OCTONIONIC QUANTUM MECHANICS AND COMPLEX GEOMETRY Stefano De Leo a,b and Khaled Abdel-Khalek a a Dipartimento di Fisia - Università di Lee b Istituto Nazionale di Fisia Nuleare - Sezione di Lee - Lee, 73100, Italy - Revised Version, July 1996 The use of omplex geometry allows us to obtain a onsistent formulation of otonioni quantum mehanis OQM. In our otonioni formulation we solve the hermitiity problem and define an appropriate momentum operator within OQM. The nonextendability of the ompleteness relation and the norm onservation is also disussed in details. arxiv:hep-th/960903v1 3 Sep 1996 I. INTRODUCTION In the early thirties, in order to explain the novel phenomena of that time, namely β deay and the strong interations, Jordan [1] introdued a nonassoiative but ommutative algebra as a basi blok for a new quantum theory. With the disovery that 3 3 hermitian otonioni matries realize the Jordan postulate [,3], otonions appeared, for the first time, in quantum mehanis. The hope of applying nonassoiative algebras to physis was soon dashed with the Fermi theory of the β deay and with the Yukawa model of nulear fore. Otonions disappeared from physis as soon after being introdued. During the early sixties, Finkelstein et al. [4,5] tried to extend the standard quantum mehanis by using the quaternioni field. The main diffiulty, within their framework, was the non existene of proper tensor produts for quaternioni states. Then, with the quark revolution, new problems, like quark onfinement, appeared. Gürsey and Günaydin [6] tried to explain this problem on a fundamental level by investigating the possibility of onstruting a onsistent otonioni quantum mehanis. An important step towards a generalization of standard quantum theories is the use of omplex salar produts [7] or omplex geometry as alled by Rembieliński [8]. Without it we annot define a onsistent tensor produt. Nonassoiative numbers are diffiult to manipulate and so the use of the otonioni field within OQM is non-trivial. Obviously, if we are not being able to onstrut a suitable OQM, otonions will remain beautiful ghosts in searh of a physial inarnation. In this work, we overome the problems due to the nonassoiativity of the otonioni algebra. Both the quantum mehanis postulates and the otonions nonassoiativity property will be respeted. Is there an aeptable generi otonioni quantum theory? Do otonioni quantum theories neessitate omplex geometry? At this stage these questions lak answers and the aim of our work is to larify these points. This artile is organized as follows: In setion II, we give a brief introdution to the otonioni division algebra and introdue barred otonions. After this mathematial disussion, in setion III, we show how the omplex geometry, the main tool to obtain a suitable formulation of OQM, allows us to overome the hermitiity problem. In this setion we also introdue the appropriate definition for the momentum operator. In setion IV, we disuss the otonioni Hilbert spae and disprove the standard objetions onerning the nonextendability of ompleteness relation and norm onservation to otonioni quantum mehanis. The future developments are drawn in the final setion. II. OCTONIONIC ALGEBRA AND BARRED OCTONIONS A lassial theorem [9] states that the only division algebra over the reals are algebras of dimensions 1,, 4 and 8, the only assoiative division algebras over the reals are R, C and H quaternions, whereas the nonassoiative algebras inlude the otonions O an interesting disussion onerning nonassoiative algebras is presented in [10]. In this paper we will deal with otonions and their generalizations. deleos@le.infn.it khaled@le.infn.it S. De Leo and K. Abdel-Khalek - pag. 1
