Introduction Being the third year the University College Cork (UCC) student chapter has been established, the main focuses by this year s committee was to bring in Industry members to speak to the students on current affairs in the geological industry. We wanted our members to gain a better understanding and more practical knowledge of Economic Geology and what they can expect after graduation. We invited guest speakers to give talks on their own personal experiences within the industry and the history of the companies they worked with. Committee Meetings were held on a weekly basis at first to get the chapter back on its feet. Then they were held biweekly but discussions were continuously carried out between via a Facebook group and . During meetings, we discussed the future of the chapter and the organising of events, workshops and field trips. We also concentrated on keeping the Facebook pages up to date. Local museum operator, Tadhg O'Sullivan, gave access to the copper mines, and also led a guided tour throughout. The field trip was attended by several UCC members, including Ms. Eileen McCarthy and Dr. Bettie Higgs, and icrag researchers Juergan Lang (PhD,) and Joshua Coppage (MSc.), as well as several undergraduate students. Members of the Cork Geological Association also attended. The field trip was entirely self-funded. Figure 1. Group listening to Dr. Pat Meere explain the tectonic history of the Allihies area. 4

Organisation of Guest speakers/talks 30 th November 2016 Professor Ken Higgs gave a talk and launched his new book the 'Geological evolution of the Dingle Peninsula, 40 years on' on Wednesday 30 th November 2016, in the Ted Neville Lab at 8pm. This was the annual Ted Neville lecture however the CGA and SEG helped promote the event. It was attended by over 40 people (SEG and CGA members included). 7 th December 2016 We had Dr. Pedro Cordeiro speaking on Wednesday 7 th December 2016, on the 'Sedimentary hosted Copper Deposits of Kamoa in the Northern Luffilian Arc, Congo'. It will be held at 6pm in the Ted Nevill Lab. It was attended by 15 geologists (all SEG members) Figure 4. Attendance at Dr. Pedro Cordeiro s talk. 6
22 nd March 2017 Dr. Steve Hollis, a PostDoc from UCD (ICRAG), gave a talk in conjunction with our SEG chapter on 22 nd March The talk was titled Closing the Iapetus Ocean: Implications for VMS, SEDEX and mesothermal gold mineralisation in the north of Ireland. The talk was attended by UCC Geology department lecturers, SEG members and visiting lecturers (18 in total). 30 th March 2017 Prof. Garth Earls and Mr. David Furlong gave a talk on Thursday 30th March at 7pm in the Ted Neville. Garth is Director of Conroy Gold and Natural Resources, as well as Director of Central Asia Resources. The title of Garths talk was 50 shades of Greywacke- Orogenic Gold in Longford Down. David is general manager of Group Eleven Resources and spoke on A new zinc company focused on Ireland. Zinc prices are on the rise and Ireland is a major zinc producer so both Garths and Davids were good talks regarding prospects in Ireland. The talk was attended by 29 geologists (5 industry, 3 UCC Lecturing staff, and 21 student SEG members). Figure 5. UCC SEG Student Chapter Committee following the talks. From left to right: Caoimhe Farrell (Secretary), Carla Hickey (4 th year Rep), Sarah Bolt (President), Mr. David Furlong (General manager Group Eleven Resources), Prof. Garth Earls (Director of Conroy Gold), Juergen Lang (UCC PhD ICRAG), Luke O Reilly (Treasurer), Joshua Copage (Postgrad Rep) 7
6 th April 2017 Dr. Bob Foster gave a talk on Thursday 6th April. Bob is the former CEO of Stratex International and now a consulting geologist with Stratex as a client. He spoke on 'Gold exploration challenges, rewards, and fun from a small-company perspective'. Being the last day of college in UCC, attendance was poor as many students had already gone home. Bob s talk was exhilarating and really motivated the students in regards the gold exploration industry. 13 student SEG members attended this talk. Participation in Conferences/Short courses. MDSG Mineral Deposits Study Group (MDSG) December 19 th 21 st. Two members from the chapter s executive committee and two general members attended the MDSG in Bristol. This event was organised for M.Sc. and Ph.D. students to present research topics related to the exploration geosciences with an ultimate goal of acquiring funding. CGA (Cork Geological Association) Monthly talk The UCC SEG Student Chapter President (Sarah Bolt) and Juergen Lang (UCC PhD ICRAG and active SEG Committee Member) were asked by the CGA to give a combined talk on The Geological History of the Allihies Copper Mine and Surrounding Area. This was held on the 25 th January It consisted of a combination of myself (Sarah) and Juergens Thesis/PhD research and a general overview of the Allihies area. It was attended by just under 50 CGA members. We presented the lecture together, then brought the audience to the top of the room and handed out mineralised hand samples from Allihies as well as some volcanic samples from the area (which was what my research consisted of). We also showed some drone footage which Juergen took of the area. The lecture was well received and appreciated. IAEG Geophysics Training Weekend February 2017 The fourth year representative (Carla Hickey) and president of the SEG Cork student chapter (Sarah Bolt) attended the IAEG Applied Geophysics Course in Galway from the 24 th to the 26 th of February This workshop was to gain experience in Techniques and practices in 8
Mineral Exploration in Ireland. This was another opportunity for the committee to promote the chapter to past students and other professionals. Figure 6. President, Sarah Bolt and 4th year rep, Carla Hickey seen both wearing light blue jackets, listening to Mr. Graham Reid during the Geophysics weekend. Cork Science Fair November 2016 The fourth-year representative (Carla Hickey) and President (Sarah Bolt) attended the annual Cork Science Fair on the 20 th of November 2016, which was held in the Neptune Stadium in Cork city. The SEG collaborated with icrag to promote and teach young children and adults about minerals and resources in Ireland. Figure 7. Committee members Carla Hickey and Sarah Bolt and member Michael Whitelaw at the CSF teaching adults and children about mineralisation and core logging in Ireland. 9
Future Plans First Aid course None of our undergraduate students in UCC are trained in First Aid and as a core safety course, we believe it is important for all geologists to finish their degree with at least the basics covered. We (geologists) undertake numerous field trips throughout our undergraduate life, as well as a 6 week individual mapping thesis project in 4th year. We contacted the IGI and the IAEG to see if funding was available to subsidise such training but unfortunately not. We have spoken with head of the Geology Department in UCC and as staff and PhD s undertake a first aid course, be agreed it would be possible to combine undergraduates with the original training course. However funding from the SEG would be needed to help subsidise such a course for the undergraduates interested. Tara Mines Talk and Tour Vice president Daniel White has been in contact with Tara mines and they were happy to give a talk in UCC and possibly a tour at the start of the next academic year. Kupferschiefer We are currently in contact with the Zurich SEG chapter about a combined trip around the german Kupferschiefer for the Summer of Planning is underway. General Overall, we plan on bringing in more guest speakers to teach and encourage students toward the economic industry. We plan to bring in more fund-raising events for next year. All past and future plans have been laid out easily for the future committee. 10
