3 3 1.How handle hazardous and chemical waste 1.1 In the lab. Use suitable bottles or containers ex. Empty alcohol bottles for liquids. Mark the bottle or container with WASTE. Label with suitable label (see page 7-8) and write the chemical that supposed to be collected. Make sure the old label is either clearly over crossed or removed. If the substance is toxic, a pictogram label on the waste bottle/container for toxic agents, shall also be used. 1.2 Preparing for the waste room New containers and cardboard boxes for waste are stored in the waste room. All packing containing chemical and hazardous waste is to be sealed properly. White labels are in paper holders on the wall above the table in the trash room AVFALLSRUM (room no: 0416B) on K floor. Fill in all the data on the white label. See instructions on the following pages, under the headline: How to fill in the label. Apply the white label to the packing, containing chemical or hazardous waste. Send a mail to rita.grander@neuro.gu.se and give following information: Kind of waste, amount of bottles, cardboard boxes, name, unit and date. Bring the waste to floor K, to the storage room for chemical, hazardous and biological waste. The door is labeled AVFALLSRUM. The trash facility is divided in three rooms, 0416B, 0416C and 0416D. The white cabinets in the right room (0416D) are marked where to put the different chemicals. The door in to room 0416D is labeled chemical waste, with a yellow sign. Put the chemical waste on correct shelf. The shelves inside the cabinets are also marked were to put different waste. The left room (0416C) is for Hazardous waste, used vials from scintillations. The door in to room 0416C is labeled Hazardous waste, with a yellow sign. Please keep the three areas clean and tidy!! If there are any questions, please contact: Rita Grandér Tel: rita.grander@neuro.gu.se

4 2. What is included in chemical waste and Hazardous waste Chemical waste All inorganic, organic chemicals and solutions. 2.2 Hazardous waste riskavfall Biological waste Hazardous sharps (needles, scalpels, broken glass from the lab. And contaminated gloves) Hazardous sharps and contagious waste. Pharmaceuticals Infectious items Genetically modified micro-organism waste (not Infectious ) Genetically modified micro-organism waste (Infectious ) Radioactive chemicals or items 2.3 How to do the packaging Chemical waste For solutions: Use a durable container. Smaller volumes of chemical waste can be put together in a carbon box or other approved packing. Mark the packing with the white label for chemical waste. For solid waste: Pipette tips, plastic tubes and other equipment that have been contaminated with hazardous chemicals shall be handled as the solutions. One single small container with chemical disposal Put the container in a brown paper bag. The bags are available in two sizes and be find on the table in room 0416B. Label the bag and put it at the specific in one of the cupboards.

5 Packaging to be use for chemical waste Use either the yellow big plastic container fig (1) or the card board box. Important: For chemical waste use the box marked with Farligt avfall (chemical waste) in black letters. See fig. (2). Follow the instructions on the box how to fold it (3). Place a black plastic bag inside and label the box with the Faligt avfall label (4). Write on the label the chemical that supposed to be collected. Fig.1 Two sizes of yellow containers Fig. 4 Insert a black plastic bag and label the box. Fig. 2 card board box for chemical waste Fig. 3 Instructions how to make a box

6 6 2.4 Hazardous waste riskavfall Packaging to be use for Hazardous waste Use either the yellow big plastic container fig. (4) or the brown card board box marked Riskavfall on the yellow boarder fig. (5) For smaller parts as needles and scalpel blades, use the small yellow plastic containers with red lid fig. (6). The boxes should have a plastic bag inside fig. (7). Boxes should not be filled up to more than 75% to be able to seal them properly.