We summarize our notation for the otonioni algebra and introdue the onept of barred operators. There is a number of equivalent ways to represent the otonions multipliation table. Fortunately, it is always possible to hoose an orthonormal basis e 0,...,e 7 suh that O = r 0 + where e m are elements obeying the nonommutative and nonassoiative algebra 7 r m e m r 0,...,7 reals, 1 m=1 e m e n = δ mn +ǫ mnp e p m, n, p = 1,...,7, with ǫ mnp totally antisymmetri and equal to unity for the seven ombinations 13, 145, 176, 46, 57, 347 and 365 eah yle represents a quaternioni subalgebra. The otonioni onjugate O is given by O = r 0 7 r m e m. 3 m=1 Let us now introdue the onept of barred otonions. Working with nonommutative algebras, we must distinguish between left and right multipliation e m O O e m. It is appropriate to indiate the left-ation of the otonioni imaginary units by and the right-ation by e m, 4 1 e m [ 1 e m O O e m ]. 5 In reent papers [11,1] the suessful appliations of barred quaternions in quantum mehanis, field theory and gauge theories suggest us to investigate possible potentialities of otonioni barred numbers. III. OCTONIONIC MOMENTUM OPERATOR We begin this setion by presenting an apparently hopeless problem related to the nonassoiativity of the otonioni field. Working in quantum mehanis we require that an antihermitian operator satisfies the following relation dx ψ Aφ = dx Aψ φ. 6 In otonioni quantum mehanis OQM we an immediately verify that represents an antihermitian operator with all the properties of a translation operator. Nevertheless, while in omplex CQM and quaternioni QQM quantum mehanis we an define a orresponding hermitian operator multiplying by an imaginary unit the operator, one enounters in OQM the following problem: no imaginary unit, e m, represents an antihermitian operator. In fat, the nonassoiativity of the otonioni algebra implies, in general for arbitrary ψ and φ dx ψ e m φ dx e m ψ φ = dx ψ e m φ m = 1,...,7. 7 This ontrasts with the situation within omplex and quaternioni quantum mehanis. Suh a diffiulty is overome by using omplex projetion of the salar produt omplex geometry, with respet to one of our imaginary units. We break the symmetry between the seven imaginary units e 1,..., e 7 and hoose as projetion plane that one S. De Leo and K. Abdel-Khalek - pag.
haraterized by 1, e 1. The new salar produt is quikly obtained performing, in the standard definition, the following substitution dx dx 1 e 1 e 1 dx. Working in OQM with omplex geometry, e 1 represents an antihermitian operator. In order to simplify the proof we write the otonioni funtions ψ and φ as follows: The antihermitiity of e 1 is shown if ψ = ψ 1 +e ψ +e 4 ψ 3 +e 6 ψ 4, φ = φ 1 +e φ +e 4 φ 3 +e 6 φ 4, [ ψ 1,...,4 and φ 1,...,4 C1, e 1 ]. dx ψ e 1 φ = dx e 1 ψ φ. 8 Inthepreviousequationtheonlynonvanishingtermsarerepresentedbydiagonalterms ψ 1 φ 1, ψ φ, ψ 3 φ 3, ψ 4 φ 4. In fat, off-diagonal terms, like ψ φ 3, ψ 3 φ 4, are killed by the omplex projetion, ψ e [e 1 e 4 φ 3 ] α e +α 3 e 3 α 4 e 4 +α 5 e 5 α 6 e 6 +α 7 e 7, [ψ 3 e 4e 1 ]e 6 φ 4 β 4 e 4 +β 5 e 5 β 6 e 6 +β 7 e 7 β e +β 3 e 3, [ α,...,7 and β,...,7 R ]. The diagonal terms give dx ψ e 1 φ = ψ 1 e 1φ 1 ψ e [e 1 e φ ] ψ 3 e 4[e 1 e 4 φ 3 ] ψ 4 e 6[e 1 e 6 φ 4 ], dx e 1 ψ φ = ψ 1 e 1φ 1 [ψ e e 1 ]e φ [ψ 3 e 4e 1 ]e 4 φ 3 [ψ 4 e 6e 1 ]e 6 φ 4. The parenthesis in 9a-b are not of relevane sine ψ 1 e 1φ 1 1, e 1 is a omplex number, ψ e e 1 e φ subalgebra 13, ψ 3 e 4e 1 e 4 φ 3 subalgebra 145, ψ 4 e 6e 1 e 6 φ 4 subalgebra 176 are quaternioni numbers. The above-mentioneddemonstrationdoesnotworkforthe imaginaryunits e,..., e 7 breakingthe symmetrybetween the seven otonioni imaginary units. Now, we an define an hermitian operator multiplying by e 1 the operator. However, suh an operator is not expeted to ommute with the Hamiltonian, whih will be, in general, an otonioni quantity. The final step towards an appropriate definition of the momentum operator is represented by hoosing as imaginary unit the barred operator 1 e 1 the antihermitiity proof is very similar to the previous one. In OQM with omplex geometry the the appropriate momentum operator is then given by 9a 9b p e Obviously, in