University of Washington, Seattle, WA. July 2001 Concentrations: Hydrologic Modeling, Surface Water Hydrology, Cold Season Processes Dissertation: Understanding the Hydrologic Effects of Frozen Soil Adviser: Dr. Dennis P. Lettenmaier M. S. in Aerospace Engineering. University of Colorado, Boulder, CO., 1994 Concentrations: Environmental Remote Sensing, Sea Surface Temperature Research: Comparisons of satellite derived sea surface temperatures with in-situ observations. Adviser: Dr. William Emery B. A. in Physics. Augustana College, Rock Island, IL., 1992 Concentrations: Physics, Math, Computer Programming RESEARCH INTERESTS To facilitate the integration of field based observations, remote sensing products and hydrology models to address questions and concerns related to environmental change and to further our understanding of land-atmosphere interactions and the hydrologic cycle. Recent 1 of 8
2 research includes studying the hydrologic significance of seasonal soil frost in North America, the development of wireless sensor networks for the observation of spatial variability in surface hydrology and the applicability of aircraft- and satellite-based thermal remote sensing to monitoring stream temperatures. RESEARCH SKILLS: Oversight of budget and research goals for a small group of post-doctoral and graduate researchers split between two departments Organization and maintenance of ground based data collection in support of thermal remote sensing project Program maintenance and development for a macroscale hydrologic model Developed and implemented a field data collection program in support of model algorithm development Developed data processing programs Conducted comparisons of satellite and in situ observations of sea surface temperature Designed and deployed instruments to make in-situ measurements of sea surface temperature from volunteer merchant vessels Designed and deployed seepage meters for use in small lakes and wetlands in Wisconsin. PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE: Assistant Professor, Present Department of Agricultural and Biological Engineering, Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN. Research Scientist, Managing three year study to determine the usefulness of thermal remote sensing products to the observation of regional stream temperatures. Project includes the deployment and maintenance of in-situ temperature loggers and the acquisition of plane and satellite thermal imaging products. Project under the direction of Dr. Stephen Burges and Dr. Alan Gillespie at the University of Washington, Seattle, WA. Lecturer, CEE 342 Fluid Mechanics, Winter Quarter 2002 Prepared lecture plans and taught the introductory fluid mechanics course in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Washington. Course required 5 hours of lecture a week, plus 5 days overseeing class lab experiments. The class was set-up as an experiment to give future Ph.D. students experience in teaching. Therefore, my teaching skills were monitored and discussed with Dr. Stephen Burges. 2 of 8
3 Graduate Research Assistant, Conducted field work and model development on frozen soil and other cold season processes under the direction of Dr. Dennis P. Lettenmaier at the University of Washington, Seattle, WA. Research Assistant, Deployed and monitored sea surface temperature instrument network aboard ships of opportunity under the direction of Dr. William Emery at the University of Colorado, Boulder, CO. Graduate Research Assistant, Conducted comparisons of satellite-derived and buoy-observed global sea surface temperatures. Designed, constructed and began deploying sea surface temperature measurement packages for ships of opportunity under the direction of Dr. William Emery at the University of Colorado, Boulder, CO. Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship in Oceanography, summer 1991 Collected side-scan sonar data and developed new procedures for processing under the direction of Dr. Robert Tyce at the University of Rhode Island, Narragansett, RI.
