13 Studying in Edinburgh: how to study Learning through lectures, practicals, tutorials, fieldwork & personal study. 20 credits = 200 hours of your time (usu. 60 hours contact time). Learning at university is very different to what you have done at school Our job is to help you learn and develop new skills, not help you pass assessments/exams which someone else sets Personal study is just as important as scheduled classes; LEARN, directed resources, other online resources, text books, past papers, group work Be an active learner; don t just follow instructions, but make sure you understand why you are doing something Use practicals, tutorials and fieldtrips as an opportunity to ask questions, get feedback, explore ideas etc. Don t be afraid to ask questions during or after lectures Be prepared; turn up to all elements of each course and plan your time Use the extensive feedback we give at UoE!
14 Time management Essay writing Study skills Learning support Individual and group PT meetings Career talks GeolSoc
15 Be a rep at the Staff Student Liaison Committee 2 meetings per semester (weeks 3 and 7); feedback given to class in week 5 by Lecturer 2 reps (at least) per course for pre honours; we help you get feedback from your class Reps get EUSA training, University recognition (great for CV) and meeting with the Head of School Reps play a key role in the development of teaching within the School (great way to get yourself known by everyone) Please volunteer!!
16 Personal Tutoring and student support Role of PT is to support students in reviewing academic progress through a complete programme of study by: Welcoming you at the beginning of each academic year Providing guidance on course choices Providing advice on study difficulties, and overview of progress Reflect on long term development based on learning inside and outside of the formal curriculum It s up to you how engaged you are with this process, but your PT can provide invaluable help and guidance. Group PT meetings organised per degree program; if there is anything you think would be beneficial, contact your DPC Fill in doodle poll to arrange a PT meeting this week (very important as they need to confirm attendance)