order to write equations relativistially ovariant, we must treat the spae omponents and time in the same way, hene we are obliged to modify the standard QM operator, i t, by the following substitution and so the otonioni Dira equation beomes i t t e 1, t ψe 1 = α pψ+mβψ p e The possibility to write a onsistent momentum operator represents for us an impressive argument in favor of the use of a omplex geometry in formulating OQM. Besides, suh a omplex geometry gives us a welome quadrupling of solutions. In fat, ψ, e ψ, e 4 ψ, e 6 ψ ψ C1, e 1 represent now omplex-orthogonal solutions. Therefore, we have the possibility to write a one-omponent otonioni Dira equation in whih all four standard Dira free-partile solutions appear [13]. S. De Leo and K. Abdel-Khalek - pag. 3
IV. OCTONIONIC HILBERT SPACE In the early seventies, Gürsey and Günaydin [6] have made an attempt to extend the underlying number field of quantum mehanis from omplex numbers to otonions. The main results are the following: One an realize the representations of the Poinaré group over an otonioni Hilbert spae with omplex salar produt whih has an automorphism group SU3. Suh otonioni Hilbert spae an be divided into an observable subspae orresponding to the usual omplex Hilbert spae CHS of quantum mehanis and an unobservable subspae orresponding to the nonassoiative omponents of the underlying otonioni algebra. Rembieliński [8] established the isomorphism between Otonioni Hilbert Spae OHS with omplex geometry and the standard omplex Hilbert spae arrying the self-representation of the group U4. The otonioni struture is appropriately defined allowing a onsistent tensor produt of OHS. In summary, life is not easy over generi OHS, we annot define in a onise way tensor produt and there is no notion of hermitiity. But using omplex geometry, all these problems soon vanish and our OHS behaves in suitable way. We now give two examples of plaes where the nonassoiativity of otonioni number is overome by adopting omplex salar produts. A first objetion, to the nonextendability to an otonioni formulation for the Hilbert spae, onerns the ompleteness relation [14, pag. 50]. In writing the ompleteness formula < ψ φ > = < ψ l η l >< η l φ > = l < ψ η l > < η l φ >, 1 we have assumed, in moving parentheses, that produt of three fators is independent of the order of multipliation. If we take a two-dimensional Hilbert spae with the following orthonormal states ψ > = 1 e4 e 6 and φ > = 1 e1 e 3, 13 < ψ φ > = 0. and for the omplete set η l > we onsider e3 η 1 > = 0 0 and η > = e5, 14 we find and so η 1 >< η 1 + η >< η = 1 0 = , 15 < ψ η l >< η l φ > = l Now, by diret alulations and using the otonioni algebra, we have < ψ η l >< η l φ > = e Nevertheless by requiring a omplex projetion for our salar produts l < > 1 e 1 e 1 < >, 18 eq. 16 is obviously not hanged, whereas eq. 17 vanishes. So, by imposing omplex geometry, we satisfy the ompleteness relation. S. De Leo and K. Abdel-Khalek - pag. 4
A seond objetion in writing an otonioni quantum mehanis is the violation of the norm onservation [14, pag. 51]. t < ψt φt > = t < ψt φt > + < ψt t φt > = < ψt H t φt > + < ψt Ht φt > = < ψt Ht φt > + < ψt Ht φt >. 19 where H represents the anti-self-adjoint Hamiltonian. Again, working in a two-dimensional Hilbert spae, let ψ0 > and φ0 > be orthonormal states ψ0 > = 1 e4 e 6, φ0 > = 1 e1 e 3, 0 < ψ0 φ0 > = 0, and onsider H = e3 0 0 e 5. 1 The time evolution operator will have the following form e e 3t 0 ost e3 sint 0 Ut,0 = 0 e e5t = 0 ost e 5 sint, then we find ψt > = Ut,0 ψ0 > = 1 e4 ost e 7 sint e 6 ost+e 3 sint φt > = Ut,0 φ0 > = 1 e1 ost+e sint e 3 ost e 6 sint,, 3 leading to It is lear that by imposing omplex salar produts, we have < ψt φt > = e 6 sintost+e 5 sin t 0. 4 < ψt φt > = < ψ0 φ0 > = 0, 5 whih implies the norm onservation. Everything is orret as it should be as required by the Rembieliński s isomorphism salar produt projets the OHS into the physial CHS. We observe that the dimensionality of a omplete set of states for omplex inner produt < ψ φ > is four times that for the otonioni inner produt < ψ φ >. Speifially if η l > are a omplete set of intermediate states for the otonioni inner produt, so that < ψ φ > = l < ψ η l >< η l φ >, η l >, η l e >, η l e 4 >, η l e 6 > form a omplete set of states for the omplex inner produt, φ > = l η l >< η l φ > + η l e >< η l e φ > + = m + η l e 4 >< η l e 4 φ > + η l e 6 >< η l e 6 φ > χ m >< χ m φ >, S. De Leo and K. Abdel-Khalek - pag. 5
