1 Lab: Precipitate Background This lab is designed to give students considerable practice in correctly writing and naming ionic compounds. By using small-scale chemistry, students will mix together various aqueous solutions of sodium with various solutions of nitrate and determine whether or not a chemical reaction has taken place. It will be known if a reaction has occurred by the presence or absence of a precipitate. A precipitate is a solid product of the reaction of two aqueous solutions. A precipitate can take on different appearances, but in general you will know a precipitate has formed when the solution goes from being clear to translucent (allowing some light to pass through) or opaque (allowing no light to pass through). The formation of the solid particle products (the substance(s) produced in a chemical reaction) from the aqueous reactants (the substances be reacted in a chemical reaction) is what causes the change in appearance. Many times the solid particles will reflect the light in different ways resulting in the possibility of a variety of colored precipitates being formed from various combinations of reactants. For this lab, sodium (Na + ) and nitrate (NO 3 - ) solutions have been chosen to narrow the possibilities of products because neither the sodium ion nor the nitrate ion will ever combine with any other ion to form a precipitate. Since these ions will not participate in the chemical reaction they are referred to as spectator ions. Any reaction that does occur must be a result of the other two ions participating in the reaction. Purpose To practice writing and naming ionic compounds. Materials Aqueous solutions A H Micro-well plate Precipitate Lab Grid Aqueous solutions micro-pipettes Overhead transparency Safety Many of the chemicals used in this lab are toxic. Silver nitrate (AgNO 3 ) in particular is highly toxic and will stain skin and clothing if allowed to come into contact with either. For all chemicals, alert teacher to any spills. If any substance should come into contact with your skin, wash immediately and alert your teacher. If any substances should contact your eyes, wash immediately for several minutes and alert your teacher. All substances should be disposed of in the sink, just be sure to rinse them down the drain with plenty of water. Wash your hands before you leave the lab. Procedure 1. Place a transparency over the solutions grid provided. 2. In the first row add 2-3 drops of solution A. 3. To the first square, and 2-3 drops of solution #1. 4. Write an ionic equation for the reactant ions. Example: 5. Determine if a reaction has taken place by observing a color change, solid forming, or both. If no reaction takes place, finish the chemical equation by writing No RXN ( no reaction ) Example: No RXN 6. If a reaction takes place, finish the chemical equation by writing the correct chemical formula for the product, naming it, and describing it in 1-2 words.
