5 INTRODUCTION The morbidity data in this report represent monthly information reported by the individual Pacific Island Health Departments to the South Pacific Epidemiological Health Information Service (SPEHIS) using a standard form designed for reporting certain notifiable diseases. The accuracy of the reporting (that is, the number of cases that are reported to SPEHIS compared to the actual number) varies considerably depending on the disease and the resources of the Pacific Island country or territory concerned. All users of the information reported should take into account the fact that these are, in general, developing countries which are evolving their own epidemiological surveillance programmes, and should interpret the data in this light. Morbidity rates (per population) have not been calculated, in order to discourage unjustified comparisons. Any additional specific information relating to the reported material can be obtained directly from the health department of the country or territory concerned or from the Secretariat of the Pacific Community. The population estimates listed for each country and territory were obtained from the SPC Demography/Population Programme's unpublished mid-year 1995 population estimates. The material contained in the tables consists of the monthly figures for each country or territory and disease as reported to SPEHIS during the year The reports are complete, except as noted. When no case was reported, 0 was entered in the tables. A blank entry indicates that no data were entered in the SPEHIS monthly reports. In 1992, due to the evolving epidemiological context and in accordance with the World Health Organization requirements for the surveillance of the diseases targeted by the Expanded Programme on Immunisation, it was decided that four new conditions would be entered into the SPEHIS reporting system. These were: AIDS, cholera, diphtheria and poliomyelitis. Implementation of the system as amended started in January 1993.
