter for this approxiion. The neutrino mass squared differences in ter, i.e. the m jk denote by m jk, are given by in ter, which we m 1 = m 1 (cos θ 1 a / m 1 ) + sin θ 1 cos ( θ 13 θ 13 ), m 31 = m 31 + ( a 3 a ) + 1 ( m ) 1 m 1, (.1.3) m 3 = m 31 m 1 Note that the same square root 3 appears in both m 1 and sin θ1. To see that the m 31 and m 3 have the right asymptotic forms, use the fact that ( m 1 m 1 ) = a + O( m 1 ), for a m 1. In Fig. 1 and Fig. the values of a, a, sin θ13, sin θ1, m j and m jk as a function of the neutrino energy for a density of 3.0 g.cm 3. 1 In this note φ, ψ and λ jk of [1], are replaced with the more traditional notation θ 13 and θ 1 and m jk respectively. Vacuum values to be used in calculating m ee. 3 If a = 0, then θ 13 = θ 13 and since a = 0 then θ 1 = θ 1 and both = 1, also m jk = m jk for all (j, k) as required. The identity s θ = (1 cos θ)/ is useful for calculating both s θ and c θ.
4 To calculate the oscillation probabilities, to 0th order, use the above m jk instead of m jk and replace the vacuum MNS rix as follows U 0 MNS U 3 (θ 3 ) U 13 (θ 13, δ) U 1 (θ 1 ) U M MNS U 3 (θ 3 ) U 13 ( θ 13, δ) U 1 ( θ 1 ). That is, replace m jk m jk θ 13 θ 13 θ 1 θ 1, (.1.4) θ 3 and δ remain unchanged, it is that simple. We call this the 0th order DMP approxiion. These expressions are valid for both NO, m ee > 0 and IO, m ee < 0. For antineutrinos, just change the sign of a and δ. Our expansion parameter is sin( θ m 1 13 θ 13 ) sin θ 1 cos θ , (.1.5) m ee which is small and vanishes in vacuum, so that our perturbation theory reproduces the vacuum oscillation probabilities exactly. If P να ν β ( m 31, m 1, θ 13, θ 1, θ 3, δ) is the oscillation probability in vacuum then P να ν β ( m 31, m 1, θ 13, θ 1, θ 3, δ) is the oscillation probability in ter, i.e. use the same function but replace the mass squared differences and mixing angles with the ter values given in eq The resulting oscillation probabilities are identical to the zeroth order approxiion given in Denton, Minakata and Parke, [1].. Higher Orders If the 0th order is not accurate enough, going to 1st order is simple and gives another two orders of magnitude in accuracy. First the m jk remain unchanged but the mixing rix is modified by where the rix W 1 is given by U M MNS V U M MNS(1 + W 1 ), (..1) W 1 = sin( θ 13 θ 13 ) s 1 c 1 m s 1 e iδ / m c 1 e iδ / m 3 + s 1 e +iδ / m 31 c 1 e +iδ / m 3 0. (..) where s 1 = sin θ 1 and c 1 = cos θ 1 etc. The m jk and the V -mixing rix can be used to calculate the oscillation probabilities and improves the accuracy by two orders of magnitude. We call this the 1st order DMP approxiion. The next highest order, nd order, is also discussed in [1]. 3

E ν 0 (E ν 0) is for neutrinos (anti-neutrinos). E ν = 0 is the vacuum values for both neutrinos and anti-neutrinos..3 Expansions in a/ m If a m ee, that is when E ν 11 ( ρ / 3 g cm 3) GeV, we have, [ ] sin θ13 s c 13(a/ m ee) + 3(c 13 s 13)c 13(a/ m ee) + O(a/ m ee) 3 ) [ ] sin ( θ 13 θ 13 ) s 13c 13(a/ m ee) 1 + (c 13 s 13)(a/ m ee) + O(a/ m ee) (.3.1) a ac 13 [1 s 13(a/ m ee) s 13(c 13 s 13)(a/ m ee) + O(a/ m ee) ] 3 4