where χ m represent omplex orthogonal states. Thus the ompleteness relation an be written as 1 = χ m > << χ m, m 1 = χ m >> < χ m m for further details on the ompleteness relation, one an onsult an interesting work of Horwitz and Biedenharn [7, pag. 455]. So in our formalism we generalize the Dira s notation by the definitions << χ m φ > = < χ m φ >, < φ χ m >> = < φ χ m >. V. CONCLUSIONS This paper aimed to give a lear exposition of the potentiality of barred otonions in quantum mehanis. We know that quantum mehanis is the basi tool for different physial appliations. Many physiists believe that imaginary numbers are related to the deep seret of quantization. Penrose [15] thinks that the quantization is ompletely based on omplex numbers. Trying to overome the problem of quantum gravity, he proposed to omplexify the Minkowskian spae-time. This represents the main assumption behind the twistor program. Adler [14] believes that quantization proesses should not be limited to omplex numbers but should be extended to another member of the division algebras rank, the quaternioni field. He postulates that a suessful unifiation of the fundamental fores will require a generalization beyond omplex quantum mehanis. Adler envisages a two-level orrespondene priniple: lassial physis and fields, distane sale omplex quantum mehanis and fields, quaternioni quantum field dynamis preoni level [16], with quaternioni quantum dynamis interfaing with omplex quantum theory, and then with omplex quantum theory interfaing in the familiar manner with lassial physis [14, pag. 498]. Following this approah, we are tempted to postulate that otonioni quantum field theory may play an essential role in an even deeper fundamental level of physial struture. Quaternioni quantum mehanis, using omplex geometry [11,1] or quaternioni geometry [14,16,17], seems to be onsistent from the mathematial point of view. Due to the otonions nonassoiativity property, otonioni quantum mehanis seems to be a puzzle. In this paper we have presented an alternative way to look at the otonioni world. The first motivation, in using otonions numbers in physis, an be onisely resumed as follows: We hope to get a better understanding of standard theories if we have more than one onrete realization. In this way we an reognize the fundamental postulates whih hold for any generi numerial field. We emphasize that a harateristi of our formalism is the absolute need of a omplex salar produt, whereas in quaternioni quantum mehanis the use of a omplex geometry is not obligatory and thus a question of hoie [14]. Using omplex geometry we overame the hermitiity problem and gave the appropriate and unique definition of momentum operator. We also realized Rembieliński isomorphism and were able to write down a orret ompleteness relation and norm onservation. Obviously to hek the onsistene of our otonioni formulation of quantum mehanis we need an expliit appliation. So in a forthoming paper we will develop a relativisti wave equation on the otonioni field [13]. We hope that the work presented in this paper, demonstrates that otonioni quantum mehanis may onstitute a oherent and well-defined branh of theoretial physis. We are onvined that otonioni quantum mehanis represents largely unharted and potentially very interesting, terrain in theoretial physis. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS The authors would like to thank P.
