3 Guidelines for Annual Report Form V Please use the following headlines to report the present status and scientific achievements of your project (write N/A where not applicable) and explain abbreviations you use in your report. 1. Website address(es) related to the project 2. Summary of major past achievements of the project The establishment of single working groups strengthened the entire project-related community since the beginning of the project. Communication among different working groups and the coorganization of workshops and conferences is better coordinated and becomes more successful with each project year that passed. Additionally, we achieved to interact with other IGCP projects which resulted in joint meetings, fieldwork and an increasing number of high-ranking publications. Most strong is the connection with colleagues from IGCP 580. Other projects involved are: IGCP 591, IGCP 575. The strong connection with SDS and SCS (Internat. Strat. Subcomm.) is documented by further joint meetings and continues as usual. Third party funding continues (e.g., FWF, DFG, DAAD). Several project applications are submitted recently (e.g. Lithuania) and awaiting approval. A close cooperation with YES (e.g. short courses in developing countries) is one of the most important aspects and will continue beyond the project duration. Furthermore, outreach activities increased. 3. Achievements of the project this year only One of the major achievements in 2013 is the increasing publication record. A first Proceedings volume is published in the Bulletin of Geosciences and two other Special are on the way to be published in 2014 (Geological Society, London, and a second one will be published in Palaeobiodiversity and Palaeoenvironments, Springer) Furthermore, the cooperation with East Asian countries (e.g. Malaysia, Vietnam, Myanmar, Thailand) received another strong impulse based on the meeting held in Malaysia and Vietnam. Apart from that, we progressed in the matter of sustainability and preservation of taxonomic knowledge. Therefore we had two small workshops run by the Paleobiology Database core group around Wolfgang Kiessling in Erlangen. Because entering data is complex and time consuming, another workshop for recruitment of data enterer is scheduled for Around US$ were obtained from different recources in the frame of this project this year. During the meeting held in Asia a professional camera team was invited for the preparation of a short project-trailer which will be provided via youtube and other public e-media. The trailer is part of a film-project which will be ready in The film will be than offered to broadcasting companies. Announcements related to all activities are provided on the monthly updated project homepage. Additionally, we achieved to get the IGCP 596 Book Project, a unique multilingual pilot project, where Devonian and Carboniferous localities and fossils are introduced from all over the world for a broad public audience, close to submission. 85 contributions from 33 countries are edited and will be submitted proof-ready to Springer either by end of this year or early in This book also includes 26 palaeobiological reconstructions (prepared by a professional painter) which shall raise the interest of students and non-scientists in the life of long time passed periods List of countries involved in the project (please *indicate the countries active this year and make the distinction between: Australia*, Austria*, Belarus*, Belgium*, Bosnia and Herzegovina*, Bulgaria*, Canada*, China*, Czech Republic*, Estonia, France*, Germany*, India*, Iran*, Italy*, Japan*, Latvia*,Libya*, Lithuania*, Malaysia*, Mongolia*, Morocco*, Myanmar*, Poland*, Portugal,

4 Russia*, Slovenia*, Spain*, Senegal*, Thailand*, Turkey*, United Kingdom*, Ukraine*, U.S.A.*, Vietnam* General scientific achievements and social benefits (Meetings are not considered as scientific achievements, they should be listed under heading 3.3.) Publication activity increased (e.g., Special Volumes, peer-reviewed papers), especially based on field work carried out in east Asia during the past 3 years. Furthermore, the number of specimen which have been incorporated in Paleobiology Database increased fundamentally. Social contact between scientists from east and west remarkably strengthens the community (know-how transfer, and uninvestigated areas). We also organized training courses such as a short course for Vietnamese students in the frame of the Asia meeting. 