3 Course Structure (1) Module 1: Framework Europe General Basic Information on EU policies, with special respect to the context of chemistry and chemical industry (Lisbon strategy, Bologna declaration etc.) and on trends in the European development of an educational space Module 2: Chemistry changes everything Scope and impact of the European Chemical Industry, its workers and employees and of chemistry based products on the European economy, on citizens everyday life, on the environment and on the labour market 3

4 Course Structure (2) Module 3: Commerce and innovation our future Current and future development trends in the field of commercial application of chemical innovation, with particular regard to the European area (covering fields such as nano-technology, bio-technology, bio-analysis, sustainability of material and energy use, Green Chemistry, chemical engineering design etc.) Module 4: Chemistry bringing it alive Modern, practically oriented, appealing methodologies of teaching chemistry to a broad spectrum of pupils from different abilities and interests, including those who are heading for a career in chemistry a n d those who will just be users of applications of chemistry and voters in elections (societal aspects) 4

5 Course Structure (3) Module 5: Europe the education and training arena Different approaches to vocational and tertiary chemical education in Europe, with special attention to student work experience and to student mobility, taking into account the question of employability of the graduates in a global economy 5

7 Message ECEG in kick-off meeting and question Catherine Beudon need of new employees, improving the image of the chemical industry, Module 2 is important chemical industry is (in young people s minds) not related with cosmetics, pharmacology etc career in e.g. L Oreal is not linked with chemical education (by pupils); pupils do not know possible career pathways after finishing chemistry as a study subject 7

8 Module 2 Chemistry changes everything Critical Comments In bite size packages, pre-prepared in a format allowing presentation through a large screen this would be a useful dripfeed about the importance of chemistry within a European context Would need to be specifically tailored to provide exciting educational resources to motivate students The interdependence of chemistry and everyday life, environment and industry should be shown in concrete examples, which are transparent for the pupils 8

9 Module 3: Commerce and innovation our future Critical Comments sounds good, particularly for A level, but would be best if linked into learning some chemistry and had specific resources to use in lessons short, snappy examples of developments would be very useful It is an important subject, but also a complex one, so that it isn t easy to teach in school, the manner to deal with these applications of innovations should not only consist of advertisement but also allow a critical perspective 9

10 Format suggestions Web-based info, CD s or MP3, ppt- and word/ files Appealing front page(s) leading to deeper layers Browsing spaces with clear structure that easily guides and has multiple entries and exits - such as (see next Downloads of ppt presentations, films, videos etc.; use of existing material! Links to relevant further sources Examples for research tasks that can be given to students 10

Products and Services: selected examples, with e.g. generation tree of the value chain going back from product to its components to their raw materials Benefits that products and services bring about (Procter and Gamble: We do not sell products, we sell benefits diapers = night sleep) Summing up: geographic location map of production sites, product map in the form of fields of everyday-use continents, benefit map 11
