23 2.2) The «pillars» of social geography Pillar 1.Geography is a social science that is reflexive 1. point : the construction of knowledge proceeds from an inner objectivation. We are doing geography from a point of view ; objectivation is an attempt to go beyond our own social and cultural position.

24 The academic work is not separated from one s position as a citizen; we can start doing research from our individual or collective experience of the world. A gymnastics of being involved and distant. The geography is not only an academic production ; it is a set of practices inscribed in social relationships («rapports sociaux»).

25 2 pillar. Space is a social construction. In social geography, space is viewed as a mirror of society and in return it has an impact on society The society evolves, thus the production of space itself evolves; space is becoming more complex (several degrees of construction, widening the scope of space/time interactions)

26 The media are mainly based on images (icones); to some extent, we are moving from a bidimensional relationships («space as a mirror») to a multidimensional («space as a screen» that is conveying narratives etc., both displaying and concealing the world)

28 One of the most important feature is the role of visual media which are both constructing new dimensions of space and new relationships to places even producing places The media are part of the economy through consumption and commodification of the world; therefore they are part of the social relationships (rapports sociaux) through the space: they are «material».

29 3.Pillar The geographer is sensitive to the inequalities -Because knowledge is part of the social relationships ; we have to make it more available to the people so that it is contributing to the public debate (raising social issues) -The praxis of geography may contributes to empower the most deprived people ; to get a better command of space is a condition of an active citizenship («spatial capital»)

30 We have to adapt our research tools and method so that it is able to give an accurate account of the society. Each language (writing, image making) provides a different account of the world Therefore in constructing our field of research we have to consider both the visual media as an object and as a method
