Soilgroupsarebaseduponasoil staxonomicclassificationusingsoilpropertiesliketexture(percentage ofsand,silt,andclay)andorganicmattercontent.soilgroupsareusedtointerpretphosphorusand potassiumsoiltestlevels.therearethreesoilgroupsinwisconsin:sandy(coarsemtexturedsoils),loamy (mediummandfinemtexturedsoils),andorganic(peats,mucks,etc.). Whatisthesoilyieldpotentialrating? Thesoilyieldpotentialisarelativerankingofasoil sabilitytoproducehighcornyieldsalongwiththe responsivenessofcornyieldtonitrogenapplications.forloamysoils,therearetworatings:highand Medium.Ingeneral,highyieldpotentialsoilsrequiremorenitrogenandhaveagreateryieldincrease fromappliednitrogenthanmediumyieldpotentialsoils. Whatarethemanagementimplicationsoftheyieldpotentialrating? Highyieldpotentialsoilshaverecommendednitrogenapplicationratesthatare,dependingontheprior crop,asmuchas50poundsperacregreaterthanmediumyieldpotentialsoils. Howissoilyieldpotentialdetermined? In2012,werevisedUWEXPub.A2809:Nutrientapplicationguidelinesforfield,vegetableandfruit cropsinwisconsin.onemajorchangewasrevisingthewaysoilyieldpotentialisdetermined.previously soilyieldpotentialrankingswereassignedtoasoilseriesbasedonaqualitativeassessmentbyan expert.inajointeffortwithnrcsstaff,wedevelopedaclassificationsystemthatusedpropertiesinthe NRCSdatabasetoidentifysoilmapunitswithcharacteristicsthatwilllimitcornyieldpotential.The systemallowsforuniform,nonmsubjectiveratingofsoilmapunitsthroughaseriesofqueriestothe database.soilpropertiesthatareusedtodeterminesoilyieldpotentialinclude:soildrainageclass, availablewaterintheupper60inchesofsoil,anddepthtobedrock.followingtheoctober2014soil Surveyupdates,wereranthequeriessothatnewsoilmapunitsareratedandalsotoensurethatour ratingsarebasedonthemostcurrentsoilsurveyinformation. WhyisthereaconcernabouttheKewaunee,Manawa,andHochheimsoilmapunits? Asaresultofafocusedstudyonthesesoils,NRCSmappershaveidentifiedadensicsoillayeratdepths thatrangefrom10to40inches.adensiclayerisdefinedashavingahighbulkdensityandlowabilityfor rootstopenetrate.thedesignationofadensiclayerhadtheresultofcausingourquerytoreturna yieldlimitation(lowavailablewater)forthesesoilmapunits,whenformerlytheyhadnoidentified limitationandwereconsideredhighsoilyieldpotential. Ourconcernisthatourcriteriausedtodeterminesoilyieldpotentialweredevelopedpriortothe designationofdensicsoillayersineasternwisconsin.thus,newqueriesofthedatabasemaynotbe returninganappropriateinterpretationofsoilyieldpotentialinsoilswithadensiclayer.anecdotal informationindicatesthattheyarenotgenerallylimitedbywateravailability.additionally,thereare fourkewauneeandtwohochheimsitesintheuw scornnitrogenresponsedatabasewherecorn followssoybeanonhighyieldpotentialsoils(56totalsites).inspectionofcornyieldresponseonthese sixsitesdoesnotsuggestanysubstantialdifferencesinyieldresponsecomparedtootherhighyield potentialsoils. Thisissueneedsfurtherinvestigation.Itwilllikelynotberesolveduntilafterthe2016growingseason. Whiletheinvestigationisongoing,weproposethatthesoilmapunits,wheresoilyieldpotential interpretationchangedbecauseofthedensicdesignation,willhavetheavailablewaterintheupper60 inchesresetbacktothevalueinusefrom2012untilnov
3 Atthistime,wefeelthefollowingitemsneedtobecompletedtoresolvetheissue: 1.* Digsoilpitsinseveralmapsunitsandidentifydepthofrootingandrootproliferationindensic layers. 2.* Investigateavailablewaterinthedensiclayer. 3.* Investigatethepotentialforperchedwatertablesabovethedensiclayertosupplywatertothe crop. 4.* Conductreplicatedcornnitrogenresponsetrialsonafewofthesoilmapunitsinquestion,if collaboratorscanbeidentified.studiesshouldtargetfieldsthatwerecornintheprevious growingseason. HowdoesthisaffecttherecommendationsthattheDATCPcertifiedsoiltestlabsprovide? TheUWSoil&ForageAnalysisLabprovidestheDATCPcertifiedprivatelabswithacomputerprogram tocreatenutrientrecommendationsconsistentwiththosefoundinuwexpuba2809.thesoils databasechangeswereimplementedatthedatcpcertifiedsoiltestlabsinlatesummer.becauseofthe consolidationoftestingservicesatuw slabinmarshfieldandstaffingchangesassociatedwiththe consolidation,theuwsoil&forageanalysislabisunabletomakechangestothesoilsdatabaseatthis time.wedonotfeelthatthiswillcausetoomuchofaproblem,becauseclientsmustsubmitsoilmap unitinformationtogetrecommendationsbymapunit.amajorityofclientssubmittingsoilsamplesto theuwsoil&forageanalysislabprovideonlythesoilseriesnameanddonotprovideinformation aboutthesoilmapunit.theuwsoil&forageanalysislabwillprovidedatcpcertifiedlabswithan updatednutrientrecommendationcomputerprogramwhenanupdatedprogramisavailable. 3
