3 INSTITUTION OF ENGINEERS () AGENDA 1. Outline of the Project and landslides By Mr. Kuwano 2. Results of geological investigation/analysis in Chitrakoot By Mr. Iwasaki 3. Countermeasure for the landslide in Chitrakoot By Mr. Hara SYNOPSIS OF THE PRESENTATION 1. Outline of the Project and landslides Mauritius is vulnerable to climate change, particularly landslide issues are becoming more serious due to recent natural disasters resulting from environmental changes and the increase of structures because of tourism and land development on steep slopes. The country wishes to draw plans, understand risks and implement measures on scientific and technical grounds in consideration of environmental burden and safety management. Against such background, JICA has decided to carry out the Project on Landslide Management as Technical Cooperation. The Project was launched on May 2012 and lasts until January 2015, and the desired outcomes are that the risk of landslides and other slope disasters is reduced, and the safety for the residents in the landslide area is secured. In the presentation, outline of the Project, the components and the activities as well as the definition of a landslide and slope disasters are introduced. 2. Results of geological investigation/analysis in Chitrakoot Three (3) high priority landslide hazard areas, Chitrakoot, Quatre Soeurs and Vallee Pitot, were selected along with the results of the basic survey and the landslide management plan in this project. In Chitrakoot area, the geologic investigation was carried out for the purpose of recognizing mechanism and the activity of the landslide; topographic survey/ aerial photographical interpretation/ site reconnaissance/ drilling survey/ geophysical exploration/ landslide monitoring. Based on the result, the stability analysis of the landslide is carried out and is used for a countermeasure.

4 INSTITUTION OF ENGINEERS () 3. Countermeasure for the landslide in Chitrakoot The landslide countermeasure work for in Chitrakoot area was examined based on the result of investigation, monitoring and analysis. Type and arrangement of countermeasure works was decided to achieve the planned Factor of Safety. According to the policy of the countermeasure in Chitrakoot, control work will be applied initially in order to reduce the sliding force of the landslide. Based on the examination, channel for flood, surface drainages and horizontal drainage were selected as control works for the target landslides in the area. Perspective of Designing of those countermeasure works will be introduced in the presentation.
