(2012) Sediment hosted copper mineralization as the starting material for higher grade copper deposits Dr. Jon Thorson received a PhD in Geology from University of California, Santa Barbara, and joined Exxon Minerals Company in After 15 years exploring mineral deposits in the western United States, he retrained in petroleum exploration. That dual cross-trained experience provided a unique background for understanding the role sequence stratigraphy, basin analysis and fluid maturation in mineral systems in sedimentary terrains. Dr. Thorson has operated a geological consulting practice out of Denver, Colorado USA since 1990 and specializes in evaluation of mineral deposits in sedimentary basins, and the application of petroleum technology and concepts to minerals exploration. Among his specialties are sediment-hosted copper, sandstone-hosted uranium, and Carlin-type gold deposits. Master, S, Hendjala, F. and Kasirye, S. (2012) Isotope chemostratigraphy and sedimentology of the Neoproterozoic Kalahari Copperbelt (Botswana and Namibia): implications for the ages of sedimentation and mineralization Dr Sharad Master is a researcher and lecturer based at the Economic Geology Research Institute in the School of Geosciences, University of the Witwatersrand and was awarded a Harvard-South Africa Fellowship. He has extensive teaching experience, having lectured undergraduate and postgraduate courses in stratigraphic principles, South African geology, African geology and tectonics, surface processes, and mineral resources. He has also given short courses on Stratabound Sediment-hosted Copper Deposits in Johannesburg, Windhoek, Lusaka, Kitwe, Chingola, Perth, and at Rhodes University, Grahamstown (annually since 1992). Prior to his academic career, which started in 1995, he spent 15 years in the copper mining industry in Zimbabwe, where he worked as a mine geologist, exploration geologist, and researcher; he has also been a consultant with the Environment and Remote Sensing Institute, Harare, Zimbabwe. He has consulted widely to industry in the fields of African regional geology and metallogeny, stratabound copper deposits, and natural hazard assessment in Africa. 3

4 Dr Master has worked extensively on stratabound sediment-hosted copper deposits in Zimbabwe and in the Central African Copperbelt (Zambia and Congo). He has published extensively on a wide range of research interests, which include the regional geology and metallogeny of Africa, meteorite impact structures, chemostratigraphy of Proterozoic carbonate rocks, Neoproterozoic glaciations, palaeoseismites, palaeotsunamites, aeolianites, ichnofossils, sedimentary structures, and the History of Science (17th to 19th Century). He has been on the editorial board of several earth science journals, and has been a reviewer for a number of international journals and several scientific research proposals.
