The Year In Perspective Major Events and Activities: New services and yet another journal-use study highlighted fiscal year 1998 in the UIUC Chemistry Library. We implemented a terrific document delivery service, thanks to the IRRC head Lynn Wiley, and we continued to expand our electronic reserves program. The fourth journal-use study was conducted from January 1, 1998 to March 31, In August 1997 the Chemistry Library was instructed to cancel approximately $80,000 worth of serials. By fall, a Task Force on the Future of the Library was formed, and subsequently recommended the reinstatement of these cancelled serials. The Chemistry Library has received temporary funding to continue to purchase these titles until FY2000. This collection see-saw, and the discussion surrounding it, was a major event during FY98. Notable Acquisitions: This year a number of long-standing foreign chemistry journals ceased and merged into two new journal titles. This repackaging was the most notable change in chemistry literature in recent memory. Another notable "de-acquisition" was the ceasing of the long-running series "Gmelin Handbuch der Anorganischen Chemie." Funds formerly used to purchase this series will be spent instead on SciFinder Scholar, to provide enduser, flat-fee, online access to Chemical Abstracts. Last year the Chemistry Library began to access the Gmelin Handbook online, ensuring continued access to this important work. New Services Offered: As previously mentioned, new services in the UIUC Chemistry Library include document delivery from the British Lending Library (Inside Web), electronic reserves expanded and offered to every upperdivision course instructor in the School of Chemical Sciences, and library-funded access to SciFinder Scholar. In addition, the Chemistry Library has continued to keep abreast of emerging electronic journals in full-text, offering up-to-date links through our home page ( We have also worked to provide access to Chemical Abstracts through CD-ROM. This service/product was made available beginning spring 1998.

2 2. Outlook for Next Year and Beyond Forecast: There are uncertainties facing the Chemistry Library which will need to be resolved in the coming year(s). These include collection funding, space allocation, and, very broadly, access versus ownership. Marshaling our resources of time and energy and expending them judiciously will take thoughtful planning and management. Our expansion plans are proceeding, although painfully slowly. We continue to work on every aspect of the collection: space, shifting, weeding, preservation, acquisition, and budgeting. Circulation statistics in the Chemistry Library dropped this year, due, we believe, to the introduction of online reserves. Moving the core Biochemistry classes (350, 353, 355) to online tests and notes meant a dramatic reduction in the number of manual circulations taking place. This is a very positive change, and simply moves a very labor-intensive statistic (checking out reserve material) to a online "hit" statistic. With this type of positive migration taking place, the importance of measuring circulation shifts from manual circulation to online use of library resources. We predict in the future that circulation statistics will continue to drop, being replaced by online access statistics. New Products and Services: A number of new initiatives are "online" for the coming year. First, we plan to continue to support Chemical Abstracts on CD-ROM, and have already sought funding to increase coverage for the most recent years, 1997 and Second, commercial document delivery has passed the test with patrons, meaning that it now needs to be continued and expanded. Third, electronic journal subscriptions need to be expanded both in the Chemistry Library and library-wide, as this means of access is growing increasingly acceptable to, and expected by, patrons. Resources Required: This section is repeated from last year's report, which succinctly stated requirements for this library: "Many types of resources will be called upon during the coming year. Financial support is critical, but not the most critical. Time, energy, and personnel support are also important to achieving goals, or for even staying the course. The resource most required is the talent of good decision making based on facts and faculty input. We will be building a future for all chemical sciences research in both physical facilities and material collections. How this future is funded, shaped, and serviced will be decided in the corning few years. One of the most critical resources is the staff of the University Libraries. We need a full staffing review in order to use people to their full potential, to serve users to our best ability, and to reward our staff by better identifying the level of their jobs and setting their pay scale appropriately."

Technology and the Unit New Implementations: As stated earlier, the implementation of Chemical Abstracts on CD-ROM was accomplished in spring SciFinder Scholar was available for a trial term during summer 1998, and was purchased in July 1998 (single simultaneous user). We continued to expand the number of classes putting tests and notes on electronic reserves, and we found a terrific use for barcodes by using them for our 4th journal-use survey which took place from January to March Keeping up with electronic journals is now practically a full time job, as publishers offer limited free access to this growing body of literature. In addition, migration to OVID for all our SOl searches took place in December This task involved significant staff time to manually retype SOl searches from IBIS into OVID. Continuing Activities: User response to new technology continues to be a priority for the Chemistry Library staff. Our patrons are gradually becoming more familiar and comfortable with all the online options we offer. ORA will be a particularly eventful activity library-wide, as we move to a new online catalog. It will also be a continuing educational process to move patrons to online Chemical Abstracts (both CD-ROM and SciFinder Scholar), electronic journals, and online reserves. Planning and Priorities: Fiscal year 1998 will be another "migration" year as we offer more online services and educate users to move to this type of access to the chemical literature. A quarter-time GA position for user education has been established through the Wert Endowment, thanks to the generosity of Charlie Wert. This position will begin to define how we reach our users and how we will structure training of online library resources. 4. Space and Facilities Work Done During the Year: During FY98, a total of 18 shelving units were added to the Chemistry Library, totalling 270 linear feet of shelving space. In order to accommodate the shelves, all six "informal" seats were removed, along with a large coffee table and two carrels and chairs. Every volume in the library was shifted, some between floors, to move into the added shelving. The Chemistry Library is now extremely crowded. We are anticipating new space on both floors; Phase I of library remodeling calls for minimal space preparation on the second floor (former Suslick Lab) and moving into that space by January Phase II of library remodeling will be at least two years in the future, awaiting space planning, funding, and the vacancy of allocated space in Noyes Laboratory.
