Get Started How might elevation features in an environment change where people decide to build? How can we represent an environment with different heights on a flat surface, such as a map projection?

Introduction Read the introduction. A collection of landforms in an area is its typography. A typographical map uses a series of lines to represent the three-dimensional shape of the land surface, using lines to represent specific elevations.

United States Geological Survey, Public Domain. Challenge What do the lines on a typographical map show?

Procedure Place 20 drops of food coloring in your container of water Place the lid on the box of the landform model, and look down at the landform. Use the marker to draw a dashed line on the lid outlining the edge of the landform. Careful not to smudge your line, remove the lid and fill the box with water up to the first step on the side of the box.

Procedure Place the lid on the box, and use the marker to outline where the water reaches the sides of the landforms. Label any lines drawn with a 1. Remove the lid, fill the box to the next step, and outline where the water reaches the sides of the landform again. Label any lines drawn with a 2. Repeat the previous step 3 more times, labeling the lines 3, 4, and 5.

Procedure Carefully, add just enough water to cover the top of the landform, and pay close attention to label the highest point with an X on the lid.

Follow Up A contour interval is the change between adjacent lines. If each line represents 25 meters, what is the estimated height of the top of the landform? Part of the South Franklin Mountains near El Paso

Follow Up Discuss with the people at your table: What does your topographical map show you about the land? What does your topographical map NOT show you about the land?

Next Activity In the previous activity, we drew a simple contour map of a landform. We can use such contour maps to determine the stability of an area by looking for areas with little change in typography over time. This is important in determining stable building sites.

United States Geological Survey, Public Domain. Challenge What can topographical maps tell you about the stability of a building site?

Procedure You will first work with a partner at your table, then you and your partner will work with the other pair of students sharing your table. Each student sheet shows a street map and a topographical map of Boomtown at different times.

Procedure In your science notebook, make a table as shown. Next, carefully examine and compare each location.

Procedure Observe changes in roads, buildings, waterways, and landforms. Discuss any changes you see with your partner, and record observations in your table. Discuss your ideas with the other pair in your group of four. Review your data tables together, and add any new observations of the three building sites.

Follow Up What major changes did you observe between 100 years ago and 20 years ago? And between 20 years ago and today? Look at the maps of the three locations in Boomtown. Which is the most stable? And the least? Explain the supporting evidence. Do the maps indicate any possible problems at any of the three locations?

Key Vocabulary Contour Interval Contour Line Key Landform Stability Topography Topographical Map

Key Vocabulary Topography is the collection of landforms within an area. Topographical Map uses a series of lines to represent the three-dimensional shape of the land surface. Contour Interval is the change in elevation between adjacent lines.

TEKS ADDRESSED Texas Essential Knowledge & Skills (TEKS) Science, Grade 8, Beginning with School Year (a)(4) (D) Earth and space. Students identify the role of natural events in altering Earth systems.... Students will illustrate how Earth features change over time by plate tectonics. They will interpret land and erosional features on topographic maps. (c)(9) Earth and space. The student knows that natural events can impact Earth systems. The student is expected to: (C) interpret topographic maps and satellite views to identify land and erosional features and predict how these features may be reshaped by weather.

NGSS ADDRESSED MS-ESS3-3. Apply scientific principles to design a method for monitoring and minimizing a human impact on the environment.
