7 Rules for Students 2 General Laboratory Safety Rules Students are never to work in any laboratory area without instructional supervision. Students must follow all instructions from instructional and laboratory staff. General Rules Food and/or Drink o No food or drink is allowed in any laboratories o B042 is excepted from this rule when it is not being used as a laboratory space o After working in the laboratories, ALWAYS wash your hands before eating or drinking Pre-empting Potential Safety Hazards o Before starting any laboratory activity, assess the safety needs of the activity: What are potential safety hazards? Is there any personal protective equipment (gloves, goggle, mask, etc.) required? o This does not need to be a long process but needs to be sufficient to make preparatory decisions to ensure safety Never work with dangerous materials or processes in the laboratory spaces alone Hazardous Materials or Chemicals (HM/C) Special Rules Introduction of New HM/C o New HM/C require an overall safety assessment o New HM/C require a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) check o New HM/C must be cleared through the Introductory Physics Labs Manager or an Introductory Physics Labs Scientific Instructional Technician Storage of HM/C o Only the minimum necessary amounts of HM/C for active use in the labs will be stored in the classrooms (i.e.: not in B140) Classroom stores of HM/C will be in a locked cabinet Access to HM/C outside of normal lab use will be restricted to lab staff, except in cases where a need is justified o Amounts of HM/C beyond the minimum amounts necessary for active use in the labs will be stored in B140 2 General Laboratory Safety Rules Pg. 15 6 Special Labeling Instructions Chemical containers should always be clearly labeled with their contents. Labels meant for long term use should be made using the label maker in the front office. Always label not only the name of the solution but the chemical contents (ie. Eluting Solution is insufficient, label with % hydrochloric acid and % sodium chloride). Always affix appropriate warning labels such as hazardous and flammable. See Introductory Labs Manager or Scientific Instructional Technician for special hazard labels. Lead waste and other hazardous waste must always use an EH&S official hazardous waste label that clearly states the type of hazardous waste in the container. Never mix different types of hazardous waste in the same container. 6 Special Labeling Instructions Pg. LSI.6.1