6 Figure : In the inverted ordering (IO): Top left, the ter potentials, a and a, top right, sine squared of mixing angles in ter, sin θjk, bottom left, the mass squared eigenvalues in ter, m j, and bottom right, the mass squared differences in ter, m jk. E ν 0 (E ν 0) is for neutrinos (anti-neutrinos). E ν = 0 is the vacuum values for both neutrinos and anti-neutrinos. up to O(a/ m ee). The expansion for a can be used to calculate m 31 as follows, [ m m 31 + ( a a ) + 1 m ] 1 m 1 a, a, a > 0 31 = [ m 31 + ( a a ) + 1 m ] (.3.) 1 m 1 + a, a, a < 0 where the quantities in [ ] is of O( m 1 ) for all values of E ν. As can be seen from Fig. 1 and Fig., both m 1 and sin θ1 make rapid changes in +150 MeV region. Well away from this region, when a m 1, that is E ν 150 ( ρ / 3 g cm 3) MeV, we can write m 1 a m 1 cos θ 1, (.3.3) for a m 1 cos θ 1 m 1. This can be used to obtain the asymptotic values for neutrino mass squareds in ter, which agree with the values given in [1]. 5
7 3 Oscillation Probabilities 3.1 Comparisons Neutrino parameters relevant for oscillations: m ee = ± ev, m 1 = ev sin θ 1 = 0.31, sin θ 3 = 0.43 sin θ 13 = 0.0, δ = 7 = π/5 (3.1.1) Where m ee > 0 gives a normal ordering (NO) neutrino spectrum and m ee < 0 for inverted ordering (IO). Note we have avoided the special points: θ 3 = π/4 as well as δ = 0, ±π/, π, so as not to overestie the precision. We consider four experimental setups: to be comprehensive, the energy windows are chosen to be wider than that accessible for a particular experiment. TK & THK: with baseline, L = 95 km, neutrino energy 0. < E ν /GeV < 3.0, and density, ρ =.3 g.cm 3. See Fig. 3, 4. NOvA: with baseline, L = 810 km, neutrino energy 0.6 < E ν /GeV < 4.0, and density, ρ = 3.0 g.cm 3. See Fig. 5, 6. THKK: with baseline, L = 1050 km, neutrino energy 0.3 < E ν /GeV < 5.0, and density, ρ = 3.0 g.cm 3. See Fig. 7, Fig. 8. DUNE: with baseline, L = 1300 km, neutrino energy 0.5 < E ν /GeV < 7.0, and density, ρ = 3.0 g.cm 3. See Fig. 9, 10. In these figures we have considered the channels ν µ disappearance and ν e appearance for neutrinos and anti-neutrinos and for both NO and IO. Each figure consists of three panels: the top panel is the exact oscillation probabilities in ter from Zaglauer and Schwarzer, [3], as well as the exact vacuum oscillation probability. The middle (bottom) panel shows the difference (fractional difference) between 1. the exact, [3], and vacuum oscillation probabilities (black),. the exact and the 0th order DMP approxiion, [1] (red), 3. the exact and the 1st order DMP approxiion, [1] (green). In the fractional differences, the denominator is the average of the two probabilities being compared. In Fig, 3 to Fig. 10, the dips in middle and bottom panels appear when P changes sign. In Table 1, we give the maximum difference and fractional difference of the 0th order approxiion to the exact probability. 6
8 TK/HK NOvA THKK DUNE max P max P/P Table 1: The maximum P and P/P at 0th order in the DMP approxiion. The largest fraction difference occurs at oscillation maximum for ν µ disappearance channel, where the oscillation probability is a few %. None of the experiments included here, TK, NOvA, THKK and DUNE will be within an order a magnitude of being sensitive to any of these differences. 4 Summary In summary, the simple 0th order approxiion of DMP, [1], is sufficiently accurate for all of the accelerator based neutrino oscillation experiments operating or planned: TK, NOvA, THKK and DUNE. First order, which is also simple to use, improves the accuracy by a further two orders of magnitude for these experiments. 5 Acknowledgements This manuscript has been authored by Fermi Research Alliance, LLC under Contract No. DE-AC0-07CH11359 with the U.S. Department of Energy, Office of Science, Office of High Energy Physics.