15 undergraduate students benefit from this 1-day workshop List of meetings with approximate attendance and number of countries 25. March 1.April 2013: Workshop Morocco, International Field Symposium The Devonian and Lower Carboniferous of northern Gondwana (joint meeting IGCP 596, SDS, SCS approx. attendance: 134; number of countries: 14 (attendance of field trip 53!) June: Field excursion in the Rheinisches Schiefergebirge (European Variscides). Introduction to parts of the European Variscides and preparing the final Conference to be held in 2015 (Germany). Participants: 4 Co-leader of the project (number of countries: 4) (see attachment) 21. July - 22.August 2013: Western Mongolia, Field-Workshop in the Lower and Middle Devonian of Mongolia; approx. attendance: 9; number of countries: August - 1.September 2013: Joint IGCP 580/596 Meeting, Calgary, Canada: Geophysical and Geochemical Techniques: A Window on the Palaeozoic World; approx. attendance: 20; number of countries: October 2013: Joint ICPSEA3/IGCP 596 Conference, Malaysia. approx. attendance: 58; number of countries: September 2013: Organization of a field trip in Montagne Noire (France) approx. attendance: 4; number of countries: October 2013: Córdoba, Spain, XXIX Jornadas de la Sociedad Española de Paleontología approx. attendance: 97; number of countries: Educational, training or capacity building activities Capacity building activities in 2013 focused mainly the establishment of a well-organized group entering taxonomic data into the Paleobiology Database. By now we achieved to grow a group of 5 specialists (stromatoporoids, corals, bryozoans, brachiopods, conodonts). Further steps are scheduled for 2014, where the team from Erlangen will convene a workshop providing hands-on tutorials for isotope geochemistry, carbonate microfacies and the Paleobiology Database. A second strong focus was to strengthen the cooperation with colleagues from Malaysia, Mongolia and Vietnam. A workshop for 15 students from the University of Hanoi was organized in the frame of the Malaysia/Vietnam meeting Participation of scientists from developing countries, and in particular young and women

5 scientists The amount of women scientists and students is increasing steadily. We are keen on a balanced participation by encouraging young and woman scientists for involvement and overtaking responsibility as coordinator of working groups (e.g. new coordinator for paleobotany macro remains). Particularly young women from Vietnam participated on the student workshop. As a result of this workshop an student exchange of at least two young women is planned in a bilateral cooperation project (proposal will be submitted in January 2014) List of most important publications (including maps) Distinguish between peer review literature and other (no abstracts) Bibliography (listed by author in alphabetical order with the most recent work listed first) Based on the limited pages we provide a list of most important papers as attachment (see IGCP 596-peer reviewed publications-2013); please guarantee that the reviewer will also receive this attachment!) Activities involving other IGCP projects, UNESCO, IUGS or others A number of activities are connected with the IGCP project as satellite-projects which resulted in the active participation in IGCP 596. Some of the satellite projects received also funding from third parties (see below). Clack, J.A. (UK) TW:eed project Tetrapod World: early evolution and diversification. September 3.October 2014: Mendoza (Argentine) Special Session at the IPC, International Palaeontological Congress April 2014: Carnic Alps Workshop (Udine, Italy) Additionally, field workshops in Asia (Thailand, Vietnam) are planned and it is also planned to establish a micropalaeontological- and thin section laboratory in Malaysia (at UTP in Ipho), which will be most probably sponsored by the oil company (Petronas). 5. Project funding requested Due to planned conferences and workshops in Erlangen, Mongolia and Mendoza a funding of ,- USD is considered necessary for 2014 because a good number of young colleagues from developing countries will be invited. 6. Request for extension, on-extended-term-status, or intention to propose successor project 7. Financial statement ($ USD only) The IGCP Scientific Board would like to be informed how the IGCP funds were used and if additional funding was obtained from different sources. The financial support given by the UNESCO ($7.500) was totally used as accommodation and travel grants for colleagues from developing countries (four women) and PhD students (Germany and Spain) that attended IGCP 596 meetings and workshops. A limited ammount was used for local travel expences and organizing expences (for details on funding please see Form III). Additional funding was provided by the University of Hanoi to support students and PETRONAS (Malaysia) to support the conference held in Ipoh. 9. What additional funding besides the IGCP seed funding has your