CATERINA DOGLIONI - LUND UNIVERSITY WITH ELSE LYTKEN, KATJA MANKINEN, TRINE POULSEN, EVA HANSEN, ASTRID ORDELL, ELENI SKORDA, ZHIYING LI International Masterclasses for particle physics on the Day of Girls and Women in

The Lund particle physics group ATLAS experiment The Lund particle physics group: The Large Hadron Collider ALICE experiment LDMX experiment!2

My research (the DARKJETS project) I look for DARK matter related particles (for example those originating JETS) using real-time analysis techniques Known particle Dark matter(-related) particle Increase in amount of data collected thanks to real-time analysis techniques Known particle Dark matter(-related) particle but this talk is about none of this! It is about how we communicate our research in an attempt to show that everyone can become a particle physicist!3

The IPPOG Masterclasses What is a Masterclass? - A full day in which high school students become high energy physicists for a day - Usually advertised and hosted by universities to local high schools - Program consists of: - talks from local physicists - data analysis from one of the LHC experiments - combination of data with other institutes - videoconference with CERN - Lund participates every year, joint effort between theory and experimental particle physics groups Other similar events: - Data analysis on World Wide Data Day:

International day of girls and women in science The Lund University particle physics group started organizing activities activities for this day in 2017, in collaboration with the local science center Vattenhallen 2018: joined IPPOG Masterclass activity with a Masterclass hosted by women scientists and open to all genders!5

Masterclass 2018: attendance and groupings February 11th (Day of Girls and Women in Science): ~20 participants March 8th (regular Masterclass): ~20 participants only one of the many weeks offered: a total of students participating!6

Masterclass 2018: talks by physicists and discussion Talk about experimental physics Talks about theoretical physics Short talk on inclusive and collaborative science Discussion and Q&A careers in science!7

Masterclass 2018: data analysis Students work in pairs to recognize events from proton-proton collisions at the LHC - candidate Higgs boson events - events from Standard Model processes They enter their results in an electronic spreadsheet The discussion of results involves combining the results with other institutes the (statistical) power of teamwork!8

Masterclass 2018: videoconference Moderators located at CERN ask questions about the data analysis to the groups, answer questions from the students and finish the day with a quiz!9

Masterclass 2018 on Fysikaktuellt (09/18) Thanks to Margareta Kesselberg!!10

Masterclasses on

Masterclass 2019: plans? Masterclasses 2019: February 19th, We still have time to discuss here and implement improvements Some initial points for discussion: - Should we include women-in-physics-specific" discussions? - How to be more inclusive (women-centered diversity-centered)? - Are other Nordic particle physics institutes interested in advertising such events together? - (after talking to Anna L.): Can we do online versions? - outreach is a women thing (says no one ever)!12

Thank you for your attention! 13!13
