1 Page 1 of 8 Quick Links WATER MANAGEMENT INTERNSHIP USDA HIS GRANT FUNDED FINAL PROJECT REPORT SUBMITTED BY MELISSA QUINTANA 11/07/07-03/24/08 Summary Provided is an assessment of my accomplishments for the HSI Internship attended in the winter of 2008 at the Water Resource Institute located at California State University of San Bernardino. The implementation of the Green Atlas Places project has created a resource for the public to learn about watershed management and allows for visualization of the Upper Santa Ana Watershed. The Santa Ana Watershed Project Authority s (SAWPA) Integrated Watershed Plan incorporates many recommendations for improving the long term sustainability of the watershed. This project has been designed with the recommendations in SAWPA s plan focusing on the goal of increased engagement of the stakeholders through education and recreation. Green assets and open space opportunities as well enhanced methods for getting out into the watershed using the regional trail system meets many goals of the integrated plan. The public can interact with the website and understand how to help in the efforts to sustain watershed management as the watershed continues to grow. With the introduction of the ArcGIS spatial software, its analytical methods and geographic datasets I have been able to apply geospatial technology to the project regarding the Upper Santa Ana Watershed. As a developer of computer programs I was able to extend these capabilities to the internet as a source of information to the public in regards to watershed management. The incompletion of the routing component is due to unforeseen time constraints that occurred during the server configuration process. The server in which the Green Places Atlas map resides was out of space and the data needed for the routing functionality would have been detrimental to the server had it consumed the last of the memory. The time needed to process the order and delivery of the parts needed to enhance the computer memory was necessary considering the server that was originally planned to be used for this project was determined to not meet the requirements for the routing capabilities. With the completion of the server configuration resulting in enough space to meet the requirements needed for the routing task, we are proposing to incorporate the completion of the routing component into the next round of the HIS project scope. Described below are the learning experiences, challenges, accomplishments and works in progress that evolved while utilizing the facilities, equipment and knowledge provided to me by the Water Resource Institute. Enabling watershed visualization using ArcMap and ArcCatalog ArcMap and ArcCatalog are application tool sets within ArcGIS. ArcMap is the central application used in ArcGIS, which is where I displayed and explored the datasets for my study area, where I assigned symbols, and where I created map layouts for printing and publication. In addition, I used ArcMap to create and edit datasets. ArcMap has enabled me to represent geographic information as a collection of layers and other elements in a map. ArcCatalog is the application that enabled me to integrate and unify all of the data files, databases, and ArcGIS documents available to me. With the opportunity to participate in the HSI Internship I have learned to effectively create, maintain and manage the Green Atlas Places map and the data needed to build it so that the public will have visualization and interactive access while participating in the education process of watershed management. 2 Page 2 of 8 ArcGIS Server has allowed me to share my GIS resources across the web. Of the GIS resources that I am capable of sharing with others with the use of ArcGIS Server are the maps, globes, address locators, geodatabases, and tools. Of these resources I have hosted the Green Atlas Places map allowing the client application Visual Studio to use and interact with it. This consisted of learning how to host the map. Currently, I am in the process of creating additional GIS resources to be hosted for the geocoding and network analysis functionality needed for the website that I have created for the Water Resource Institute. In addition, to provide the most efficient functionality, I have learned to cache the Green Atlas Places map using ArcGIS Server within ArcCatalog. I have learned that a cache is a collection of pre-rendered map tiles that can be used for display of a map service. As a result of implementing the caching functionality, my map displays quickly because the map image does not have to be rendered on the fly. The cost of rendering the image is paid only once when the cache is created. The biggest challenge was determining how many scale levels of the map should be cached so that the interaction speed of loading and zooming would yield optimal performance. Various numbers of scale levels were cached until the best performance of five scale levels were acknowledge to be the most efficient. ArcGIS Server combined with ArcCatalog has enabled me to host the Green Atlas Map via the Green Places Atlas website with fast and efficient performance as a public resource for the education purposes of Watershed Management. Enabling watershed visualization using Visual Studio 2005 and ArcGIS Server WebADF Visual Studio, combined with WebADF, has been the most challenging. Although, once an accomplishment is learned and implemented it is the most rewarding for the purpose of the Green Atlas Places project. Visual studio application creates the website along with all of the functionality using the WebADF tools provided and installed by ArcGIS Server. The results of the tools studied and learned up to this point to create the site that is currently available can be viewed by selecting the Green Atlas link at The next WebADF tool within Visual Studio to be implemented is currently under construction and will allow for the user to interactively apply geocoding and network analysis. Visual Studio, combined with the WebADF tools, has produced the end results which have helped me to completely understand how the functionalities have enabled the public to interact with the Upper Santa Ana Watershed positively and help in the efforts to sustain watershed management as the watershed continues to grow. The HSI Internship provided by the Water Resource Institute has provided an abundance of information allowing me to implement the Green Atlas Places project. The most challenging aspect has been to understand how all of the applications complement one another to perform superior functionality for private and public use. All functionalities and accomplishments are reached through extensive and sometime numerous trials. The success and completion of this project was due to the training resources, software, electronic devices and help provided by the Water Resource Institute. The intent of my efforts was to provide the regional WRI at CSUSB with a website of the Upper Santa Anna Watershed that is to be shared with the public and the Santa Ana Watershed stakeholders as an interactive source of knowledge and information. The website is a resource to the public which will help to the Water Resource Institute in their efforts in the process of educating the importance of understanding what the Santa Ana Watershed is, appreciate what it provides to the land and people, and how to enjoy the natural resources of the watershed.