project obtained thanks to the IGCP label? Please estimate the budget received for meetings, research or other and identify the source. Additional funding of about $ was acquired in the frame of this project in 2013 from different national funding sources for conference attendance of students, workshops, field trips and museum repository visits for taxonomic study: FWF B17: financial support for conference participation (IGCP 580 & 596 Joint meeting in Canada): ca. $ Waters, J.A. (USA): DEB Collaborative Research: Assembling the Echinoderm Tree of Life. $ Other funding EAGER - Exploratory Fieldwork in the Late Devonian of western Mongolia in the Summer of NSF. $ Funding continued until April 30, Initiation of international cooperation and support to organize a student-workshop (IGCP 596 in Vietnam) DFG: KO-1622/14-1: $ Prefinancing of the IGCP 596 film-project, Senckenberg Society: $ What tangible improvements has your project obtained? (Besides publications, we are interested to hear about improvements to research, scientific contacts, policy implications, etc.) The cooperation of working groups improves within each year. We recognize this especially in the publication record and during the compilation of the annual report. This year many more colleagues acknowledged IGCP 596 in topic related publications. Additionally, the group size

7 increased. New members are very active and basically very interested in joining upcoming meetings. Policy implications are negligible in industrialized countries but are important in developing countries due to the relevance of UNESCO. 11. What kinds of outreach and training has your project undertaken? Please describe how this project specifically benefited women scientists, young scientists and/or scientists from developing countries. We took care to give support for conference attendance especially to students and women scientists from developing countries. A special focus was to support colleagues from Mongolia in 2013, in order to foster the cooperation and collaboration in future. The tetrapod working group established a website and blog as well as facebook account (See attachment: Report by Clack) Undergraduate and Post-Graduate Training: 1-day field workshop in Vietnam with 15 students. Conodont laboratory and fieldwork basic techniques. General Devonian Biostratigraphy and Chronostratigraphy. April 2013; University of Valencia. Organiser: José Ignacio Valenzuela- Ríos. Student: Ph. D. student Lu Jianfeng, Nanjing Institute of Geology and Palaeontology; Chinese Academy of Sciences (See attachment: Report by Valenzuela-Ríos). Outreach activities focused on the final layout of the planned book project (see attachment of the cover) and the film-project on IGCP What kind of public information (media reports, etc.) has your project generated? And how do you evaluate their impact? Two of the major issues related to public outreach progressed in The first one, a book for public, is nearly ready being submitted to the printing company either by end of 2013 or early in Second, a movie-trailer, will introduce IGCP 596 and inform on the student-workshop and conference in Vietnam. The trailer will be available early in Basically this short movie shall inform a broad non-scientific audience about biodiversity patterns and its relation to climate change in the Mid-Paleozoic. Additionally some minor outreach like guide and information booklets are published (e.g. Carnic Alps booklet). Because of limited space latter outreach is included in the single reports (see attachment). The books will have an important impact for IGCP projects and geology/palaeontology in general because of the wide distribution, the interesting content with beautiful pictures and landscapes. Regarding the movie-trailer we have no experience but we are convinced that particularly young scientists will distribute the trailer and therefore we think that this might have also an positive impact. 13. Attach any information you may consider relevant Comment: The recent annual report requires more information (which is positive) but the report-length is still limited to 5 pages which make no sense. We would suggest to change the length of the report in 2014 to 10 pages. Important: please forward also the attached documents to the reviewer in order to guarantee a complete documentation of project activities in Important list of attachments: Attachment 1 (list of publications): important and necessary for reviewers Attachment 2 (Report by Valenzuela Rios), an example for regional project reports, for other reports please visit IGCP 596 homepage Annual Reports Attachment 3 (Cover of the book project) Attachment 4, 5 Conference programmes of the Morocco Meeting and Malaysia Meeting.
