Theoretical Explanation of Markovnikov s Rule 3 δ + δ X 3 step 1 (slow r.d.s.) 2 o carbocation (more stable) or 3 1 o carbocation (more stable) One way to state Markovnikov s rule is to say that in the addition of X to an alkene, the hydrogen atom adds to the carbon atom of the double bond that already has the greater number of hydrogen atoms h. 8-16
