3 Guidelines for Annual Report Please use the following headlines to report the present status and scientific achievements of your project (write N/A where not applicable) and explain abbreviations you use in your report. 1. Website address(es) related to the project 2. Summary of major past achievements of the project Publication record in ISI journals increased since the second project year (see publication listing), when the community started to work together interdisciplinary in the different working groups established by the IGCP 596 team. Public outreach achieved a major step forward with publication of a multilingual book and a video trailer posted via you tube. The community of Devonian workers related to IGCP 596 increased steadily each year. New international projects have been established (e.g., DAGGER Appalachian State University). 3. Achievements of the project this year only 3.1. General scientific achievements (Meetings are not considered as scientific achievements, they should be listed under heading 3.3.) One large interdisciplinary project, the DAGGER project (housed at the Appalachian State University, USA: started to receive attention: PI Carmichael, S.K. was awarded an NSF grant. One short report of IGCP 596 activities in 2015 is published in the 4 th issue of Episodes in A topical issue reporting on some results of IGCP 596 is published in GSL, Special Publications, Volume 423. 5 Full bibliography of this year (listed by author in alphabetical order with the most recent work listed first) has to be submitted as an annex. Distinguish between peer review literature and other (no abstracts). a) could not have been published were if not for this project b) related to this project see ANNEX Activities involving other IGCP projects, UNESCO, IUGS or others IGCP 591 jointly organized their closing meeting together with several stratigraphic subcommissions and IGCP 596. Field work and publication activity continues to be interdisciplinary involving colleagues from IGCP 580 and Scientific Legacy: Is there a need for storage of publications, field data, and other results of the project? Do you have a clear vision concerning where the data would be stored and who will be the custodian? Biodiversity datasets of Mid-Palaeozoic flora and fauna will be stored in online databases (preferred: Paleobiology Database) in order to be accessible to public after publication of results. Publications related to IGCP 596 are stored on the server of the Senckenberg Institute (custodian: Königshof, P.). As far as possible members of IGCP 596 try to publish in open access ISI journals, but larger datasets related to localities in field and geochemical data will be stored via the DAGGER (custodian: Carmichael and colleagues, Appalachian State Univ., USA) which shall become a central platform for scientific data exchange for all those involved in related research in future What tangible improvements has your project obtained? (Besides publications, we are interested to hear about improvements to research, scientific contacts, policy implications, etc) - More and more publications in highly recognized ISI journals appear. - A clear research focus on the CAOB (Central Asian Orogenic Belt) has been established with collaboration partners from Asia. After joint fieldwork and training workshops in China, Mongolia, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam, from these countries are invited via exchange programmes to compare their results from joint fieldwork to classical areas in central Europe (where local continue to finetune results from areas with more than 150 years of research history: e.g., formalizing sedimentary units according to ICS rules like Pre-Variscan Sequence of the Carnic Alps in order to provide stable standards for international correlation with localities that are un/under-explored until now). Particularly in Southeast Asia and Iran new satellite projects have been developed in the frame of this project, regions which are underrepresented in respect to our scientific topics but which are important because they are key areas in various aspects, such as palaeobiodiversity and plate tectonics. - A summary on active projects and collaborations is provided in the latest abstract book (Closing Meeting of IGCP 596 OET, Udine) What kinds of activities in respect to the benefit of society and science outreach has your project undertaken? We published a multilingual, well-illustrated book with 86 short summaries of most of localities where members of IGCP 596 are involved. This book was prepared for students and non- and shall raise their interest in Earth Science and Palaeontology. A documentary, scheduled for 2016, will be finalized in 2017 and shall provide insights for a broad audience into scientific work and production of knowledge Annual IGCP report 5
6 from field until publication documenting the understanding of climate change and its severity for different organism groups in interviews with students and What kind of public information (media reports, etc) has your project generated? And how do you evaluate their impact? During several conferences organizers achieved to give short interviews either for TV or for print media. For scientific audience we published several project reports in Episodes. Waters, J. A. (Appalachian State University, USA) was interviewed for a radio show about IGCP 596 broadcast (2/27/2016 by WFDD in North Carolina), weblink: Additionally, Waters, J. A. (website: news.appstate.edu/2015/12/11/planet-earth-in-deep-time/) and Valenzuelo-Rios, J. I. (University of Valencia, Spain; website: have received recognition by their universities with special web-appearance related to their research and involvement in IGCP 596. Such outreach is very important for the community, because internet appearance of university teachers and supervisors attracts their students and raises interest to the subject. 4. Activities planned 4.1. General goals Short communications on most important results of IGCP 596 related to climate change and its influence on marine and terrestrial fauna and flora are in preparation for highly recognized ISI journals. Additionally, a documentary about the activities of IGCP 596 during the past years shall be completed until summer Tentative list of specific meetings and field trips (please list the participating countries) - 4 th International Conodont Symposium, Valencia, Spain, (organization: Spain, Italy, Czech Republic, Austria). 5. Project funding requested 2016: IGCP 596 OET no further funding requested for this project 6. Request for extension, on-extended-term-status, or intention to propose successor project Successor project is submitted by da Silva, A.C. and others. Title of the project: Reading geologic time in Paleozoic sedimentary rocks: the need for an integrated stratigraphy. 7. Financial statement ($ USD only) The IGCP Scientific Board would like to be informed how the IGCP funds were used. 2016: IGCP 596 OET no UNESCO funding in What additional funding besides the IGCP seed funding has your project obtained thanks to the IGCP label? Please estimate the budget received for meetings, research or other and identify the source. ACTIVE PROJECTS (past projects are listed in previous annual reports and are estimated with grants of about 350, EUR if not more): Annual IGCP report 6
